DMs, present your players

Gamer Life General Discussion

Simple enough, how about a topic in which DMs present their players to others? You don't have to go with levels and all of the details, just tell with what kind of party you're dealing with. I'll start:

My players:
1) a female elven bard, with an archetype based on dancing.
2) a male squole (Alluria Publishing) binder (conversion I've found here)
3) a male elven alchemist... who probably discovered the most deadly combinations ever with spells, bombs and discoveries.
4) a male canine animus (Alluria Publishing) sorcerer, with an archetype based on the Battle Sorcerer.
5) a male obitu (Alluria Publishing) cleric/wizard/dread necromancer, with a Pathfinder adapted version from the Libris Mortis.
6) a male obitu (Alluria Publishing) sorcerer/dragon disciple.

I stated mine, what about yours?

A human gunslinger on the run from agents of the alkenstar gunworks, a half elf druid truffle salesman who likes his boar more than most people, a samsaran oracle, a human tattooed air sorcerer, and a goblin rouge/fighter aiming for shadowdancer (which is fun, since this is RotRL...)

Fiongall, a human paladin of the Order of the Chalice (homebrew) from Brevoy;
Hydeas, an elf alchemist with a HUGE love for bombs;
Skarkin, a human fighter who was once in a party with Lamia Milawi who betrayed him and later joind a group called "The Marrow Reavers" (Rival Guide)
Schomo, a gnome sorcerer who still doesn't know what to do as the 'Lord Magister of Goldmark' in our Kingmaker Campaign; and
Broll, a dwarf monk from the northern shores of Brevoy who is now in control of the gold and silver mines. And he knows what to do...

Gareon - CG m half-elf urban ranger (skirmisher) (with a dip in rogue (acrobat)).
Leaps before he looks, more often than not getting into things well over his head.

Lulu - NG f changeling summoner, and Mukuru, her feline Eidolon.
Quiet, introverted girl; creeping out most people around her by her mere presence.

Moonhair - CN f shoanti barbarian (Elemental Kin) (going to dip into Oracle, heading for Rage Prophet).
Barbarienne with a fiery temper. Does not back away from any challenge.

Rosilka Goldhammer - NG f dwarven cleric of Sarenrae. Yes, a scimitar-wielding dwarf.
No-nonsense matronly figure, always eager to give advice (regardless whether it's needed, or even welcome).

Silea - CN f half-elf hedge witch with healing patron.
Embittered, spiteful woman with a pretty low regard for humanity who, however, has accepted Lulu as something akin to a foster daughter.

Viorec - CG m varisian bard (arcane duelist) (heading for Dragon Disciple).
Somewhat self-aggrandizing womanizer (then again, is there a bard who isn't?) Group's tactician, doing his very best to keep his companions in high spirits.

Homebrew World based off of a European invasion of an undiscovered tribal continent.

Athelstan, human cleric of the sea god Malathar. Athelstan is a cross between Al Sharpton and Gary Busey. He is from Umeria (England)
Cem, a human wizard who got permanently transmuted into a goblin upon arriving in the new world. He is from Salvana (Spain/Italy/Greece)
Olmec, a human sorcerer from the tribe which translates to "people of the stone."
Rivven, a ratfolk barbarian from a Zen Buddhist culture led by a council of master splinters.

Dark Archive RPG Superstar 2013 Top 32

The Eberron campaign I just finished running last month, using the Pathfinder ruleset:

Harper d'Lyrandar - female half-elf rogue, specializing in acquisitions and artifact recovery on behalf of the House.
Quira Maverick - female half-elf gunslinger/spellslinger. Essentially a gun mage.
Dyshir - male gnome summoner with the most ridiculously beefy eidolon I have ever seen.
Oreck - male half-orc alchemist, specializing in bombs, bombs, and more bombs.
Terros Nightsguard - male human paladin/holy vindicator of the Silver Flame, smiter of bad things and generally conflicted by his faith vs. his conscience.

This is in my homebrew game:

Tynan Nerosteel - LN Half-Elf Kensai Magus Prince, who's going around the world treating with other nations to rally against a great evil.

Ryuji Honjo - CG Sylph Sword Saint Samurai, the adopted brother of the current Emperor of his home nation, he left with Tynan as part of his treaty with his brother.

