I liked last night's a lot as well. I enjoy when they back up and do some characterization.

So, uh, did I miss something?

Spoiler:

One minute they're barely holding back the zombie swarm from breaking down the barn doors, the next minute, it's morning and everyone's asleep? Did the tree fall on the zombies, thus ending the threat, or was that a dream sequence? I'm not particularly happy either way, but feel like I must've missed something.

Still, I'm liking this season. I'm just confused.

At first I was like, wait.....what? Then I kind of liked the idea of not knowing if the storm and tree ended the onslaught or if it was just a dream sequence and dumb luck.

The thing that kind of bugged me was Maggie being hard on the priest. Her father was a religious yet flawed man who she loved very much. Sure the priest did a pretty awful thing and Id imagine most people would treat him like dirt but I dont imagine Maggie would. Though maybe she has just run out of sh!@s to give.

Right there with you, my rainbow equine friend. 'Twas very confusing. I just drink a beer an roll with it. I did try to come up with a good "tree falling in the forest joke", but apparently my brain isn't fully functional yet this morning.

Perhaps a third cup of coffee.....

spoiler:

Im not buying that they cant find water. Poor area knowledge check. To get from Richmond (Noah's family's place) to within 60 miles they wouldve had to cross 2 major rivers with 2-3 more to go before hitting DC.

also, how in the world could they have left the map back at the church?

I think this was supposed to be a be an episode about faith and hope and the loss of both (and regaining it possibly). In Maggie's case she has just been burned to many times and seems to have lost her faith - yet the episode closes with a bit of a miracle. I think the priest just symbolizes that resentment she has towards putting energy and faith in a higher power - so Gabriel gets to be the punching bag.

It continues with the theme with emo Daryl at the beginning of the episode to him coming to terms about both Beth and Tyreese near the end.

Can't wait for the new nemesis to show up on scene - should be good times once the group has something to fight.

Bugged me too. I had flashbacks to Dallas in the 1980s.

And yes, I remember that. Get off my lawn you darn kids! :-)

And this dude at the end, I'm hoping he doesn't turn out to be another douchebag

Please. Of course he's a douchebag. Aside from Rick and crew (and sometimes including Rick and crew), there is no other kind of person left in the post-zombie south, it seems.

I read the comics so I have a good idea of what's going on. nyaa-nyaa. : P

Spoiler:
The last ep, "Them", was trying to set things up, but was kinda clunky. The characters need to be scraping the bottom of the barrel and pretty far gone- reduced to eating worms and dogs and digging for water.

I thought the scenes of the zombie mob in slow pursuit were really good. I think even more could have been done with characters becoming hopeless and lost in despair. Daryl's scenes were well done, but Maggie went much lower in the comic.

Holding the barn door was a good transition, but convenient natural disasters feel like lazy writing. and yeah, it was really confusing.

Good to finally see Aaron and I'm interested to see how the next part plays out.

Scarab Sages

Once again, I enjoyed....

Spoiler:
Although I thought it started off kind of slow, the episode picked up when they got on the road. Especially when the two vehicles got separated and the car ran into the herd. Really intense scenes in those woods.

And I thought it interesting - when Michonne first showed up, she was still very much in a "we've got to keep moving, you can't trust these people" frame of mind. Rick seemed to be in that same place at the beginning, but you could see caution and hope battling it out. And not caution really, but outright paranoia. Couldn't blame him though - the last "sanctuary" they came across tried to eat them.

It was a nice touch at the end, to see hope start to win out when he heard the children playing. My only problem with that - wouldn't the cries of children playing attract the walkers?

Also, where the f~!# did they get all that steel to build their walls? And how the hell did they survive long enough to build them? I guess those are answers we'll have to either wait for, or accept that's just the way it is.

I had the same question as your last one, Aberzombie, not the least of which is due to the relatively small time frame involved from the start of the series until now. I'm not quite as hopeful that it will get answered, but perhaps.

Scarab Sages

In speaking to my brother, who has read the comics, the answer is potentially forthcoming.

I once again enjoyed last night's episode. I think it really showed how far Rick had broken. The acting was superb. I think I know where they end up next, but don't know what happens when they get there. When the characters have to move, it tends to be a bit more exciting...

