Maruusk, your training points area says you spent 5 on a feat, but you actually spent 7. You do still have 2 left.

No complaints here! I was trying to figure out how we could improvise a sled, and took a traditional Thanksgiving nap instead. ;)

And jeez louis, you keep on sending me back to the book, looking for things I can do. So, apparently I can treat poison! This is good. 8)

Revery is done and is now a bit smarter. We'll see if his owner is any smarter...

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

Not-so-random trivia: Heal checks can be made untrained. True fact. ;)

Thank the Tribunal you are going to treat him. I was starting to think that we'd have a cannibalism montage soonly.

p.s. <whispers> Don't eat him, he's poisoned. <whispers>

OK corrected the double Stealth skill and added this same image to sheet.

Quinaweniel char sheet

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

Totally random trivia: "An unarmed strike is two size categories smaller than the size of the character making the strike." (Found it on pg. 151.) So for everyone but Khae, it would be Tiny. Fixed.

Oh, and now I get to learn the grapple rules! Yay! (Um. That was only slightly sarcastic, since I actually like rules...)

ETA: To be clear, the thing where she yanked on her own hair was just flavor for the AoO. No actions taken yet.

<tag>

You have been yanked into the area at the edge of the ledge (2 on the map). You are prone.

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

I have an idea for the future! We could declare standard tactics, so that if you're posting daily but events are moving even faster than that, you'll still get to contribute what you'd want to.

There are two reasons why I thought of this. For one, I was going to cast Inner Fire on Maruusk if he agreed to storm the cave, but I didn't say so -- and so it didn't happen. (I was also going to suggest that he go first, but yeah. Didn't happen.) For the other, it has gradually floated to the top of my awareness that we're kind of leaving Revery out of this combat.

Revery has actually contributed quite a lot, but I've noticed that he tends to leave some money on the table when things get physical and move fast. He could've cast Strengthen on one or more of us, but he didn't get a chance when events suddenly jumped forward. Like my Inner Fire on Maruusk that never happened, that's the kind of thing where declaring conditional actions in advance could help.

Also, I don't recall Revery ever telling us about his Shallow Breath spell. As a gameplayer, I've read all of your character sheets carefully, to know what abilities and limitations I need to take into account from a practical perspective. However, as a roleplayer, Gwendalyn has no idea that Revery has a good combat spell, so she only thought of Quinaweniel casting from the ledge.

Also also, it's time for everyone to update their character sheets with clubs. We're not helpless anymore! ;)

I thought we were harmless.
What the initiative? When is Quina's turn?

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

That is a good point! We helped ourselves quite well; we just weren't very dangerous, until now. I stand corrected. :)

Xenh is using group initiative, so we're all lumped together. I happened to go first and resolve the AoO right away, since this (luckily) happened on a weekend; but when you see him say something like "(tag PC actions)", we can all go in any order.

Angels bleed from the tainted touch of my caress
Gandal wrote:

The short answer is now, gogogogogogogogog :)

The long answer is that the creature went first (there was no surprise round since everyone was surprised equally) and resolved its attack by trying to yank Gwen's wig off. Now it is the group's turn.

Now I have "tagged" the group to act and the order is determined by when each of you get to the group to post. Group initiative was discussed further back in the discussion thread here: LINK and also alluded to in the "errata" section of the Campaign Info tab here LINK.

This is one of the limitations of PBP that most DMs address by slowing the pace down. I would rather give a back rub to a poisonous flaming porcupine than slow the game down any further, so I request that the players become more efficient rather than making such concessions. Another solution people like to employ is a series of if/then statements (e.g. If I am attacked then I....), let's not do that. I would love for this to be read like a novel, not a Choose Your Own Adventure Novel. I try to never assume that your character is going to do something (like perform a specific action in combat), or have someone else play you, since its unwieldy.