Ambrosia Di Orfeo - NN Dhampir Wizard, court wizard & ambassador to a great militaristic nation. He left with Tynan’s group when events lead him to be exiled.

Rochefort Fils Du Requin – A NN Human Rouge/Fighter. A pirate who rallied alongside Tynan’s group when he made port and came under attack by a separate group of pirates.

Tanya Len – A NG Human Cleric of Pharasma, Was originally a patron of Tynan’s court. Left with him on his noble quest.

Jamdak Zanfalcon – A LN Tengu Monk of the 4 Winds, whose monastic order followed Ryuji’s Brother. Decided to leave order to travel with Tynan.

Salad – LG Gnome Paladin of Shelyn, Traveled to a land besieged by undead to protect as many lives as she can & to save the gem of the nation before meeting up with Tynan.

Owjha - CG Gnome Cleric of an unkown sex, who is secretly familly of a famous bard. Scared of being exposed and of Big birds.
Elle - CG Human female Fighter, 1.50, no hair, carrys around two war hammers. Scared of horses and water.
Hasheed - LN Gnome monk, male, talks like Yoda, scared of clowns.
Dapper - CN Male Sorcerer, drunk lady's man, scared of snakes, somehow always gets his way.

Dark Archive

For the Rise of the Runelords game I intend to start running over Winter break:

Tosid - Male LN Dwarven Urgosh-wielding Fighter. Dwarven to his bones, just wants to drink and fight.
Adrana - Female TN Tiefling Witch. Player is still working out her personality.
Hakvor - Male NG Half-orc Cleric of Sarenrae. Friendly but with a short temper, Hakvor is a devoted follower of the Dawnflower.
Draynor - Male CG Human Ranger. Player is going to go full Aragorn, or at least try to.
Kristopher - Male CG Human Sorcerer (Celestial Bloodline). Player is still working out his personality.
Tristan - Male TN Human Bard. Rather spoony, mostly interested in himself and women, though I hope the rest of the party to break him of that!
Taniir - Male CG Elf Rogue. Has potential to be quite dickass thief-y, gonna have to keep an eye on him.

I think we're gonna have a lot of fun, even though this is my first time trying to run an AP.

I have two Parties

The first is running through kingmaker:
1. a Sytheist summoner that is based on a little girl possessed by a Deamon that acts as the Kingdoms executioner.

2. A Half orc ranger who claimed the Lizard king's Harem and is currently dealing with figuring out how to raise a very odd set of children (5% chance he could impregnate the lizardfolk and he rolled it.

3. A Now Gnollish Archer fighter who after sneaking up on the Big Bad Owl Bear of Book three decided to put on the golden "belt" that the thing had on, I ruled that he would experience the same effects as the owlbear because well that was dumb. He has since cut off his finger to atone for the families he killed and then grew his finger back when reincarnated as a gnoll, is currently trying to figure out what to do with his old finger.

4. A High CHA Ranged rogue who is going to become a Sorc/arcane archer. Has problems with gender identity and reigning in character 1 psychotic tendencies.

5. a Witch and Her Alchemist Husband (Cohort) who are just trying to get along in this mad wilderness Kingdom.

My Second Party is going through Rise of the runelords:

1. A vartisian Monk who happens to work for the Scarnetti in Sandpoint he is beginning to want to take over the Businesses in sandpoint in order to reel in some extra doe.

2. A dwarven Pawnshop owner/ Druid who believes that balance in life can be achieved through proper pricing in the wilds of business.

3. An Asimar sorcerer who is working on his acting career and just wants the town to survive until his acting career can finally kick off.

4. A goblin barbarian who specializes in killing goblins, hired on by the guard and kept in the basement of the Dwarfs pawnshop to scare away thieves. is slowly developing a fear of basement as so far he has found; a naked enraged bugbear, A group full of zombies with a necromancer, a swarm of diseased rats and ghouls.

5. A character who is laughably called a whoresassin part whore part gunslinger who was recently killed in her sleep by the goblin.

For the Serpent's Skull Advanture Path:
1. LN Human Ranger (Guide Archetype), a northern tribesman. Slowly learning the ways of the southern area and jungle. Sasha has taken an interest...

2. CN Gnome Sorcerer (Djinni bloodline). Prankster, teaming up with Gelik to play pranks on the party.

3. NG Spirit of the Waters Elf Alchemist, ships doctor and only surviving crew member. His bombs have decimated most encounters, especially swarms. Concentrates on healing ability and bombs.

