12th level Texans, report!

Local Play

Grand Lodge 4/5 Venture-Agent, Texas—Houston

Planning begins soon for Owlcon 2013, and one of the questions in consideration is "Do we want to run Eyes of the Ten this year?"

If you have a 12th level character, or will have one by February 2013 and are likely to be in attendance at Owlcon, post here so you can be counted and tables planned.

Grand Lodge 4/5

Maybe? My cleric just made 10th level, only 6 scenarios from 12 in 5-6 months should be achievable.

Dark Archive 3/5

My Ranger is 2 scenarios away from 12th now and *SHOULD* hit 12th this month. (barring irrecoverable deaths)

The Exchange 5/5

(wow... I came in here to see if this was a new GunSlinger Archetype... I think I'll slip away now.)

"Ranger" is already taken for that hack, "Oh, I've got a bow!" class.

Real Rangers wear Stetsons.

The Exchange 1/5

Roagh should be level 12... as long as I can find one last mod to run him through.

The Exchange 4/5

Hazzard is 10 (Fighter 8 / Ranger 2) and being slow played til 12. I'm not getting the games in to level him up, mostly because of my nocturnal schedule preventing me from getting to games during the daylight hours.

Ideally, I'd like to try and get him to that lvl 13 so I can get his Fighter to 11 for the third attack slot and thus four attacks on the haste.

So I have a Level 12 Alchemist, but to tell you the truth I was hoping to run the Eyes of the Ten at ChimaeraCon in April 2013 in San Antonio for the San Antonio/Austin Players and some Dallas/Houston players.

Will you be able to Fit both Eyes of the Ten and the Special at OwlCon?

Silver Crusade 3/5

<< at the rate i'm going, Rassiel (Magus) will be 12th level by the time Owl Con rolls around.

Being able to fit both will honestly depend on the number of GMs we have. I've seen a lot of new people stepping up to GM around Houston in the last year, so I doubt that will be a problem.

Would Chimeracon be more convenient for players than Owlcon? I want what's best for everyone here.

I've got a Summoner who is 5 XP away from 12 (4 if my table at Animefest makes tomorrow and we don't all die horribly).

I'm going to be honest in that I have no intention of going to ChimaeraCon again this year, though, and would prefer OwlCon for this. Both times I've been the staff running the convention itself were unorganized and dealing with them was continually frustrating. Not worth driving an hour and a half for.

So I am assuming you are talking about the Staff at ChimaeraCon and not the PFS organizers at ChimaeraCon, which I know you know is me.

I can't say much for the Staff, but I can say they now play hands off with us and have nothing to do with PFS other then giving us all the table we need.

I know you were there in 2011 and the place it was at was Garbage, they move and they have a much better location now.

Last year it went really well and the ChimaeraCon staff had zero impact on PFS other then giving us more table when I requested it. I woould say last year other then the fact the scheduled it during Easter * Who does that?* went really well and it showed that there was a lot of room for growth for PFS at ChimaeraCon , in fact they are giving me double the tables this year (Same amount as the last OwlCon).

I can't know what your problem with the staff at ChimaeraCon is, but I can tell you it won't impact PFS there.

Of course not. If I had an issue with you or the people helping you, I'd have come to you directly. Like I said, "with the convention itself". PFS at ChimaeraCon has been fun both 2011/2012; I'm just not happy with the Con itself or the people who coordinate it.

The Exact Specifics of My Grievances (TL;DR):
My issues with ChimaeraCon's staff generally run along the lines of being a mess, not really thinking through some of their venue choices, and not having anything about the Con beyond PFS that makes me want to go.

The registration table never being open on time, being staffed by 12-14 year olds that I assume are the coordinators' children, and taking 20-30 minutes to get my badge sorted out both years because they had nothing ready and no one knowing the system in place...despite never having a line more than 4-5 people deep, etc. This may sound trivial, but when you're driving down to play and you pre-registered precisely to avoid having to spend 30 minutes sorting out a badge...it's frustrating.

Both locations (2011 & 2012) have also banned any and all outside food and drink while offering very little in terms of options (usually cash only). Last year I had to pay a pretty hefty fee for parking at their new location, to boot. This isn't abnormal for hotels/conventions, but the location (right in the middle of downtown) makes it hard to seek alternatives and not staying at the hotel means no validation (and I'm not getting a hotel room for a con that only just about an hour's drive away). The non-PFS con offerings (vendor room, other events) haven't impressed me much either year. That makes for a lot of money just to play PFS.

I have a job where when I don't work, I don't make money. And that peaks on weekends. Simple as that. So if I'm going to ask off for a weekend day (or the whole weekend), I'm not going to go sink money into a con that leaves me frustrated and unimpressed. I can only afford to go to 2-3 Cons a year and I'm fairly certain one of those is going to be PaizoCon in 2013. So again, not going to sink money into a Con I don't like when I could set it aside for one I do.

Kelly asked for preferences and I gave him mine: OwlCon.

That is some crappy stuff, I just experienced the parking fee, I had no problems with my pass. Also I don't remember any restrictions on food, in fact I brought in outside food a few times during the con.

On other games, since all I ever go to local cons for is PFS I did not notice.

I know they are once again having a new location again this year I will get back to you on the parking fees for the new place.

Edit: on parking fees I know I spent about the same at owlcon

The Exchange 4/5

If I can get the games I'll happily try to get to either ChimeraCON or OwlCON to play. OwlCON being in Houston (where I am) would be preferable, but I can try to plan for other CONs as well.

Are these the only major CONs in Texas that have PFS play?

We do have a local event organizer who has been tracking the local player base progression in preparation for running Eyes of the Ten here in DFW. It looks like he'll have enough players before year end.

I have two characters who will be level 10 this month and at least one of them will be level 12 before year end.

Awesome, I'm looking forward to getting out to Austin and the other big events for some games.

Grand Lodge 4/5

I updated the con list for DFW.

I removed NTRPGCON as it's pretty much an old school con. I may run intro scenarios or Free RPG Day modules, but that's about it. The con organizers are great guys, but they don't want to take the focus off of BECMI/1E/2E, so they don't really want a full raft of PFS events and I can support that. It's also right after A-Kon and running two full events back-to-back like that would kill me.

I also added AnimeFest, which wasn't included previously.

The information for Austin Comic Con says November, yet the website says the end of October.

I just saw a notice for a CON in Austin, Tx called ChupacabraCON on the RPG.net forums, their facebook is looking for people to host and run games in October.

Thank you! I've sent off the email to Dave and included the other Venture Cpts and Lts in Texas as well.

I have a Bard 11, 1 step into slow progression to 12. I would be interested in playing EOT if she hits 12 in time.

Grand Lodge 4/5

Just an update. At this time, it is looking like Eyes of the Ten will be saved for Chimeracon, as I can't get it on the Owlcon schedule without massive conflicts with Race for the Runecarved Key.

Or another Convention if it is more convenient for the mass majority of High Level PCs.
