229. A life spent working as a butcher prepared you for this new role. After the orcs attacked the farmstead, and you stuck a meatcleaver in that raiders skull, and then found that it had a few gold coins in it's belt pouch, more money that you made all last year of honest work, you realized that you'd spent your life cutting the wrong throats.

The life of the adventurer calls!

231. The fortune cookie you got last night had no fortune in it, and everyone who saw says you have no fate, and they are shunning you.

232. The fortune cookie you got last night said you were living in interesting times, and you don't want to be around when it comes true.

233. The fortune cookie you got last night had a note from the cook in it, and she's a real looker, and wants you to walk her back to her home, a year's travel from here.

236. Your mother has entrusted you with selling the family cow for a sizeable amount of gold, enough to feed your poor family for a month. You come across a shady looking salesman who offers you magic beans in exchange for your cow. Realizing what an opportunity it is, you call the town guard to arrest the fradulent salesman. You are rewarded by the mayor for stopping another fleecing scam that has been plaguing your poor town. Sure it's a rusty old sword and a deputy's badge, but it felt good to be recognized. It occurs to your that adventuring must feel the same way, so you go sell off that cow and make sure your family is secure until you can send them back some money from your adventuring profits. You set off with the sun behind your back and a cool wind in your face.

...You were never heard from again.

245: You always knew the town was evil. The logging camp is staffed by zombies. Last month you met a unicorn. You had to touch it just to see if it was real, and it bit you. You thought it smelled this town on you. The first night of the full moon this month, you blacked out, and somebody killed the corrupt mayor. Tonight you are guarding the main gate, so you hid all your gear out in the woods. You have a feeling when you wake up in the morning, there won't be much left of this town.

247: The sherif killed your father and skipped town so you and the boys are headed out aftter him.

248: your uncle was always a bit...eccentric. He passed away last week and he left something interesting for his favorite nephew; a map with no names and weathered old chapbook. Amid the moldering pages are a description of something called the Scribe's Light and descriptions of locales where it's components might be found. Local legend holds that if the Scribe's Light is in the right spot on the night of the full moon on the moors, it will reveal the final resting place of a fabulous treasure. Perhaps it's time to collect up your friends and go scavanger hunting?

251. Every generation They come out of the misty shadows of night, eating, killing and worse until Their appetites are sated. Sometimes those psychopathic little bastards kill you first. Sometimes they kill you last while they're eating and molesting you at the same time. All you know is that the new moon has come full on Helloween night ... time for you and your friends to make yourselves scarce!

251-a (a variation): you get one night; one night to leave this...zoo, this prison, whatever you call it. During that one night you get to feel, if just for a few hours, like a human again. But the minute you leave the Mists...there's the hunger.

Yet for all the hunger and the waiting, when finally the dawn draws close enough to burn your brume-laden path back to your hell, there are a precious few moments when you're REALLY back, and all you want is some contact, some communication.

The humans call it mollestation; depredation. They curse you and send their greatest to hunt and destroy you, before your senses are fully your own. But this year, as the FULL moon empowers your flesh, you find yourself fully in control for as long as you can remember. You have one night, just as long as the moon shines upon your rotting corpse, for you to make yourself known and beg for the release you've earned from this terrible torment.

Nice!

252. The festival of St Erd is in full swing and the Harlevesken Gypsies have come as they do each summer to entertain the fairgoers. But this year there are 3 women among them, the most beautiful you've ever seen. What's more, after staying for each of their shows you and several other men from Erdanstadt are on hand for their performance at the end of the night - a highly provocative one at that.

You, fellow patrons, and several other gypsy girls are summoned up into the performance and the dance becomes something more as the night wares on. Somewhere along the way your perceptions fail and you must have blacked out. You awaken in the morning, far from the fair and even the town, in the middle of the woods; around you are the hideous, staring corpses of everyone else with you last night, save the 3 primary performers.

Worst of it all is you. While those around you are naked, you're clothed in bloody attire, yet you're unharmed. In your hand is a knife, similarly soiled by the gore. You have no recollection of what happened last night but whatever it was, you were a part of it and it's only survivor.

260. You've always been quiet but pious; devoted to your felow man as well as the teachings of your god. Yet in all your years he'd never revealed himself to you. Last night you had a dream; no, it was a VISION. In this vision you bore witness to an apocalypse that consumed your town and all you held dear with hellfire. Devils rode the sky and danced in the ashes. Then your god turned to you, his cloven hooves scraping the cracked earth beneath them, and uttered the words "Our compact is complete." and with that a gout of flame leapt at your face. You awoke screaming, the smell of charred flesh and brimstone still smoldering in your memory; your eyes are coated now in the scars and soot of what you witnessed. It was no dream...

265) Your older brother left six years ago, ratty old spellbook in hand, and three years later, the wandering merchants expressed amazement that the great wizard he became came from your little village, and that you were related to such a legendary arcanist. The next year, your older sister left, her well-worn hand-crafted bow slung over her shoulder, and this last fall, a traveller regaled your family with tales of how she slew the cyclops savage that had riled up the orcs of the Fellwood, and was starting her own legend. You looked around at the rapt faces of your peers, unaware that they would never be the focus of such stories, so long as they just sat and listened.

You stopped listening and packed your bags. It's your turn.

266. 99 years. Your family has been chained to the same...stinking...plot of land for 99 years. In all that time, FIVE generations, not a one of you has ever made it more than few thousand feet from your front door. Just yesterday the feudal lord was discovered as the crook he is and four righteous adventurers came by, recruited a mob and stormed the castle; you're the only one left to carry on from YOUR family though some others survived. This morning Jon the Miller said the adventurers left but soon the sheriff would be here and with him a new lord and life would return to how its been for...the last...99 years. That's when you realized your father's axe would make a decent weapon and your grandfather's coat of studded leather armor was still serviceable, and no one would notice you'd left for another 2 days at least...

You haven't had a decent conversation in months. You have to go find another druid or a ranger or a wizard who habitually prepares speak with animals or something before you go mad.

286. The dreaded Great Wyrm Pink Dragon of AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!! You won't admit to knowing about it ... but It is why you're leaving.

287. The Pink Cavalier.
