Amusingly, an Unspeakable Futures game at PaizoCon 2 is where I first met Brandon Hodge. He was playing an android gunslinger (and bore an uncanny resemblance to Yul Brynner in Westworld, I must say) and I had I believe a troglodyte scavenger with a big hammer, a shotgun... and a TOW TRUCK! We blew up a bunch of bad guys and generally had a great time.

We also played a few sessions of it later on. My first character was a mercenary that died early. Close encounter of the chainsaw kind... :)

On a scale of 1 to 1000000,

1) chance of this happening before the end of the decade?

2) chances of this happening during next decade?

Depends on if 1 = definitely or 10000000 does.

1= unlikely, 10000000= very likely.

I'd then say it's probably close to 9,992,022.

If I recall correctly... you got a sneak attack on a thug with that shotgun, too! Mayhem.

What's really funny is that I was clearing out a bookshelf yesterday to unearth a buried printer and what should fall out on the floor from a stack of old papers but my character sheets from Unspeakable Futures! :)

The late, lamented mercenary Gorilla Monsoon (he of the chainsaw-related fatality) and his replacement "Apolo Anton OH NO!!!" - a half-ghoul rogue. Good times!

No... Unspeakable Futures wouldn't fit into Golarion at all. It's an entirely different genre, with entirely different themes. There's certainly a fair amount of crossover in those themes, but just as I'd rather not see Mad Max roll into King's Landing and challenge Jamie Lannister to a race, I'd rather not merge Unspeakable Futures with Golarion.

To be honest, that sounds just like Iron Gods... especially with an entire book called "Technology Guide" coming out (a book that is specific to Golarion) and it's particularly wahoo level of tech included (at least, according to the current product description).

Not sure how accurate your statement is (or rather, 'will become')... :D

Unspeakable Futures includes a lot of real-world stuff in there, like religion and nations and stuff like that. It's also a lot more "R-Rated" than what we publish for Golarion. Furthermore, the strength of it as a post apocalyptic setting, as with ANY such setting, is that it's our own world that's had the apocalypse. It's more visceral to, for example, have an adventure set in the shadow of the ruins of the Golden Gate Bridge than it is to do the same in the ruins of some big bridge on Golarion.

Unspeakable Futures is, in other words, MUCH more than rules for science fiction items.

In fact, the bulk of the contents of the "Technology Guide" were designed by me, and were first used and playtested (extensively) in Unspeakable Futures.

james please publish this ill defenetly buy it!, i wish paizo published more mature tones than the current status quo honestly, ive been searching for fantasy lovecraftian horror but havent found it alot in golarion :/

Any progress on putting out this game?

I am definitely interested. The biggest problem with this sort of thing is having firearms in the mix. If you make the rules regarding firearms in combat anywhere close to realistic then combat becomes incredibly deadly. Especially in a setting with no medevac choppers on standby to fly the wounded to a trauma center.

Therefore one is left with the options of nerfing firearms as well as having character class(es) with healing abilities that rival/surpass those of a trained emergency room medical team in a trauma center. Then you run into the problem that some scenarios become unplayable without one or two dedicated healbots coupled with a lot of people not wanting to play a healbot.

So, I am interested and want to know more about the system.

I think you can use a standard HP like system but it just needs to be made clear that called shots are not a thing. Ie, yes, you rolled and it hit but it was far more likely to be a graze, or an in-and-out, or superficial, etc. At the same time, I think that deadly is probably a good thing for this type of game.

Looks like you can indeed necro it!

No news. I guess I'm kinda holding it in reserve for something to work on in a future where I'm no longer employed at Paizo, or at a point where I'm shifting all of my freelance writing to "for myself" rather than "for another company."

At this point, none of that has changed... but that said, the way 2nd edition works makes it MUCH better for a game like Unspeakable Futures, which struggled with having more powerful than normal ancestries as options, and how to present spell lists, and how to handle multiple attacks with powerful weapons.

Thanks James! (Mr. Jacobs?) How do you follow posts to respond so fast?

I generally check the boards a few times throughout the day when I need a break from whatever else I'm working on at the time, and as part of checking those boards I check the one where my "Ask James" thread lives. And so I just happened to check that forum at a point not long after this one popped up at the top of the list. (It helps that I don't do twitter or instagram or much other social media stuff at all, so that time I might take checking those things instead ends up being spent on the Paizo forums, I guess.)
