Charlotte, NC: What's everyone playing?

Gamer Connection

So after noting that 3 of the final 4 from the last RPG Superstar were from NC, it go me to wondering why I haven't encountered more like-minded souls here in Charlotte.

For my part, my local Pathfinder group gets together on Tuesday evenings typically meeting up at New Zealand Cafe for sushi before heading back to my townhouse near McAlpine Park (S. Charlotte near Matthews). Games tend to be of the beer & pretzel variety, but the gang really loves getting into character and finding creative solutions to the encounters they come up against.

At this time, group demographics are...

M 36 (me/GM)
M 41
M 36
F 24
F 22
F 22
M 22

So then, who are you, where have you been hanging out, and what are you playing? Be cool to meet up and say hi at the upcoming ren faire at least. :)

There are certainly a few gamers in Charlotte.

For myself, I've been in a couple of groups. The first is my Sunday Pathfinder homebrew that has been going on for about a year and a half. It's a pretty good group consisting of myself, my wife, an old college friend of mine and her husband, and a couple of 29/30 year old guys. At 37, I'm the oldest in the group, as my wife is inclined to continuously remind me. We're on a hiatus from that game at the moment - the two youngest guys have had real life intrude, so the rest of us have started playing Marvel Heroic for the time being in the interim, with the hopes that we might be able to pick up the old game in a couple months.

The other is a Tuesday night Carrion Crown game - it's an all male group with a pretty broad age range.

Both games play at my place in Mint Hill.

Ah, two of my players are a brother and sister who presently live in Mint Hill. As for the age thing... well, most of my players are a whole generation younger than me (met at the ren faire when they were still in high school) so I know all about being the oldest (roommate only just moved in 2 months ago). :)

When I was in grad school, I was in a group with a bunch of undergrad. During one session, someone mentioned that one of my d20's was so worn that it was approaching spherical, and I explained that it was one of the dice that came with the old red box D&D Basic set in 1983.

The guy looked at me in horror for a moment before saying, "Dude, your dice are older than ME."

Haha! Well I didn't begin playing until my sophomore year in high school (1991-92), so my oldest dice aren't quite as old as some of my players, but it is pretty damn close. :D

Say, if any of your group heads to the ren faire on Sundays next month, I'll be the guy wearing the Skyrim Nightingale armor. Alternately, just ask one of the flower girls for "Elf" and they should be able to point you in the right direction. :)

Clearly, I'm a gamer in the Charlotte area. For a long time, I ran games at UNC-Charlotte as part of the Sci-Fi Fantasy Guild there. When my wife and I moved down past Ballantyne in the Blakeney area, I stopped driving the 40 minutes or so to game on campus. Plus, the generational turnover there always left me feeling a bit out of touch with the current crop of gamers.

Then I discovered Above Board Games in the Fort Mill/Tega Cay area just across the border into South Carolina. It's about a 25 minute drive for me. I started a couple of campaigns there a few years ago (i.e., Rise of the Runelords and Curse of the Crimson Throne). Since RPG Superstar took off and my frequent freelancing for Paizo, I've scaled back my active gaming mostly to just online play-by-post games here on the messageboards and the occasional one-shot at local conventions (i.e., ConCarolinas and MACE).

Hey Neil, I live in Ballantyne, near Stonecrest. We're playing Pathfinder and have room for another if you want to join a group a little closer to home.

That's definitely a lot closer to home. I live just down from Stonecrest, past Blakeney and the Union County line. How often does your gaming group play? And what kind of campaign are you running?

Liberty's Edge

We usually meet on Fridays evenings about 6:00-6:30 until whenever. We sometimes do Saturday nights if too many family obligations come up on a given Friday.

Our current campaign is intentionally vague. We have a few members of the group whose personal lives are a bit murky at the moment, and so their attendance varies. We set things up so that the game can progress if anyone or even a couple of people can't make it. Our characters are part of specially formed group that are being sent on missions aimed at trying to prevent a large-scale war. Each player has multiple characters of varying classes, so we can mix and match for adventure requirements and player attendance.