4. LG Half Elf Paladin and Cleric (Crusader) of Iomadae, just returning from the Mendev Crusades. She is treated by the NPCs as the party leader.

5. LN Dwarf Monk of the Four Winds. Exceptionally bad luck in rolling.

6. NG Halfling Archaeologist Bard, Beatrix "Beetle" Cobblestout, who specializes in the Mwangi Expanse, traps and the whip (heirloom weapon)

7. CG Halfling Pistolero Gunslinger, worshipper of Mulani and bounty hunter. She was onboard escorting Jask to trial.

7 people marked this as a favorite.

Male middle-aged human IT quality assurance manager who collects movie memorabilia and has three cats.

Male middle-aged human electrician and competitive bass fisherman who's married to a middle school math teacher.

Male human graduate student in high-energy physics and local Ultimate Frisbee champion.

Female middle-aged human marketing manager and semi-professional jazz pianist.

Male human mechanical engineer who drives a souped-up Jetta in autocross competitions.

...Oh... you meant player characters?

Highroost, a Rogue Tengu who is built as a Knife Master [Rogue Archtype]. Most of his clan was killed, leaving 9, including him, of his tribe of 30. Very good player and gets way in character in the best way possible.
Beltin, an Alchemist Aasimar who used to own a small business in Absalom. Just kinda sits there and does his best to have fun.
Threy, a Fighter turned Barbarian Sulis. His grandfather was a Copper (Or Brass, I can't remember) dragon who was a very well known and respected political figure of Absalom. The rule-guy of our group, also able to fly of the handle at the drop of a hat.

Aidyn Brill, an unstable half-elf pyromaniac rogue. Raised by goblins, she reverts to the goblin tongue when upset. Hates elves. CN

Avaellus, a rather spiteful elf fighter (tactician) and beginning air wizard. Often acts as a leader, but tends to comes up with mediocre--or even dreadful--plans. LG.

Aranel, an elf druid. Hardly ever speaks. Doesn't like fire. Often threatens to shoot Aidyn. N

Room, a half-orc cleric. Has a very dark past of murder and worse. Now tries to seem happy-go-lucky, and likes to use a Rod of Wonder-style device he recently obtained to complicate fights. Recently cut off own arm to help out an NPC. Good friends with Aranel. N

Everas, an apathetic half-elf ranger. Doesn't get involved in inter-party conflicts much (though he doesn't know yet that Avaellus killed his beloved mule). Has a panther named Guen. The most dangerous in a melee of the lot. N? (stupid player keeps putting off giving me the alignment, or backstory, or anything...gripegripegripe

Evin, a half-elf alchemist. Tends to be the voice of reason, but isn't quite normal himself. Looks extremely sketchy. Friends with Aidyn. N

I have two players, since we're all night shifters. But here's what they have as a party.

Player 1:
1)A gnomish Summoner(Synth)/Druid/Mystic Theurge(I had to houserule the heck out of it to remotely make this work for him). He is obsessed with pancakes. To the point where he's now crafting Pancake Golems to help defend the city they're trying to protect.
2)A Sylph Grenadier Alchemist. She's a bit of a stalker(she likes people watching) who joined the party to keep closer tabs on the person she's stalking(the gnome above). Mechanically, she's his cohort.
3)An Alchemical Golem who the gnome has named Stanley. He was recently injected with "Protomatter"(because I've been watching too much ST: Voyager lately) which upgraded him a bit.

Player A:
1)A half-orc Cleric/Paladin/Holy Vindicator/Gunslinger. Yeah, that progression makes me think my player needs ritalin, too. Probably the heaviest RP of the party. He's now taken the title of Scion of Iomedae and wields a holy blade blessed by her. His gun is decorated with mithral filigree made from the shattered remnants of his old blade.
2)An Ifrit Sorcerer/Fighter/Arcane Archer. Once threw a runestone of power 3 at an Evil Eye because he failed to identify it. The cohort of the many-classed half-orc above.
3)An angel who used to live inside the sword the Scion wields but was released by the chaotic touch of a Lovecraftian entity.

Well hey. This sounds more like tell us about your players characters, not tell us about your players...

If we're asking about our players we actually kinda make up the avengers.

