Charging with a lance

Rules Questions

so i have a character and i'm having trouble calculating the damage. he is lvl 4/2 fighter/cavilier, 16str 1d6+4 with a +1 lance. I do have spirited charge so my normal damage is 3d6+12. If i power attack would the damage be 3d6+24?

YEP.

ALSO, BARBARIAN GIVE HEARTFELT CONGRATULATIONS ON SELECTING BEST WEAPON TYPE FOR CHARACTER. BARBARIAN MOVED TO MANLY TEARS.

ok, the only problem i see is that my mount has very low HP. i might take more lvl's in cavilier to get his hp up. so on a crit would it be 5d6+20 and power attack would be 5d6+40?

MOUNTED COMBAT AM ALSO GOOD FEET IF NOT ALREADY GOTTEN. ENEMY AM ALL LIKE 'ATTACK MOUNT' AND MOUNT AM ALL LIKE 'EEP' AND THEN RIDER AM ALL LIKE 'NUH UH RIDE CHECK' AND ATTACK AM ALL LIKE 'MISS' AND ENEMY AM ALL LIKE 'WHAT AM EVEN DOING WITH LIFE?!' AND THEN DIE BECAUSE LANCE TO FACE.

ALSO RIDE-BY-ATTACK AM MAKING KINDA DIFFICULT FOR ENEMY TO GET MORE THAN ONE ATTACK. SO AM PRETTY ACCURATE SUMMARY, ACCORDING TO BARBARIAN.

I can see doging an attack with my ride skill. but what if that attack was with and area effect like a fire ball or breath weapon? would a ride skill check replace the the reflex save for the mount, or would i have to make a reflex save, or 1 reflex save for me and my mount?

MOUNT AND FIGHTY GUY BOTH MAKE SAVES. PROBABLY WANT AT LEAST CAVALIER 3 FOR EVASION ON MOUNT. ALTERNATIVELY, LANCE THING THAT FIREBALL PRIOR TO GETTING FIREBALLED. THAT ALSO WORK.

It's definitely worth taking four levels in cavalier so you can qualify for Horse Master. Afterwards you can focus on fighter if you like, and your mount will scale up to your total level instead of your cavalier levels.

that is a good idea AM BARBARIAN, and Aratok. the only problem is that in Pathfinder Society cavalier's get Skill Focus on ride or handle animal (i forgot) instead of Expert Trainer. that means i cant get horse master feat.

Horse Master is delicious cheese, and allowed at our table! (Unless you are a Beast Rider--I think that's the only archetype that gives up horse master, but I didn't look at all of them that closely).

It looks like he's 2 levels short of being able to take Horse Master though, unless I'm misreading it. He'll need at least 4 levels of cavalier.

Don't lances do more than just 1d6 base damage?

Small lances do 1d6, medium lances do 1d8. Small sized mounted characters are very popular because their medium sized mounts fit inside buildings and dungeons.

Ya im a halfling. I forgot to say that. Then the question is should do 4lvls of cavalier and then fighter or mix them up?

Im thinking
Lvl1 cavalier
Lvl2 fighter
Lvl3-5 cavalier
Then lvl6-20 fighter.

Not a bad spread. You're only behind on your mount for 3 levels, and you can take Horse Master at level 6 with your fighter level 2 bonus feat.

Barbarian's answers are some of the best I've ever seen, both in answering the question and in the way of answering.

Sorry to reviving an old thread, but I was wondering about the damage calculation of OP's power attack.
3d6 + 24 => the 24 is 3(STR) + 1(+1 weapon) + 4(power atk)

Wouldn't it be
3d6 + 30? => Since the power attack for lance (regardless of using 1 or 2 hands, according to paizo's FAQ) adds +50% bonus; it should be 6 damage instead of 4.

So 3 + 1 + 6 = 10, then x3 = 30.

I'm totally lost on calculating Crit dmg however. :(

They killed that FAQ and replaced it with the universal "it's treated as however you're wielding it" FAQ, so no two-handed lance damage unless you're actually two-handing it.

Crit damage would multiply the static modifiers plus the base weapon die, and 3x + 3x = 5x in PF math, so:

Base damage including PA - 1d6 + 8

Spirited Charge + PA - 3d6 + 24

Spirited Charge + PA + Crit - 5d6 + 40

I wasn't aware of this. Where is all this broken mounted power gaming that Paizo seeks to destroy?

Its a martial thing? Also, think of the dual wielding pouncing and mounted barbarian. Just seeing one of those would leave you feeling something is in need of some adjusting ;P

Doesn't look like they've killed it.

That^, and it's still in the d20pfsrd.

Completely irrelevant. Paizo doesn't maintain the d20pfsrd and it can take time for changes to trickle over to them, especially ones for things like a FAQ being removed or amended.

That being said, it does look like the FAQ is back in place (I'm certain that it was taken down for a while... maybe I'm crazy), so it looks like you do get your -1/+3 spread, at least for the time being.

Good enough for me. Thanks. :)
