So a question about Day Jobs flavor - Another Newbie Question

Liberty's Edge 1/5

So my character is a Bartender. Which is fab.

I figure he lives in Absalom. Which is also fab.

So, do I just drift from bar to bar like the littlest hobo, earning sweet tips where I can? Do I have a regular gig at a nondescript bar that remains undefined for ease of play and story? Or can I pick a specific bar out of Absalom that I can say my character works at?

What happens when I eventually earn those 5 sweet PP and buy the Tavern perk? Do I take over an existing named/nondescript bar? Can I just make up my own?

Sorry if this sounds all... detail/fluffy/stuff. I just want to be able to go in to my first game knowing what I'm allow to say about who my character is.

Thanks a bundle guys. I haven't been this excited about a gaming experience in a long time.

I think it's great that you are thinking about this.

Anything you create is more or less considered non canon fluff. In the case of a place like Absalom with a population the size of well... beyond large for a Fantasy setting there are multitudes of bars, inns , dives etc. So feel free to make one up. Some people actually have a look through the regional information ie in this case the Absalom guidebooks and find a location/place/person and run with that.

I don't see any reason why you couldnt be working at that bar in your off hours.

Ive created a Fire Elementalist Wizard who has come to Absalom because he considers it one of the greatest places to learn from in the world. I have decided that he only accepts jobs either on the Isle of Kortos or in Absalom itself which means that Im only going to run him through scenarios set there. He is also a Tutor (thus Profession (Tutor)) and spends his time teaching people about Osirion History which he does out of a school there.

One thing to note, keep in mind that you might only have a short time to talk about your character. So perhaps devise a paragraph you can recite to everyone else which perhaps mentions unusual physical characteristics, an odd pet (or familiar), strange weapons. Unless the bar he works at wears a uniform they arnt going to know your character works at a Bar.

Awesome. Thanks for the answer Matthew. Trust me, I don't plan on boring people with a long winded description of my character. But he is a Priest of Cayden Cailean and Bartending is going to be very very important in his interactions with people. So I just want to be able to fall back on details if they come up.

"Ever hear of the Brandished Mug in Absalom? Well that is where I mind the counter and defend our Lords finest brews, and let me tell you a thing or two, working there shown me.... <insert whimsical or sagely bartending advice here>"

But yes! The information is exactly what I was looking for. My thanks again. I promise I won't pester you kind people to much more :3

Mordaith: You can feel perfectly fine with posting to the messageboards/forums. This is what they are here for .. discussion of PFS whether its 'fluff' or Crunch or the price of a CLW from a Lamashtu cleric.

Anyway good luck to you on future adventures.

Several of my PCs do business cards (print them myself). It would be great to get a card for a Pub in Absalom - where your PC "minds the counter and defend our Lords finest brews" - and everyone will remember you.

cards?:

I didn't get to GenCon this year, but a friend of mine did. He tells me he glanced over at the PC folder of the player beside him, and noticed one of my Clerics cards stuck into it. So he commented - and they both got a good laugh about my PC.

He told me when he got back from GenCon, and it made my day. Lots of fun, what gaming should be about.

Bartender is a legitimate profession. You can even get the Tavern vanity for a +1 to your profession: bartender and Gather information checks in the city where your tavern is located (most likely absolom or for season 4 somewhere in varisia)

Mordaith, you do need a skill point in Profession (Bartender), Craft (Beer) or which ever Profession, Craft or Performance skill you want to use for your Day Job roll. Otherwise you'll need to wait until you get enough Prestige Points to spend on a vanity that will utilize a different skill for the day job roll.

Have fun!

Cayden Cailean's clergy probably run a lot of taverns, with the cleric-bartenders acting as counselors/confessors. Just say you start out working at someone else's chapel-tavern, and once you buy the vanity, you move into your own establishment.

So Guinan was a cleric of Cayden Cailean? ;)

*coughs* I may have taken Skill Focus: Profession (Bartender)

Maybe...

Yeah.. I'm a bad player :3

Is there an upper limit of how many times you can buy the Tavern Vanity? I read in the Field Guide that you could buy the same business more than once. Doing this represented your business growing/expanding.

I like the idea of my character having a really big/popular bar somewhere eventually. Even if it is just in the background as flavor. Food taste boring with out the spice, if you catch my drift.

Are you also slow-tracking your experience so you end up with more day job rolls? Gold from a scenario is halved, but not the day job...

Mordaith, I really like the effort you are putting into your background. That's the sort of thing that makes RPGs so much fun, IMHO. Some people don't even bother with PFS character backstories and I think they are missing a great opportunity to enhance the fun factor of the game.

I have a name plate card holder in front of me during play. My Chellish Lawyer has the name of his legal firm and the advertising line "Contracts and Legal Advice - Mundane and Infernal". Everyone can see it... and periodically I offer "legal" advice, so go for it... its what makes a character... well, a character, and not just a list of stats and feats.

Shadow Lodge 1/5

I have an Alchemist w/ profession: Barbacue chef. I obviously can't use a vanity for this, but I do put a point in every level. However, I write the skill into the character background and RP. Flavor wise for example, his resturaut is powered by methane from the outhouse, as is his normal bombs. When he got frost bombs it was because customers wanted cold drinks on tap. He believes in family values such as 'drugs solve problems' (Mum and Dad were both under philters of love and had three half orc children; him and his two sisters) and 'it's bad manners to eat anyone you converse with.'

Nice to know I'm not the only one to think that lawyer would be a good character profession.

"It's worth mentioning that the big church of Cayden Cailean in Absalom *is* a tavern - I'm sure you could get the odd gig there... provided it hasn't burned down recently. It does always seem to be in some stage of rebuilding!

That said, I should mention that I often throw quite lavish soirees at my little place in the Petal District, the Palazzo di Incantare, and it's always a chore finding a discerning mixologist who can serve a rather sophisticated and... demanding clientele. A barman with a sense of adventure might be just the thing... I'm quite generous both with compensation and referrals, if you'd like to get into some society gigs ;)"
