One of the players in my Kingmaker game wants to make a character that is an automaton. Is there any race that is a robot or anything similar?

I haven't really found anything yet, so I was planning to just go with a rules-human, but skinned to be robotic. He would still have to eat (fueled by organic compounds?) and sleep (his circuits overload after a day of activity and need to reset?) and breathe, etc. No weird immunities or anything, just IS a robot.

We're both huge fans of Steam Powered Giraffe, to the point where his gunslinger character is the son of Rex Marksley, so we both think it would epic (and so cool!) if we could get an automaton character in our game.

There's a 3PP creature template that could potentially work (and you could break it down into how powerful it might be for a PC with the Advanced Race Guide's race creation rules). You can find the clockwork automaton template here: Clockwork Automaton

Alternately, the new Inner Sea Bestiary coming out has rules for androids, which I think are going to be more up the alley you're looking for. Inner Sea Bestiary comes out in a few months, iirc.

I personally would recommend picking up the Advanced Race Guide and utilizing the rules for Half Construct creature type and building out a race to meet your exact specifications and power-level for your party :)

Depending on how much you dislike 3PP, these guys might suit you & your player's tastes. Yes, you would have to decide where & how they came to be in Golarion. There is also a slight amount of further edition adjustment you may feel needful as they were originally developed for 3.5 & there are one or two rough edges in the adaptation.


Numeria is right next to the place Kingmaker takes place, so it should work well.

This is basically what we ended up doing. He has the ARG, so we went and took a look at some of the stuff that's out there and wrote our own race. I actually wrote up both a full-construct race and a half-construct race, but he decided to go with the full construct and say that he's one of the gearmen from Numeria.

Meridia's Gearmen:
Type: Construct
Size: Medium
Speed: 20 (not slowed by armor)
Ability mods: +2 str, -2 dex, +2 int, -4 cha
Languages: Common, Ulfen, Aklo, Infernal, Abyssal, Draconic, Elven, Dwarven (just picked a few, since Golarion fluff isn't my strong suit)

Natural Armor +1

Vulnerable to electricity and acid

It comes out to be 15RP, which is on par with an aasimar or many of the other races that used to be +1 LA in 3.5.

Since one of the other players is playing an aasimar dark tapestry oracle, and really wants to play up the whole space alien angle, that gave me a great idea for how to incorporate their backstories into Kingmaker as well.

Ia! Ia! Yog-Sothoth!:

The oracle player has decided that his character was meant to be some kind of conduit for an army of destructive aliens, and I was going to put Carrion Hill in the campaign, so the first thing that popped into my head was that this oracle is a child of Yog-Sothoth. The Numerian connection comes in because the Silver Mountain crashed on Golarion after fleeing their homeworld's destruction at the hands of Yog-Sothoth. So I'm going to turn all the Gyronna cultists in the AP into Yog-Sothoth cultists, and have the gearmen show up as potential allies against the cult.


There are also the Androids in the Inner Sea Bestiary.


and the warforged from 3.5's eberron setting, which seem to fit well enough with some refluffing (god i love warforged).

The Inner Sea Bestiary being brand new, we didn't have access to it. What we had was the ARG. I know now that ISB has androids and gearmen, but IMC we're gonna stick with my version.

RD, the clockwork kin are quite an interesting concept. They're actually similar to a half-construct I came up with for my player before he decided on the full-construct version.

AndIMustMask, warforged are one of my favorite creatures/races/whathaveyou from any edition of the game. I didn't want to bring them over because it could set a precedent in my group for converting 3.5 stuff. I understand that in many groups that wouldn't be a problem, but my group would then begin looking for anything else they could get their hands on.


The Lifespark Construct Template might be helpful too. Are you and your player aware of the drawbacks/possibilities such a character has? This should be thought about well.


Here is my "Frankenstein" race:

Racial Qualities:

Type: Half-Construct +7RP
Size: Medium -RP
Speed: Normal(30 feet) -RP
Ability Mods: Specialized(+2STR,+2CON,-2CHA) 1RP
Languages: Linguist +1RP

Racial Abilities:

Natural Armour/IMP. NA (NA+2) +3RP
+2 saves vs. mind-affecting effects -RP
+2 saves vs. disease -RP
+2 saves vs. poison -RP
+2 saves vs. effects that cause either exhaustion or fatigue -RP

They age as the Clockwork Kin that Ravingdork posted. They are currently 13 RP.

You can easily change their name and stat mods. If you do the Standard it drops to 12RP.

The test ones I have made are surprisingly balanced and allow for some interesting combos.
