Enhancing a Companion

Advice

Are there any feats that will add power to a companion? Similar to how a Wizard/Sorcerer can summon a more powerful familiar, I was hoping to find something that would allow a Druid/Ranger to acquire something more than just a standard animal.

I've looked through what sources I have and I've yet to see anything useful, in fact, it seems like most caster feats are designed for Clerics/Paladins and Wizard Sorcerers.

I find it odd that Wizards/Sorcerers can have things like devils, demons, and dragons as familiars but a Druid is limited to only normal animals, not the dire variety or even a magical beast (which they are allowed to raise and domesticate)

Any ideas?

Boon Companion is a great feat for Rangers or multiclass Druids. I'm not aware of anything else (although giving your AC barding is highly recommended). They could also be equipped with additional magic items, at your GM's discretion.

Pathfinder Maps, Starfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Maps, Starfinder Roleplaying Game, Starfinder Society Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

There is also the Mammoth Rider prestige class, but that one works better for a ranger, cavalier, or paladin than it does for a druid since it does not advance spellcasting.

Do you have access to feats from previous editions or third party sources?

Looks like it's Feat making time then...

those are all the feats for 3.5 just apply filter to find and ask you DM if the feats you want are cool with him / her.

I think there was a feat or ability in 3.x that allowed druid to take magical beasts...

Here's a list of 3.x templates

Quick idea:

I would make it a feat, call it "Cohorted Companion", available at 7th+ druid-equivalent level. Your cohort gains a +1 template or becomes "awakened". Either way, turns into a magical beast, retaining all the advantages of being an AC. Continues to progress as an AC (no class levels for you!)

This feat is taken in place of leadership.

If your cohorted companion dies, a new one can be acquired when you next gain a level.

So the paladin could gain Battlecat (tm)

@ Darkwarriorkarg there is a feat that already gives the druid companion the celestial or fiendish template in the 3.5 o 3.0 book called complete divine or its in the book called complete champion.

The Exchange

There is a 10k item in ultimate equipment That awakens your companion after a week.

There is a similar feat for Aasimars in PF too.

It's named Celestial Companion, I believe... Not sure, though. I think it's from ARG or BoA.

It gives the companion the Celestial template, which is pretty powerful, but it does come with Spell Resistance, which can (and will) be a nuisance.

This peaked my interest so I had to investigate:

COLLAR OF THE TRUE COMPANION:

PRICE 10,000 GP AURA moderate transmutation CL 9th WEIGHT 1 lb.
Although it appears to be a simple thong of leather, this collar was initially conceived by druids who believed that there were animals who possessed spirits worthy of elevation to true sentience. If worn by a creature of the animal type with an Intelligence less than 3, a collar of the true companion grants a +2 enhancement bonus to Intelligence. This does not give the animal the ability to speak, but it does allow it to understand one spoken language (chosen by the item’s creator).

If the collar is worn for at least 1 week by a creature of the animal type, the creature is raised to humanlike sentience, as though by the awaken spell. Once this occurs, the collar loses its magical properties.

If a collar of the true companion is worn for more than 1 week by a creature not of the animal type, the wearer is feebleminded until the collar is removed.
COST 6,000 GP CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS Craft Wondrous Item, awaken, fox’s cunning

Unfortunately, it appears that it actually awakens the animal companion, which prevents it from remaining an animal companion. It seems that this is most useful if you want to give an animal, especially an animal with 1 intelligence, the ability to understand a language without investing ability score points gained from advancement. You just have to remember to remove it every few days... For your typical animal companion with 2 intelligence, it seems better to bump them at 4th level and save the 10,000 gp. This isn't the most useful item for player characters. Not that it is relevant here, but at this moment the collar is explicitly excluded from Pathfinder Society Organized Play (PFS).

I found it afterwards

Book of exhalted deeds (although like most of content, there's nothing particularily exhalted about the feat, considering that summon monster allows you to summon celestial/fiendish animals)

This Aasimar feat is in the Advanced Race Guide. This is kinda neat, but I agree that the spell resistance could get annoying after a while. Without spell penetration, and the like, you are looking at as much as a 25% failure rate to cast spells on your companion unless they can lower their SR as a standard action. The companion with the highest charisma is a Deinonychus (Velociraptor) with 14 charisma. Familiars don't seem to be any better off.

CELESTIAL SERVANT:

Rather than being a normal animal or beast, your companion or familiar hails from the heavenly realms.
Prerequisites: Aasimar, animal companion, familiar, or mount class feature.
Benefit: Your animal companion, familiar, or mount gains the celestial template and becomes a magical beast, though you may still treat it as an animal when using Handle Animal, wild empathy, or any other spells or class abilities that specifically affect animals.