This was a really good episode tonight. I can see a turning point, a new dynamic that'll make things really interesting. As long as they don't make Daryl a bad guy. He's one of my favorites.

Spoiler:
A few thoughts:

I wonder if Congresswoman saw through Carol's bullshit. That was some funny shit.
Congresswoman's son - dead man. Glen's going to f##+ his world up.
His gate guard buddy - dead man. Daryl will end him.
Smoking "My wife cut your hair" dude - dead man. This poor bastard just does not know who he's f$%@ing with. Rick will gut him and wear his entrails as a scarf.

I look forward to the new Ricktatorship.

Wormer, he's a dead man!

Marmalard, dead!
Niedermeyer - dead!

The first thing I thought of when I read your spoiler.
Agree with everything you posted +1000.

It's also nice to see the return of Officer Friendly.

Scarab Sages

Some further thoughts...

Spoiler:
I wasn't too keen, from an engineer's point of view, on the whole "experimental, sustainable community" powered by rainbows and unicorn farts....I mean solar panels. Unless there's some other source of power to make up for the intermittence.

On the other hand...f!@@ it, it's Hollywood. Part of that whole industry is powered by the idea of unicorn farts.

How that confrontation at the gate should have gone:

Congresswoman's son: "I was in ROTC. You have to listen to my orders."

Glen: "I ran THROUGH a herd of Walkers, but stopped to rescue Tara, when I was escaping the ruined prison.
Michonne: "I used to keep some Walkers as pets. And I can cut your head off in 2 seconds."
Daryl: I can live off the land with just a crossbow and a knife. Also, I probably used to f&%% guys like you in prison.
Carl: " I shot my own mother's corpse in the head so she wouldn't turn."
Rick: "I tore a man's throat out with my teeth."

And that would have been when that little punk pissed himself.

Sovereign Court

I hear ya Aberzombie;

spoiler:
I have a feeling Congress woman knows they need experience bad and Rick and fam are the answer. Though the son thinks hes hot sh!@ and is going to wreck the plan.

Aberzombie,

The filming for the Alexandria Free Zone is done in Senoia, Georgia and on Talking Dead last night they showed some of the building of the sets. They built some new houses for the show, but a lot of exterior shots and the shots of solar panels and such are all really there in the town.

"Ricktatorship" is now my new favorite word.

I had no idea ROTC prepared one for the zombie apocalypse

It prepares people for being douchebags pretty well if this is any indication. And since most of the survivors we've come across so far are douchebags too, maybe they all had ROTC training?

The people on the show are so dumb. I am now rooting for the zombies to win!

My friend told me the show was good. Now I watch an episode every few months, just so I have more to tell him about how dumb the show is.

I cannot claim credit for that one. I read it in an article somewhere and it stuck with me.

Spoiler:
I think the Wolves, the ppl that made the torso farm and camperfullofheads, are following the group and will attack the compound. Blame will fall on the Rickatatorship and chaos ensues. There's no way Daryl wants to stay in this utopia...Carol either. They may split off? I have wavered close to Kenderkins idea of the zombies winning, because of the lack of intelligence on the group's part. Why havent they asked umpteen million questions about the place? Posted their own guards and barricaded their grouphome? THOROUGHLY searched their new houses? The slickster running the place is probably a psychologist or some kind of huckster reading the group and giving them what they want in a wish-fulfillment thing. I also think Rick should probably die in the attack and maybe Morgan could save the group in a deus-ex-machina type situation (like Carol at Terminus) and take over as leader (co-leader with Carol?).

I think the new story line is a nice change of pace and I welcome the opportunity for the authors to explore "the next stage" of the post-apocalypse narrative. So far the fifth season feels like a breath of fresh air.

It's interesting to see the characters in contrast to 'normal' people and realize how much their experiences have hardened them.

I really enjoyed Carol's acting in the last episode. The scenes where she's 'struggling' to remove the assault rifle and describing herself as a den mother were hilarious! It'll be interesting to see if the congressperson picks up on that, if her people reading skills are as good as she thinks they are.