We're all older. Mid-thirties to forties.

I'm involved in one game in the Monroe area, usually every other Saturday, but I am always looking for more people to game with. I am another old fart (43) and I've been playing forever.

Liberty's Edge

I play in the game with Dr. Tom in the Carrion Crown Game (hey Tom ;) Its Mike). Have ran RotRL until the party all moved away.

I currently have Sundays open for gaming now. I live in Matthews and have been gaming since the inception of RPG's and yes that does make me old ;) lol

Huh, I had no idea there were so many Charlotte gamers.

I'm another Charlotte resident, but I haven't gotten involved in anything local in years. My gaming has been an IRC game with a bunch of guys from around the country with surprising longevity (5 years now).

I just left Games HQ in Charlotte looking for players. I have been looking for a game (really any game at this point) for some time.

It is good to see that Charlotte does have a good scene, hopefully Ill be able to find a home soon.

If any of you are still looking, Im a law school student with limited free time and a family, therefore I prefer to play weeknights. I live in Plaza Midwood but have a vehicle and have no problem driving for my hobby.

Take care,
Ian

Games HQ off Old Pineville? How's Howard doing anyway?

Liberty's Edge

I know the feeling Ian. Im needing a steady game to get my RP fix in on. Anyone know of a game on Sunday that could use a player?

of failing that, Ill look at starting one myself.

You know Howard was a big part of welcoming me to the area and the gaming community here. He is a crusty old dude with a big heart and personality to match.

I think Games HQ is doing well. I have visited on three weeknights so far, and each night had a crowd, I know crowd does not always equal success in FLGS but it might be an indicator. If anything, it reaffirms my conclusion that Charlotte is a gaming town.

Dread, Sunday night isn't perfect for me but Ill let you know what I find and if you would do likewise I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Any of you know people a little further up north in Mooresville that play?

Mooresville is where my group current group originally came from. Met them at the ren faire when they were still in high school and 6 years later we're still playing together.

If the age on your profile is accurate, I wouldn't be surprised if you went to school together. Where are you a student now?

BTW, that username/first-name combo sounds veeery familiar. You wouldn't happen to have a younger sister named Darlene would you?

Nah, I'm not originally from here. I'm originally from WA state, attending NTI right now. Didn't realize I seemed like someone else haha.

Ah ok. Thought you might have been my friend's big brother, Kyle. :)

Anyway, like I mentioned in your other thread, stop by the firearms department of Gander Mountain and ask for Phil. He used to be in my Mooresville group and I know he is still an avid player of a few different RPGs and wargames.

Gotcha. I'll have to do that. Any way you can give him a heads up so it kills the entire 'awkward' situation lol?

Sure thing!

Edit: Just talked to Phil. He doesn't have a fixed schedule but he almost always works weekends plus 3-4 days during the week. He just wanted me to warn you that stopping by this weekend wouldn't be a good idea since it's Black Friday and they're slammed. ;)

I kinda figured that one haha. I feel sorry for my girlfriend cause she's at work today dealing with all of that. I'll try and see him sometime next week.

In case any of you aren't friends with Howard on fb, he had a mild heart attack last Thursday. He is doing ok, but I am sure he would love to hear from his customers. Gmaeshq owner on fb.

Dang Laithoron, I wish I had seen this thread before Mrs. Bell and I went to the ren faire a couple weekends ago. I would have loved to share a cold one with a fellow Paizonian. We came from Fayetteville, where there are several groups I know of. I have to turn away players all the time because I have two full groups.

I did run into xylphryx at the ren faire. He's one of the Asheville PFS group--we know him from Paizocon.

Well at least now we know for next year. :) Do you guys ever visit DragonCon or attend any other events in the area?

We went to ConTemporal in Chapel Hill this year but we haven't really been into the local con scene. We'd be interested, we just haven't gotten into it so far.
