Word Casting and Spell Mastery

Rules Questions

Silver Crusade

As a wizard I love learning spell mastery to master spells without using my spellbook. Now I am intrigued in learning how to use word casting. My question is can I apply spell mastery to word casting. In other words, can I master a number of target and effect spells equal to my intelligence modifier. I would love the idea that my wizard can cast word spells with out the spellbook as well and it would be monster awesome if he could master both regular spells and word caster spells. Any help would be appreciated. :)

That concept seems a bit too powerful for Word Casting to me.

Ultimate Magic gives a completely different description for "Meta Word Mastery" than how Spell Mastery works, and while it does describe how some other Feats interact with Wordcasting, it doesn't mention Mastery.

I'm sure it could be worked somehow, but with just a couple uses of the Mastery Feat, one could almost completely obviate the need for a spellbook, which isn't the case with normal spellcasting.

The idea that taking the Spell Mastery feat could be considered "too powerful" completely blows my mind. In all of my years of playing, I've never seen anyone use (dare I say "waste"?) a feat on Spell Mastery.

My two cents: The rules don't allow Spell Mastery to be used on Words, but it seems like a reasonable analogy to me.

True, but what I was thinking, was that my wizard would take the Experimental Word Caster Feat at least twice. Then at the spell mastery feat take on a number of effect and meta words equal to my intelligence modifier. I think that this will balance the game since it is only my wife and I playing.

Point taken. I don't think that Spell Mastery is too powerful. I love the idea that the wizard doesn't have to rely on his spellbook. But I can see that with the spell mastery used differently and the wizard word caster wouldn't need a spellbook. All the wizard would have to rely on is his words of power memorized.

I think you're overestimating how versatile effect words are. Knowing a few effect words, meta words and target words doesn't obviate the need for a spellbook any more than knowing a few normal wizard spells plus Heighten Spell, Empower Spell, and Widen Spell would, in my experience.