Nick always plays the elven archers and the female characters, so he's kinda our Hawkeye/Black widow...

Dave is the paladin, so you know. Captain America types. When he asked what his weakness was I said 'the same thing as every other paladin'... The belief that everyone should believe the same thing you do...

Zach is our incridible hulk... Right now he's an alchemist but he's the most likely to play whatever makes the biggest boom, has fire breath, his summoner's creature will have every attack evolution possible... He's a wrecker through and through. On an interesting note he's also the 'neutral woundwailer' if anyone here remembers 'front end alignments' from dragon magazine...Issue 124 I think? Its an excellent and timeless read. Check it out!

Todd. well. So far he's the loki. He likes to do his own thing which usually gets the party into trouble.

And of course I usually play the chaotic neutral wizards, so i'm the genius in the party with the cash and the fancy toys and the interest mostly in the self... I am ironman.

Oh yes and of course our GM is Thor. Because he wants to PUT THE HAMMER DOWN!

From my current Modified-Second Darkness Game

Kiss, a female Fetchling Acrobat-Archetype Rogue. Highly emotional, grew up on the streets with no knowledge of what her race actually is, wants to actually get somewhere in the world and live comfortably, currently edging pretty hard towards NE territory.
Once collected her own blood-money via her disguise-self ability and some well rolled bluffs.

Tell, Kiss' twin brother, a male Fetchling Dark Tapestry Oracle. Party leader, quietly OCD, determined to discover he and his sister's mystery origins, as well as open an orphanage, ridiculously empathetic, Neutral Reasonable.
Currently has an imp named Scratch-and-Bite-at-Night under contract as his cohort, although not for his soul (yet...).

Scratch, the aforementioned imp, who will be taking rogue levels soon. Has tiny armor and tiny clothing in his future.

Lia Ramsey, a female human Diviner Wizard. Wants to become a famous Cyphermage, has serious issues with her dad and a lot of teen angst, plus major social anxiety and awkwardness. Solidly neutral.
Changed her name from "Eirlys" to Lia.
Is not allowed to try to interrogate prisoners after spending five minutes calling the last one "ugly" and "stupid" in various ways with her dad adn getting absolutely nowhere.

Rhydderch Ramsey, male human Fighter/Chevalier. Came home after years working to take care of his daughter after his wife died, doesn't quite get why his daughter gets mad at him for insulting cyphermages for being snooty (okay they are, but still). Lawful Good that thinks he's Chaotic. Doesn't know how to people.
Has the most ridiculously hard to understand accent. Somehow manages to communicate with an NPC who has a poor grasp of common, mostly through the common bonds of HONOR.

All in all a ridiculously fun group.
Now if only Tell can find a way to keep Rhyd from killing Scratch... Ah well, there's always faking your own death and sitting invisible on your employers shoulder!

Sovereign Court

Nyterbeck - A 7th level human Cleric of Fenra. Original born of the Wyld lands his family was killed when he was very young and he was kept alive by a she-wolf. The she-wolf took him to Paladins and Clerics of Fenra and he was raised in the church. He has a good heart but can be grouchy and is not partial to elves.

Tarl A 4th level Ranger/2nd Barbarian human from the Wyld Lands to the north. he has a hatred for elves and has proven himself a capable and trust worthy member Also a follower of Fenra the Wolf Goddess of protection

Arist A 6th level human wizard from the eastern Empire of Parkonia, a country much like Rome in full decline. On the run from his past and a veteran of the Blood Raven War with the WyldLanders. he now seeks knowledge and his family. Smitten by a young woman that he has rescued withthe rest of the party

Leander A 6th Level Human Paladin of the Broken Urn. An order dedicated to the protection of Beauty and finding beauty in every thing that is. Smitten by the same young woman Arist is.

Edvard A 5th level Human fighter. Burned years ago by an attacking dragon, he now fears fire to the point of cowering even in a battle from it. He does not believe in gods but is quickly learning that the gods believe in him.

Edwena A 5th level Human rouge. Seeking to learn new languages and to decipher them while gaining the treasures from lost tombs. She cannot stand men telling her what to do. While not one to follow the gods, she knows they are there and have their purpose and use.

