I wouldn't say it was an update or two ago, Vivisectionist was made illegal when the 4.2 guide became official, and the rebuild rules allow you to change the character entirely, sell everything back at full price if you don't want it now, basically because the archtype was banned you can change the character into whatever, keeping the same xp, prestiege/fame, character number, total gold value, etc.

First, why was the Vivisectionist made ilegal for play?
Because flavour text like this...
A vivisectionist studies bodies to better understand their function. Unlike a chirurgeon, a vivisectionist’s goals are not related to healing, but rather to experimentation and knowledge that most people would consider evil.
...isn't in keeping with the mood of the Pathfinder Society (either in game or out of game).
Second, what exactly are the stipulations for me to alter the character?
See the 'Playtests and Errata' section on page 28 of the 'Guide to PFS Organised Play'.

Flavor text is jsut that, flavor text. I play a Ninja that is from Ustalav and wouldn't know a Tian Ninja from Adam. The mechanics of the Vivisectionist worked pefectly with my dwarven drunken brute barbarian, who in his off time from the society happens to work as an appothacary.
This is irritating...
I am not a fan of the bomb throwing alchemist and the Vivisectionist was a pefect alteration while still leaving me the parts I wanted. I have absolutely no idea what I am going to do with the character now and I am supposed to be playing him soon to finish the Shipyard Rats scenarios.
Oh well.
Thank you for the infomation at any rate.
