Your Favorite "Other" RPG and what you might want for it

Other RPGs

The Quantum RPG, I really love what we have seen of the setting for it, and while I still haven't had chance to digest the rules, they look interesting.

I really want to see the content of the Akyema city Akyema city kickstarter.

GURPS is one of my favourites, and generally underrated around the internet. Of course, I also play 3.5e (and when I can, a houseruled version called Tome which is full of win) as well as the occasional 4e game when a good DM gets a great idea.

Minimus - entire game fits on four pages, including a sample setting.

D6 Dramatics - what I'm tinkering with for licenses.

I loved the layout of GURPS 3e. GURPS 4e, I love what they did to clean up most of the system. I hate the layout with a passion.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I run three Pathfinder campaigns and play in one more, so...Pathfinder.

But as for my "other" PC, it's Amber. Love it.

Ars Magica. :)

I need me a new Tribunal book on Rome, and I'd really like a new one on Novgorod.

We could do one on the New World (Ars Cahokia), and probably one going to India. I wouldn't mind an adventure path covering a potentially 20 year conflict with a big bad guy, I think that is something Ars is missing.

Didn't see it yet on this thread but Dogs in the Vinyard has a really interesting rules set. It's one of the best RPGs i've seen at forcing players to own the game instead of deferring to GM to drive an adventure. Not for the rookie gamer, though!

Old School Hack, to the extent that it now occupies a special place among all of my other D&D-related games (including 3.5, 4e and a number of retro-clones) that at the moment I'd rather run it all the time instead of any other version of D&D. What I want is for the author to finish the damn game, because even though we're not even close to reaching the end of the Basic Game, I want more stuff to play with for it.

Other than that, Unknown Armies takes the cake. The system's a bit clunky, but I absolutely love the insanity tracks and weird Americana of it.

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2013 Top 16

For rules, non-d20, I love GURPS and Savage Worlds. Very different approaches.

GURPS/HERO System, Call of Cthulhu/BRP are my top two to actually GM and play.

KenzerCo's "HackMaster 4th Edition" (licensed version, not the current version) was also a blast.

Villains and Vigilantes (along with most of that company's various games), Palladium (various incarnations since the 1st BTS), early Traveller ... also lots of fun.

I don't have an alternate system. I'd get one, but I don't know who I would play it with.

Shadow Lodge

Really? Most gamers I've played with have at the very least been willing to give "new" systems a try. In fact, I think it's good to throw in a completely different system from time to time just to fight "system fatigue".

Couldn't even interest them in board games. D&D or nothing.

If you come to GenCon, there are tons of options!

Favoured alternatives (when available) to Pathfinder/my "pathfinderised" FR games:

D&D 3.5 (with a good dose of sourcebooks and settings from earlier editions)

Call of Cthulhu

Star Wars Saga Edition

Hero System (Fantasy)

Ars Magica

old World of Darkness (granted, I couldn't be bothered to buy the new WoD rules because we had no current campaigns going on, so maybe nWoD too/instead)

For most of the above, there are no current campaigns unfortunately. :(

... oh, yeah, I'm in a 4e game too. Not my cup of tea system-wise, but certainly bearable so far from a player's perspective. (And with some good friends.)

From the games I have played, Big Eyes Small Mouth and Serenity (Now Cortex system I think).

From what I have, and never played BESM 3rd Ed.

I've yet to actually have a chance to play Savage Worlds, but aside for a few rules-related hitches (like the fact that a d4 is at times superior to a d6 because of the exploding dice) it seems like it would be a blast to play. I'm considering hacking it so I may run it with Uresia: The Grave of Heaven.

I forgot the other half of the thread topic:

What I would want for the 'other' systems.

Simple: full-on adventures and preferably CAMPAIGNS.

GURPS 4th/HERO: modern horror, 'Carrion Crown' meets point buy and high-lethality combat. Not for the wuss of heart. 'Serpents Fang' converted to Pulp-style: Indiana Jones meets sword n sorcery in the heart of Darkest Africa.

RIFTS: An honest-to-goodness campaign or several. The one great weakness of Palladium in general has been in not showing how they envision XP being awarded. They could easily do several: "Vampire Extermination", "Into Atlantis" [HIGH END campaign], "RIFT Diving" [travel across the Megaverse chasing a MacGuffin to thwart the Sploogies or whatever - leads up to "Into Atlantis"], "Death on the Oregon Trail", "Red River Rampage" ... the list is long and rife with possibilities.

PFRPG is my other game. I enjoy it, and it's completely replaced 3/3.5 in that capacity, but my gaming home is still White Wolf. (O)WoD, and nearly every contemporary storyteller system game, I've used to all together for games, one of which ran for over five years.