24 hours ticked by between my posts. If you're holding off until people respond to you then keep me in the loop to slow my proverbial horses.

p.s. Take it as a gift from your DM because if you would have continued to chat then we'd be rolling another exposure check and that goblin had a sneak attack Gwen would likely be in character gen right now :)

Gwendalyn wrote:

My hope is that once you all have a chance to catch your breath (likely transpiring when some psycho permits you to catch a breath and stops throwing slavery, hungry reefs, exposure, waves, goblins, drowning, weather, storms, killer sharks, unconscious elves, and dragons at you) that conversations will transpire in character. Simply said if people hold their cards close to the vest and don't share, then it's not known and that might affect tactics as you have alluded to.

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

Well, never mind, then. I once again stand corrected. ;)

Male Mazinger-type Fan of Go Nagai level 38

This is why i ask for visual aids.....i couldn't see the order in the cave entrance and i didn't know where Quina was,so obviously i wrote "she enters the cave".
From what i understand she couldn't even cast yet with a vah shir and a a barbarian woman in the way (no line of sight).

edit:should have said before, but i'm first of all a DM in my home games.

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

This system is very forgiving in that respect, as I just learned about an hour ago. Pg. 174: "Cover is not a factor as long as it is no more than nine-tenths... As long as part of the target or area is not behind cover, the caster can have a line of effect to it." That's how Revery was able to cast his spell -- there was only 20% concealment. And both of you happen to have spells that don't require attack rolls.

Angels bleed from the tainted touch of my caress
Gwendalyn wrote:

I am fairly well entrenched in my style of DMing, and over the years I have made a number of changes to the way I run, so don't take it as if it has been disregarded out of hand. I will muse on it, and if I can see a way to mitigate some of my concerns then I will employ it. I always appreciate the input and even if it never goes live then there's always the possibility that it might form the framework of something related.

It will take awhile for everyone to get used to my crazed style of DMing, so I expect some fumbles, but I hope it won't take long for everyone to recognize that it is nothing less than complete genius (critical failure on modesty roll).

p.s. Another option is for you to start an EverQuest game and SHOW me your way of doing it. That might convince me quicker :) I'll play a bard! BRB off to make my bard.

Gandal wrote:

As stated previously this is not a game of more than basic visual aids (though it did take me awhile to make that map). Life without figurines requires you to pay close attention to what I write.

I wrote:
"There is an advantage, the creature is yanking her in, which will soon (next round) open up the entrance for Sajeek to enter behind her."

...and then in the same post:
"Only one of you can fit through the entrance at a time, ... (next round another can enter taking 1 move action to navigate the entrance)."

Just so we are both on the same page, were either of those written in a manner that was confusing permitting you to read that you could enter this round?

Gandal wrote:

I wrote:

"there is just enough room to fire around your companion"

...and then in the same post:
"Though the angle is not good (20% concealment) the rest of the party can launch one ranged attack at the monster."

Trying to understand if the disconnect is in reading that you could not cast after I wrote that.

Gwendalyn wrote:

Exactly correct!

Those that launch ranged attacks would need to contend with the cover. Those that are just fort saves based (as opposed to reflex rolls) just happen as long as you can see your target.

I read in a haste, think i missed some lines (was also playing Dragon's Dogma and planning the game for tomorrow-multitasking FTW)

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

Oh hi, Maruusk! Since people are talking about reading in haste, I just wanted to make sure that you noticed this. But actually... I think that Quinaweniel would be better at it. ;)

Xenh wrote:

Though there is only one place that a bear trap could be hidden, this place feels much less safe than it had moments prior. Maruusk sees an opportunity to ply his trade lest someone trip over a wire and kill everyone present. Then again no one knows of his nefarious vocation, so he has to decide if he will reveal it, or just let them go wandering off on their own and possibly find the traps for him. Such a decision might involve a great deal of screaming and arterial fluid.

All can search for traps, but only rogues excel at it (include a search check if you are searching for traps).

It is a delicious pass time of mine to punish those that barely pay attention to my game.

You escaped the bear trap this time....

<cues ominous music>

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

Speaking of paying attention... I just took the time to read a bit closer, and sometimes -- like in The Hound of the Baskervilles -- sometimes, it's what isn't there that matters.