Spoiler:
I'm waiting to see what's with the young girl (Enid?). They said she's another survivor from outside. Where is her family? The people that traveled with her? It's unlikely she survived on her own. If she did come in on her own, then she's probably a plant, sent in to scope out the place ahead of an attack. If they just put her in as a romantic interest for Carl, I would be sorely disappointed.

Can someone explain to me why the people do dumb stuff?

"Jim you going to live through the night?"
"Sure, Tom go to sleep"
"You lock the door?"
"Yep, were safe."

Hours later Jim dies, awakens Tom by biting his jugular......

Koka, koga, tong, whatever they would use the knowledge of ancient scrolls and not consistently make such dumb choices. I have no "secrets".....

So people are dumb because one of their friends randomly dies in his sleep for no reason and they didn't see it coming?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Thing is, people die in their sleep frequently. Even in a world with modern medicine and functional hospitals. Especially old people.

If dying automatically makes you come back as a zombie, it makes sense to take precautions to isolate people while sleeping. There's another zombie movie (that I can't remember the name off atm) that takes this into account and depicts residents of a moderately sized city locking themselves into separate (sturdily built) bedrooms and apartments when they go to bed.

Which is practical when the only shelter you can find is a barn or a one room shack?

I was thinking of Alexandria and the Prison, not when they're on the road.

Oh lord don't get me started on the prison!

No excuses to have individual cells, no excuse not to secure the cell doors.

No excuses for not setting passive defenses in the open areas, inside the fence.

No excuse to not utilize razor wire to delay the tank, b/c razor wire is a b%*#! to remove from tracks.....

Eh, it doesn't really bother me. Ultimately you have suspend your disbelief to buy into the idea that a modern military would be defeated by zombies as shown in TWD anyway.

It is nice that the writers seem to rely less on the characters making awful decisions than in previous seasons though.

You know.... It just didn't hit me that hard till you pointed it out, but then I get distracted easily; oh hey look flowers.

I agree. I got it during Carol's interview, but until it was pointed out I missed the play acting with the rifle.

Scarab Sages

That was....pretty cool.

Spoiler:
Holy Shit, Carol. Why don't you just gather all the children in one location and let them watch as a Walker eats a puppy? With shit like that going on, I don't think it'll be too long before her secret is out and everyone realizes she's one badass survivor.

But I do like this little secret council going on between Carol, Rick, and Daryl. They are easily my three favorite characters, and to see the three of them plotting the inevitable takeover in such a no-nonsense way makes me happy. Still, if they wanted people to be less suspicious, why did they all come back in the gate at the same time?

Looks like poor Sasha has a bad case of PTSD going on. Here's hoping it doesn't get her (or someone else) killed. Though it probably will.

Ultimately, I can see that the people of Alexandria are in for a very rude awakening. It's going to be interesting to see which ones come through whatever end-of-season shenanigans the writer's have planned, and how those survivors will be changed.

That was some pretty intense stuff.... You don't F with Carol...

well, once you do something stupid and nuke a city , the people die, and rise up as a zombie swarm then I can see it happening. Smart soldiers would be pretty much zombie proof... but their ammo depot, tank maintenance mechanic, cook, supply clerk...

it takes 10 people behind the lines to keep one person on it. Take them out and the soldiers are in trouble.

Someone should be out there broadcasting with a ham radio though.

Given the opening scene of last episode, does anyone else think that putting Sasha in a tower with a sniper rifle is a really, really bad idea?

Hmm probably not to Rick. He will probably give her a specific target. Maybe one guy with a wife, a particular wife that maybe Rick fancies? Man that scene was great when Rick reaches back for his "secret gun" while staring down Jessie and her husband. Looks like Rick has got a dual personality going on. There is the officer friendly rick with his silver hand cannon, and then there is been in the sh!@ too long Rick and his pocket gun measuring you for what he can take from ya!

I'd say the best way to fight zombie hordes isn't with traditional military forces, but a large pit and a boombox. As shown quite recently, zombies will happily jump off a bridge in order to reach whatever it is they're chasing, with predictable results. IE the best military setup you could have to clear large-scale zombie groups is a company of army engineers and some reconnaissance troops, ideally in helicopters.

In other news AMC's making a Walking Dead companion series set to take place immediately before and during the zombie apocalypse. That has potential! :)