As for support, I allready own an entire long bookcase shelf of books for it, I don't think I need much more. Despite that, I'm in the process of developing my own systems for it now, one of which I've had printed into a book for my own use.

As to other "other games", I was big into 3/3.5 specifically the Forgotten Realms and Eberron settings, I dabbled with In Nominae and found it fun, but difficult to get people into, I'd also played the West End Swrpg, the old L5R system, and the Elric system. I don't miss any of them much.

Dungeon World is my newest love. It does everything I want out of D&D in new and exciting ways without a lot of the mechanical baggage. When I got Uresia: The Grave of Heaven, my first instinct was to run it using Savage World. Now I'm seriously considering hacking Dungeon World so I can run it in Uresia. All I'd have to do is come up with racial moves for slimes, satyrs and beastmen.

Star Wars SAGA edition!!!!!! What I want from it - please come back! I dont care for the new version and the old was just so awesome. If I could go back in time for a wish list it would be for Adventure Paths!

For superhero gaming I love the old Mayfair DC Heroes. It was the game I first played and hooked me on gaming. Wow... Im such a grognard.

Shadowrun is fun but the rules can be a bit overwhelming and stacks of dice feel clumsy. I love the setting though. If only there was a D20 version that was up to date on D20 mechanics beyond D20 Future.

Ars Magica, best RPG in existence. Not for everyone, and pretty much requires an M.A. in Medieval Studies to run it properly but boy oh boy does it go if everyone takes the game a little seriously.

Obviously, D&D is my beer and pretzels game ;-)

Silver Crusade

I am really curious to give Mouseguard a go, I bought the graphic novels on Comixology and I am IN LOVE with that world.

In other news I have played Fiasco (Saturday Night '79 playset) and I love it.

Traveller, Megetraveller for science fiction. The new Traveller 5 rules will be out soon. Third Imperium here I come. For anime / big robots Mekton Zeta. Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0 for well, cyberpunk. My PF game (3.x/PF/homebrew really) for fantasy. And any version of D&D pre 4E is OK. DDN is looking promising btw. Old games that I haven't played / contemplated in an age... the old FASA Star Trek RPG, Bushido, and any game set in Tekumel, from the original Empire of the Petal Throne rules all the way up to the tri-stat based Tekumel: Empire of the Petal Throne. A solid OGL Tekumel game would be oh so nice. People have tinkered with it but no product out yet (except for a very incomplete play test set).

Too many games to play in my limited time. I'll have to settle for running PF and playtesting / running DDN

L5R and Savage Worlds are likely my favorite non-D&D/PF games. Just tried out Dungeon World recently, and enjoyed it immensely.

I've played and GM/DM/Ref'd a lot over the years. Here is a partial list Staats RPG Library.

My favorite nonD20 game is probably Chaosium's BRP/CoC/RQ. It is simple and allows for playing in a variety of settings. I can take someone from non-gamer to player in less than 20 minutes.

Basic Traveller was good on the Sci Fi side. Mega-traveller, Traveller 2,300, etc. added complexity, and Marc brought basic some of the simplicity in T4.

I loved the Fantasy Game Unlimited (FGU) games, because they covered the range of RPGs from pirate games to light, modern combat

The Warhammer FRP is fun too. 3rd Ed. adds new dice and mechanics; it has been a tough run finding folks to play though.

When I was gaming our standby was D&D (started with 2E, moved up to 3E). We interspersed that with (in no particular order):

* Star Wars (West End Games version)
* Warhammer Fantasy
* Deadlands (original rules)
* Babylon 5 D20
* Judge Dredd D20
* Robotech

I also got a few RPGs we never got round to playing, but would go through the books anyway for inspiration: the main example of that is Alternity, which I still regret we never played (especially in light of the dedicated thread on this board). We also did Call of Cthulu for a few sessions, which I quite liked, but we never completed a campaign.

My favourite 'other' RPG is probably Deadlands, simply because of the very bonkers campaign we did over one summer that seemed to escalate in the amount of preposterous mayhem the players could unlease in each successive campaign. Entirely lacking in subtlety, but fun.

My non-fantasy favorites are

*White Wolf's Scion
*Alderac's 7th Sea, -before- they tried to jump on the d20 bandwagon
*TOON, a game that everyone loves to play and nobody wants to run.

I really want to like Scion. Too bad WW didn't give it more time (sometimes it feels like they kinda abandoned it halfway through development).

Johnico wrote:

Besides Pathfinder, my three favorite systems are Star Wars Saga Edition, Warhammer Fantasy 2nd Edition, and Anima: Beyond Fantasy.