Also, I was wrong above. Only rogues and bards can use Search to find a trap with a DC over 20 (pg. 121), so for traps it doesn't really matter that Quina has a better Search bonus.

Stop staring at my sooty hole!

(puts Gwen on the "to kill painfully" list)

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

What, really, that's what I get for reading carefully? So I'll just stop, then! <pouts> (doesn't actually dare stop)

I assumed Quina's shielding has expired, but she still hasn't cast more food and drink, she anyway has too few mana now.

It took hours to get from the shoreline to the cave with all of your supplies, so all buff spells cast previous to the move would have expired.

There's clothes, not cloths. Don't make me punch you in your sandy bits and don something before I have ants infest your loins.

I've been meaning to ask, light pick or heavy pick?

Light pick for a small creature.

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

Revery has three ranks in Trade Skill (Sculptor). What skill would he need to fashion a small dagger to use for his spell? Looking in the rules there doesn't seem to be anything relevant unless additional trades are included.

Smithing.

Smithing for a miniature dagger made of stone? Couldn't he carve one?

Angels bleed from the tainted touch of my caress
Revery wrote:

For the same reason that I do not permit Pathfinder players to make holy symbols out of mashed potatoes.

The reagent is a miniature dagger. We have rules for how to make such things, and the commensurate restrictions that come with them (blacksmithing requires a forge, dagger mold, hilt mold, sheet of metal and a DC 15 blacksmithing roll), so rather than make things more complicated we'll just default to those rules for ease of play rather than needing to make it unnecessarily unwieldy.

According to the book, the feat was 5 points, did I miss something?

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

According to table 3-2 on pg. 50, a bonus (trained) feat has a training point cost of 7. But since you had 5 + 7 = 12 training points, and 12 - 3 = 9, and 9 - 7 = 2, your current training points are correct.

Revery (Erudite Enchanter) in somnis veritas // Kspress (Iksar Monk) Your pain is the breaking of your shell.

Eggs-actly!

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

Character sheet changes: tweaked the presentation of Feats & Special Abilities (but not the substance), and stole Sajeek's idea of using Action Points to show the number of available training points.

@Sajeek: Since you actually have the Track feat, I suggest that you roll Wilderness Lore to see if you can identify the tracks. It isn't as much of a passive skill as Listen and Spot, so Xenh might not roll it for us. But that's just a quibble; to be clear, I really enjoy your well-considered posts. :)

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

So, the basis for my latest post is something I noticed recently on pg. 172. Supposedly, it only takes DC 5 + spell level to "[simply determine] what spell a sample of magical notation describes". Maybe it doesn't actually work that way in this game, but I'd rather not assume so. ;)

Male Mazinger-type Fan of Go Nagai level 38

I thought we couldn't read the spells.Or else Quina would have at least tried to roll for Spellcraft.
Not that Gwen cannot if she so wishes.

Tis true that you would be able to determine a 30,000' view of what you are studying.

My way of running that is to relay that it is in fact a spell (magical writing swims in your eyes and the paradoxical nature of it will cause madness if you stare too long), but you cannot determine more simply because it is not a spell for any caster class currently present (could be druid, necromancer, wizard, shadowknight, et cetera).

A different way to look at it would be that every class learns a different "language" for their spells, so you know your own spells since you recognize that they are in Farsi, and while you do not speak Gaelic (unless you multi-class), you recognize that it is not Farsi.

Higher level spells are like your "language" mixed in with a smattering of advanced calculus, mathematical proofs, redox chemistry, ethical dilemnas, theoretical physics and trying to understand why Justin Bieber matters on any level.

Gandal wrote:

Gandal has it correctly : )

Barbarian Shaman (Luminary Gwendalyn Shaughnessy the Giant Slayer)

Eh. I thought that might be the case, but figured it was worth trying anyway. ;) Love the explanation.

And I really want to express how much I'm enjoying the challenge of roleplaying a 17 year-old female barbarian with professional shamanic training, genius-level common sense, and average intelligence. Very unlike me and my usual characters.

Winter, and you are in the same season now.

Perhaps a different year...it is a blur of confusion and chaos.
