Suli Sorcerer.

Advice

Grand Lodge

In an upcoming Legacy of Fire campaign, I have a fellow PC interested in playing a Suli Sorcerer with the Marid Bloodline, keeping well in tune with the flavor of the campaign.

He usually plays Dwarf fighters, and really has no experience with spellcasting.
I have no experience with Pathfinder Sorcerers.

We are 15 point buy, and all Pathfinder and the 3.5 Sandstorm book is allowed.

So, does any one have any advice for me and my lost friend?

Grand Lodge

At levels 1 and 2 try to have a balance of spells available between blast and utility with a focus on blast... thats what sorcerers are better at. Colour spray is a good one for instance. Your friend gets VERY few spells known so make sure everyone knows what the other characters are so it can be a better fit. Have him listen to fellow players for suggestions there.

Unlike Wizards, which have a wide range of spells to choose from, your friend is going to struggle if he tries to use the same 2 spells for everything, so build to be useful at a few other things if possible... Depending on whether this is a 15pt or 20pt game, it can be said that dump stats are NOT your friend.

Dumping to 8 Int and getting only one skill per level is gonna hurt. Dumping to 8 str and having the racial bonus take the character to 10 is sort of an option, though a bit of a weak sauce one if the character plans on any sort of melee at all (not a good option for casters but sometimes you can't help it). Crossbows are likely gonna be your friends fall back weapon.

Featwise? Toughness doesn't hurt at all but there are sorcerer guides out there that nail down whats hot and whats not.

Thematically, the character will be a lot of fun once you get past level 3 because the characters tool kit will be wide enough to deal with more than one sort of challenge.

Grand Lodge

I know he is looking for a "out of melee" PC, so dumping strength is not a problem.

Being blasty, with some utility seems to be where he wants to go.

What traits/feats best help achieve this?

If it helps, there will be lot's of fire subtype enemies ahead.

Grand Lodge

You don't get a lot of feats when you think about it... Its one.

It depends what you want - I suggest you search for Guide to Sorcerers on the forums for more.

Traits? Its a tricky one - I suggest ones that open more skill options.

As for campaign traits? You CANNOT beat 'Finding Nareem' - its a Free Skill point AND free Hitpoint every level he sticks with sorcerer.

Grand Lodge

Cool.
Is the Tattooed Sorcerer a good archetype for this build?

Grand Lodge

How about this for a stat array?

9 str
12 dex
12 con
10 int
10 wis
19 cha

Grand Lodge

Nothing?

I'm not sue if Suli is the right choice mate?

I had great fun with a Efreeti bloodlined human sorcerer. If I was going to have another go I'd try an Ifrit (ARG) Fire bloodlined sorcerer.

Varisian tattoo is really good, I recommend that especially as the new Paths of Prestige book has a class devoted to it!

Grand Lodge

He is set on the Bloodline, and wishes to play a Genie blooded race.

Suli has a charisma bonus.

You know of something else?

I would go.

9 Str
12 Dex
12 Con
10 Int
8 Wis
20 Cha

Dark Archive

I wouldn't necessarily go with blasting, although it seems like a natural choice.

Spell casters ultimately are best when they can control the battle or buff an ally. Having 1 or 2 blasting spells is fine, but powerful support spells are better.

Haste
Displacement
Resist/Protect from Energy
Stoneskin
Enlarge Person
Bull's STR/the entire line of spells
Summon Monsters
Glitterdust
Invisibility
Web
Protection from Evil
Stinking Cloud
Sleet Storm
Create Pit
Silent Image/Minor Image/entire line of spells
Wall of ???

If a person is going to dump STR, might as well dump to 7 and get the 4 build points.

Grand Lodge

Sorry, I statted post racial modifiers, which are +2 Str, -2 Int, +2 Cha.

Ahhh. I didnt have access to the stat adjust.

In that case It would be either...

9 Str
12 Dex
12 Con
8 Int
8 Wis
20 Cha

Or if he doesnt want to dump that much...

9 Str
12 Dex
14 Con
10 Int
10 Wis
18 Cha

Grand Lodge

Cool. He doesn't mind dumping too much.

What are some choice feats/traits for this build?

Suli has a charisma bonus.

Ifrit gives you +2 CHA and +2 DEX. It also gives you Darkvision. I think this is superior to Suli for a Sorcerer.

There's also some really nice alternative racial traits like swapping fire resist for a +4 initiative bonus.

Grand Lodge

Hmm, a race switch is heavy. I will mention it though.

What about Rime Spell? With the ability of the Marid bloodline to turn any elemental spell into a cold spell, I figure it could be strong.

Yeah, but they are fighting a lot of fire enemies. Always listen to your DM. :)

I think suli is a fine (if not necessarily the best) option for a sorcerer, and better than the other genie race that could work with this bloodline (undine) due to the stat boosts. Gotta think for a few minutes before I decide what feats would really help you out.

Ah I didn't read that! Well spotted.

Grand Lodge

Magical Lineage seems like a choice trait, but I am unsure about the spell to choose.

Grand Lodge

What is a good first level choice feat?