The first two are dead/out of print, but they had very respectable levels of support while they were still alive. I can't think of anything off-hand for either one that I really want that wasn't released.

The last one is still around, but support is slow. The game's been around for about 3-4 years here in America (the game was originally published in Spain), and only 5 supplements (GM Screen, Setting Book, Ki Book, Monster Book, and Magic Book) have been released here. There are about 4 others out in Spain that have yet to be released. Based on the title of one of them (Prometheum Exxet) they're going to release the Psychic Book that I've been wanting. The only other things I can think I really want is the second volume of the Setting Book (the one out now only covers the Eastern (Old) Continent, not the Western (New) one), and maybe a full campaign/more adventures. So far, the only published adventure was the one packaged with the GM Screen. Really fun system if you're looking for a blend of Eastern and Western fantasy concepts in a fairly high-power setting.

I'm spanish, and to me is kind of funny that problem with Anima; we always have the same problem with english/american or japanise things. Part of my moderate English skills come from the need to buy material on the original idiom. Seems really strange someone with the other side of the problem.

Apart from Pathfinder, my party plays Legend of 5 Rings (excellent 4 Ed), Exalted (waiting for 3 Edition), World of Darkness (both New and Old, but more Old) and Warhammer 40.000. Waiting to see Star Wars done by Fantasy Flight.

On of my all time favorite games is ROLEMASTER! I know, its table heavy. Luckily, I have spent the last 20 years in it and have most everything memorized... my players still find it the most detailed game they play. :D The critical charts are top notch, the detail is above most other game systems and the open-endednesss of the game mechanics lends itself to fantastical circumstances when that "Natural 100" is rolled!!! I just don't see that in D20 style games. I have always heard, "you want speed, D02. You want detail, Rolemaster."
I have really come to love Pathfinder for its speed in both character generation and speed of combat... I just never get that fantastic, "OMG!!! I killed a 10th level fighter with my 1st level Sorcerer" feeling. Please don't flame however, I love BOTH systems!

I would like to ask if Paizo if you would put in Rolemaster stats on your adventures? I would LOVE to see this and would purchase more of your adventures if they had them in there.

I play with several different groups at the moment and have about 20+ Rolemaster converts around me here in Nashville TN. I would really like to see adventures where those stats were present. Would make my life as a GM much more fun!!! :)

Thanks!!!
Dreven

ALternity had an awesome setting, but the rules imo could have been better. I felt the same way with shadowrun, but will be checking out 5e.

Deadlands was one of my favorite setting and I liked the rules. My favorite was probably Exalted 1e. I loved the setting and how the rules help show how AWESOME, the character's were. I didn't know about 3e unitl reading this thread. I also enjoyed, OWoD, Abberant, and Toon.

What I will like from Exalted, is short adventures, that could finnished in one night

Hiya.

Why not..

My faves...

Powers & Perils ( www.powersandperils.org if you want the rules). An old Avalon Hill rpg. So many cool things and a unique "classical fantasy swords & sorcery" feel to it. Skills increase seperately as you use them. Spells, same thing. Opposed combat resolution. Just lots of good, meaty stuff!

Call of Cthulhu. System is simple, setting is awesome, and I've *never* had a 'bad game' playing it. Ever. And their SAN rules? Perfect.

Gamma World 3rd Edition. Yes, the one with the 'colored chart' resolution method. It definitely could have used another couple rounds through the editor, but, as a heavily seasoned RPG vet, I have no problem GM'ing this game. Creation is half the fun, after all! ;)

Marvel Super Heroes Advanced Set (MSHA). The old "FASERIP" system. Pure, unabashed, mighty marvel mayhem! It can handle street-level vigilantes, to cosmic-power-wielding entities.

Hackmaster 4th Edition (e.g., the first edition). Based on 1e/2e AD&D with *heavy* modifications and copious amounts of add-ons...this is just one fun-as-hell fantasy game systems. It's built akin to 1e/2e. In other words, it's very modular. If you don't like something, don't use it...the system will run just fine. Just about every session I've ever DM'ed has had at least one memorable event or incident that we still remember years later.

Star Frontiers. ( you can get it all , free, and legal, at: www.starfrontiersman.com ...just look on the left under "Releases" --> "Digitally Remastered" ). For space games...this is my go-to system. Like all old TSR games, this puppy is infinitely mutable. You can run world-based special-forces combat campaigns, world-hopping mercantile campaigns, epic space battle campaigns, and anything else you can think of. All easy to add your own special rules to give the campaign your own feel.

^_^
