reconsideration request: thassilonian specialist

I just realized that the Thassilonian Specialist archetype is not approved for PFS play, and I'm hoping someone has a minute to revisit that decision. It doesn't seem overpowered--one extra spell slot, which has to be a duplicate, in return for not being able to choose your opposition schools--and I suspect it was left out at least in part because it wasn't in the same section of Inner Sea Magic as the other archetypes (it's on page 17; they're 32-43).

Anyway. I know you're busy, guys, but if you have a moment. :)

I haven't seen the bosses of PFS changing what's banned too often, though I'm not part of PFS either.

But either way, good luck getting some more liberties to it all. Thassilonian Specialists are good for RP flavor.

Not only you don't get to pick your opposition schools, but you cant even prepare them, they become prohibited schools.

To be honest, my guess is that it was not just a power decision, but a flavor one as well (live vivisectionist, gravewalker witch, etc...) given that they dabble in Thassalonian sin magic, which are mostly used by the Runelords. They are the quintessential villains of Golarion, so I can see why they are banned.

Nevertheless, I really wanted to play one when I started my wizard, but I'm actually happy with the one I made. (conjurer wizard/bloatmage)

If you have a Wizard studying the Cyphergate in Riddleport, it'd be very likely he'd be a Thassilonian Specialist.

Nothing evil about that in and of itself. Now I'm curious if the Cyphermage prestige class from Inner Sea Magic is banned, too.

5/5

I got to put these guys in Race for the Runecarved Key. Fun stuff. +1 for allowing this class for PCs.

Cyphermage PrC from Inner Sea Magic is included in Additional Resources. It was recently clarified that they were OK.

In that case, the Thassilonian Specialist should be okay as well.

Maybe it's on the 'put in a chronical sheet' list?

This would be pretty dang sweet as well. Ties in pretty neatly into season 4 hmmmmmm?

I basically play one now. I loved the flavor, so built my my Transmuter (Greed Mage) as soon as I read the write up. Vaclav has voluntarily not learned any opposition spells (illusion and enchantment). I simply haven't received the extra conjuration spell per level.

I did also had to remove Lissala as his deity when it was clarified that she is not a valid deity for PFS.

As I understand it, the Thassilonian specialist is not somebody who loves studying Thassilonian lore — that would be a Ciphermage; rather, it is a spellcaster who embraces Sin magic, often willingly accepting or willfully ignoring the repercussions of corrupting the Virtues of Rule.

I play Eldarius of Thassilon as well , evoker type, somehow released from stasis under the Old Light in 4208AR. He also worships Lissala.

Will where did you see Lissala was banned from being worshipped?

I know deriving powers (spellcasting, etc) was never approved.

Seems to apply to all characters, not just divine ones. So instead of worshiping Lissala, you're going to have to merely revere her and just say you're worshiping her.

The Exchange 3/5

Thassilonians are *way* strong.

Dark Archive 2/5

Were they always restricted from play? I remember looking up them specifically before Gen Con to make a wizard. Were they removed from play recently?

EDIT: Sometimes I forget what is listed is legal, and what is not list is illegal. But that gets reversed for the big books like APG, UM, UC, etc. I guess I'll just be a normal illusionist then.

Grand Lodge 5/5

Another +1 from me for making it legal.

4/5

I would love this becoming legal. I miss prohibited schools.

Scarab Sages 5/5

I, like Will Johnson, loved the flavor of the Thassilonian Specialist I made a transmuter with the prohibited scholls without getting to exta spell per day.

I would love to for this archetype to be reconsidered or even opened up as a boon at the end of a scenario.

Has this been revisited?

There is a chronicle that unlocks the option for all of your characters.

You actually can open this archetype up by completing a particular scenario (it appears on the chronicle sheet.)

EDIT: Ninja'ed by Zefig!

Sczarni 5/5 5/55/5 ***

It's even available for Core, assuming you play that scenario in Core.

I'm actually waiting to create a Core Wizard until after I've gone through it.

Shadow Lodge 4/5

It's quite an undertaking though being tier 7-11 scenario.

Indeed, A group of us locally decided to start a party of Core Thassilonian Specialist wizards for a season 5-6 campaign after we played through all of season 4, a few hand-picked filler scenarios, and Eyes last year. It's been a lot of fun so far!

It is still not on the approved additional resources list, so you can't just make one. But I'm fairly sure that there was a chronicle boon that would allow you to make new character who was a thassilonian specialist or start taking levels in it.

Last reading of this I saw was that it only unlocks the archtype for one character. I don't know where the answer is, but there may be some confusion on this point.

When building a new character for Pathfinder Society Organized Play, you may make use of the Thassilonian magic rules on page 17 of Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Magic. As with other rules outside the core assumption, you must provide a legal copy of the book to use this option.

Are you building a new character? If yes, then you can use the boon. It isn't limited to one character.

I read it the same way as Michael, but I could definitely see iy being read the other way. That said, I'm not sure how often it to would come up. *shrug*

Yeah, I think the confusion can come in with the fact that boons that grant these kinds of options are usually one-shots, but this doesn't have a "cross it off" rule, or anything to really tack to the new character... you have to haul around the character that went through the scenario (or at least the chronicle sheet) as proof. It's primarily based on previous experience with limited access races, but the boon itself doesn't strictly limit itself in either way.

I'm in favor of reading as you do, but I've heard the latter from a couple folks.

You can use the boon to create as many Thassilonian specialists as you like.

Really looking forward to this myself... although I might be looking forward to running the relevant scenarios even more. ^_^

I've GMed some of them, and had the whole series run at my store. They're great fun and very challenging. My only concern is that (because of the boons involved) competition for seats can be fierce.

Hmm

Could someone PM me the scenario that opens the Sin schools? I'm taken by the fluff surrounding this archetype and wouldn't mind DMing the scenario at some point.

Totally by coincidence my Thassilonian Necromancer just started a trilogy at this weekend's Con with a Thassilonian Conjurer.

It's been hilarious when the party finds scrolls and wands as we ping-pong back and forth to see who can use what.

Plus, having message up and communicating in Thassilonian.

Silver Crusade 2/5

Just for clarification, if you have the [redacted] boon on a non-core character you cannot make a core thassilonion specialist, or can you? I'm assuming you have to do [redacted] in core first.

Sczarni 5/5 5/55/5 ***

It must be earned in Core, yes.