Elegy Medvyed: LN Female Human Spellscar Oracle with Legalistic curse. May be multiclassing into Rogue for a couple of Talents shortly... if the allure of crafting magical items doesn't dissuade her. Diplomancer extraordinaire, yet horribly inadequate at dealing with other people on an actual personal level. Noble scion with a lot to prove, as she's on her family's last nerve. Owes a debt to Queen Mab of the Winter Fey, and her Oracle powers were given by Mab to allow her to complete that debt without flailing uselessly as a level-1 Aristocrat. Duchess of Iomrall, their colony in my Kingmaker game.

Jaekah: TN Male Centaur True Primitive Barbarian/Order of the Seal Cavalier, recently reincarnated as a Juvenile Magma Dragon, making him the first (and thus far only) member of the group to die. Utterly loyal to Elegy, has a major crush on her that she's oblivious to (and probably won't reciprocate, she considers him a friend - perhaps her only friend - but nothing more than that), and holds a friendly rivalry with Errol. Utterly oblivious about magic and most of civilized culture. General of Iomrall.

Errol Genio: CE Male Half-Elf Bladebound Magus. Seeker of ancient lore, hidden secrets, and incredible power. Heir to the awesomeness that is elvendom. Hater of humans despite his half-blood status (which he would gladly love to revoke, if he can find a way). Wielder of the blade Red Right Hand, crafted of crystal mined from the mountains around Queen Titania's castle. Currently suffering from a bad case of amnesia the party suspects was the payment for his sword. Magister of Iomrall.

Lilith Blackheart: CN Female Dhampir Rogue, for now; she might be rebuilding to slip in some Psion, last we talked. Dweller of the wilds, friend of the Wyldfae, follower of the moon goddess. Acts as the closest thing to the group's conscience, and only joined to make sure the group didn't abuse the wilds they were colonizing, despite her disdain for civilization. Fears fire greatly. Has a network of spies including some of the Little Folk fey, an ex-bandit, and the party's Arachne (Drider) Diplomat. Spymistress of Iomrall.

Takeshi: TN Male Human Ronin Samurai. Lover of warfare and battle, frequently refers to foes who won't fight him (either fleeing or going around him to get to the squishy casters) as cowards. Stoic and quiet, though mostly due to OOC interruptions from his and Lilith's player's baby. An orphan raised by monks in an island kingdom across the sea, he has told the party very little of himself and is still kind of an enigma. Marshall of Iomrall.

From my previous campaign, we'll be starting Carrion Crown in a few days.

Argon: hack-n-slash fighter/barbarian who enjoys fighting, loot, fighting, breaking stuff, fighting, killing things, fighting, etc. Often makes bizarre decisions and thinks in improbable ways.

Legolas: casual gamer who plays odd combinations of classes and feats. His catch-phrase is "can we keep it?", a line that has been applied to everything from a hobgoblin to a Cthulian horror.

Anom: cannot think of a name for his character, so always calls himself Anom, which is derived from anonymous. Always plays halfling archers, and routinely deals buckets of damage. He's very violent and enjoys slaughtering everything in his path.

Ivrinn/The Doctor: The most role-playing inclined player of the party, who enjoys being the "know it all." Loves Dr. Who, and plays a character based on the good Doctor. He is also partly the party leader, and has played more D&D than the rest, so they look to him for rules knowledge.

Nano: A talkative dwarf cleric who goes along with whatever the rest of the party does. Played a lot of GM vs. Players in the past, so becomes extremely paranoid when he suspects traps.

Balder: Human barbarian/druid who likes to chop things apart with an axe, and almost never casts druid spells, but resolutely continues to multiclass.

We had another member who left, and we're trying to convince another guy to join atm. Needless to say, I run a very hack-n-slash campaign. Dungeon crawling is our bread and butter, just like it was way back in AD&D.

This reminds me of the pacifist bard from my Savage Tide game. His included a rust monster, a few dogs, a ship, an idol, and a hydra.

From the Campaign I am currently running. The Campaign itself is a DND 3.5 one taking place in a world of my own creation.

Deadrix: Paladin of Bahumat, intent one one day being blessed with the gift of Dragonhood.

Fuce: Gnomic Bard, who's in stern belief that his Dagger is a true sword, and is quick to remind those who say otherwise the blade is just as deadly.

Carad: A Halfling Ranger who enjoys being good at what he does. Too much, one may say.

Isuna: A Rogue who follows a more Rightious path. A close friend of the Paladin, as he seeks the same virtues. The oddest one of the group.

Nameless(That IS his name): A Dwarven Monk who enjoys two things: A job well done, and toppling powers that do not deserve their seat of power.

In the homebrew campaign I'm running which is almost finished, "Tomb of Khazek":

Kaniji: female Gnome from Avistan, she's a rogue who poses as a bard and earns decent coin at the tavern. She has a shortbow of speed and a pet onyx dog she calls Shadow.

Migalito de Sato: a Human Taldoran fighter who left his noble family when they asked him to do something evil. During the course of the game Migalito slew his brother Pepe in a duel to the death. Died once to an Orc chieftan.

Zalie: a female Half-elf sorcerer/ranger who was estranged from her family for committing too much arson. Zalie communed with a sentient oak to receive a special weapon to help defeat a white dragon. Died once due to Stannis' friendly fire(ball).

Frennis Kibann: a male Human cleric of Sarenrae who is currently overseeing the building of a temple to Sarenrae, discovered he may be harboring agents of the Cult of the Dawnflower. Frennis has a lustrous beard due to a cursed Belt of Dwarvenkind.

Stannis Kibann: a male Human enchanter wizard and brother to Frennis. A suspect in the death of his former master, Stannis fled to remote reaches. An odd behavior for a wizard, Stannis often mixes it up in melee combat.

My players' characters in our current Pathfinder campaign:

-Pietro Pontevedra: Half-Orc Fighter with a characteristically blond hair and well-polished tusks. Son of a travelling orc blacksmith and a female noble who fought in the Fourth Crusade disguised as a man, he took upon his mother's last name in order to blend a bit more easily into human society. His life mission involves finishing Midnight, the sword his father had been tasked to forge by the brutal mercenary captain Ferenc the Bold from a piece of a fallen star, the same that cost him his life when he failed to finish in time. Once complete, Pietro hopes to drive it right through Ferenc's heart.

-Antonella Baglietto: Human Gunslinger and mechanical expert in general. Born in a wealthy family without a mother, Antonella left home at the tender age of 16 following on the footsteps of Bonifazio della Vincera, one of the greatest mechanologists of the time, only to end up lost in the far eastern corners of the Empire.

-Elric Aionfeld: Human Paladin with a short temper and an addiction to nicotine. A member of the Domus Venatore, the arm of the Church in charge of hunting down things not meant to be, Elric's poor social skills and tendency to snap ended with him assigned to the remotes corners of the Empire, where his time is mostly spent chasing crop-stealing orcs.

-Varthur von Wyvern: Human Cavallier and local knight in shining armour. Comming from a long line of dragon riders, Varthur narrowly escaped the family feud that almost wiped out his bloodline, rescued precisely by a member of the opposing house. With the Empire having massacred every single dragon known to man in recent years, his life mission is two-fold: To once again recover the tradition of dragon riding by securing an egg from the impenetrable Mountains of Woe, and then bringing the murderers of his family to justice, with or without imperial acknowledgment.

-Searos Featherfire: Human Sorcerer and pyromancer extraordinaire. The seventh son of a seventh son, Searos had a troubled life since conception. Though loved by his parents, a mob of scared peasants attempted to throw him into a well upon birth, fearing he might become a witch. So with the help of a travelling friar, his father managed to hide him in a monastery, where the monks taught him a life of prayer, self-control and introspection. He also developed an astounding capacity to brew beer, which made him popular among the monks and visitors. Forced to escape when the monastery was assaulted by marauding orcs, he discovered right there that, despite everything, perhaps he was meant to become a witch. The burning crisp of the orc who attempted to kill good Friar Ottoms certainly gave that impression.

-Cedric Fontainebleau: Human Synthesist Summoner and madman in the making. After almost murdering his magical sparring partner by accident during a trial at the Ecclesiastic Academy for the Magical Arts in Rodeleaux, his master was put under investigation and just so happened to have been practicing magic under a forged licence, prompting the local Bishop to issue an arrest order. Not knowing this and fearing that the approaching ecclesiastic guards were after him, Cedric fought back and killed the Bishop's messenger by none other than manifesting a tentacled eidolon around his body. Forced to escape the region after that, Cedric has been trying to live with his increasingly more uncomfortable capacity ever since, trying to remain one step ahead of Cardinal Valois and his tireless agents.
