Good idea. My only issue is I seldom carry around mines and traps because they weigh me down and I don't remember to use them when I should. (Also mine placement is really wonky).

(Note my priorities for what is worth what weight is a bit silly. I will sacrifice a mini-nuke because I NEED that lab coat if something happens where I need to look sciencey.)

Although I really now want to do that in particular all around the Crater near the lighthouse.

I had an interesting situation in Survival involving the Forged and the Gunners nearby. I was worried about taking on the Forged (I remembered that the final encounter didn't have much cover and was difficult when not on survival), so instead I took out the nearby Gunners. I decided to go back and wipe out the Forged and, lo and behold, the Gunners were all back (even though other areas I had cleared at about the same time remained empty). I'm not sure if the game was set up to respawn the Gunners more quickly if the Forged remained active or something else happened (maybe that Gunner nest just respawns quickly).

I finally wiped out the Forged and then the Gunners right afterwards. I should check and see if either of them came back next time I fire up the game.

I know the respawn rate on normal mode is lightning fast, so it could be that it does respawn more often still... but that would be interesting to see. Let us know what happens.


Cryo mine was really handy in the final fight with the Forged. The guy doesn't seem to mind if you wander around dropping mines while he's talking.

Working my way through the city had to take shelter in a parking lot to avoid snipers.

Met a Drifter, tells me "You can sleep here with the raties"

This is why I gave up on playing survival "properly" and modded it so I could save whenever. It took me one loss of massive progress due to a CTD (I think I was even looking for a bed and just hadn't been able to find one... they are weirdly ubiquitous some places and then nonexistent elsewhere where they shouldn't be... e.g., random converted factory has mattresses in it, bunch of old houses don't... I guess the raiders raided the houses and took them to the factory) for me to go "well, screw vanilla survival mode." I was willing to try it as designed--I'm okay if I die in combat and I'd failed to save before, but if the meta-game itself is working against me that's different. I try to save as infrequently as reasonable but I don't regret modding.


So far my 1 or 2 endurance pistol user is doing ok. I occasionally resort to my automatic pipe rifle but generally try to stick to my pistols.

A good pistoleer build + many AP + the unique pistol the Railroad gives you = broken levels of hurt on badguys.

As discussed upthread, ADA's enemy perception is too good for her own good. I think it's something about the Assaultron head, as I had the same problem with Curie when I gave her an assaultron head. Codsworth/Mr. Handy head is a little less inclined to dive into battle.

nice place, except some fellow named Rory thought "Lets breed Murklurkers"

Luckily Murklerkers fall prey ti mines very easily.

Computer says he has a trunk of stuff under the boat in their nest....yeah lets save that for later.

Oh my this is a great place to loot. Lots of goodies 16 bags of cement, ammo, food, junk galor.

Yeah forget the trunk for now back to settlement

Soon as we leave the place I see raiders closing in. I let ADA engage and I run for it. If she gets busted I'll just find her at the red rocket.

I'm almost back at the nearest settlment when I hear it. A huge roar and the ground shakes. Turning around to see what it was would just waste valuable time that could be spent running away.

and so I sprint for the settlement Deathclaw right behind me.

I am really really glad it didn't actually chase me

ADA catches up and I get some sleep


Ok...so there is a Deathclaw out there.

I go to take a look and yep...there he is.

and he's hurt, hurt bad

Bad enough that I manage to kill him and walk away with a broken arm.
Look around tells me why he was hurt. Half dozen dead raiders, probably the ones that chansed me out of the shipyard.

Nice, Loot and another nap.

Time to take the 16 bags of cement to the Boat house, where I was in the middle of building something.

I was feeling pretty over confident aftter that Deathclaw.

Got myself killed by Roaches and flies

Gonna be doing a lot of dying for a while I think.

Current plan is retake the Castle forthe minutemen. So me and ADA made our way over there. Managed to get to diamond city along the way which is nice.

Initial assault on the Castle works well. I lay down a mine field, and the minutemen wait for me to pull lurkers. That part works nicely.

but as you can imagine the queen is taking a little more effort.

doesn't help that one of Preston's dumbasses descides to poke her while I'm in the kitchen dealing with eggs.

This job is gonna take some time


managed to find a rooftop settlement right next to where I met Preston and his people for retaking the Castle. Not much but at least there is a matress

Starting to think taking the castle would be easier if I did it alone, but Survival mode is quick to point out that I die in 2 hits even if wearing Power armor

Just wish the dumb ass would not pull the Queen while I'm in the kitchen cooking Eggs


Maybe you could mine the hell out of the courtyard before starting the mission?

That's generally how I've done it in the past but I'm finding in survival mode 1 dose of Queen Venom Spew is pretty much death, even if she is baddly hurt

Jump off the wall and just run

Greenie being a dumb mob pursues using the stairs where he happens to run into ADA and some of the the minute men. Other minutemen are drawn by the fighting

Meanwhile I'm on the far side of the courtyard with a sniper rifle shooting Greenie in the legs. Always in the legs, again and again and again.

Soon enough ADA is down and the minute men are all screaming for stim packs and Greenie is limping his mutated legendary shell towards me. Legs are done so I sniper the arms. When he finally gets to me it just takes two shotgun blasts to the head to put him out of his misery

Well trying to clean up the old fort, as well as open a path for settlers to get to it.

progress is slow on account of dying a lot

Found a bunch of concrete in the basement as well as a lot of Fragmines.

and something that powered up and said scary things about eliminating intruders....ran away from that.

Tried clearing out the Brewery...didn't go well. Legendary Supermutant think my power armor is made of tinfoil and then proceeds to prouve it.

Killed their guys outside though.

Guy tries to sell me a Credit Card....seriously post apocalyptic wilderness and I still have to deal with telemarketers.

Tried clearing out some Raiders but guess what. Legendary Raider not impressed by Power Armor.

Best Find though

Besement of a Church 3 feral Ghouls have built a Shrine to a Cat. They have an Alter, a big painting of a Cat, offerings of Dog Meat.

I help them repair the place and added a turret.

Then the gunners start shooting the cattle again....damn gunners.

ADA holds it and the other gunners off while I crank my musket. 4 Cranks is pretty bad ass, Assaultron goes down

So the last few days I have been running around building Cannons at different settlements. Also got Zamunji and Greygarden into the fold.

Everything is looking good.
time to head back to the Fort. It's slow going, picking my way through the city, looting a couple of places along the way.

Added bonus. Christmas Steam card has gained me Far Harbor DLC. So new Crafting options suddenly available like Caltrops and Barns.

ADA starts shooting at some Raiders...she is always quick on the gun. That's fine I take a few pot shots from around the corner

Suddenly Bear.

Huge Bear, biggest I've seen in the game yet

chrages right past me into the raiders and ADA.

I rethink my position and fall back, leaving a mine behind me.

Shooting Stops
Bear comes round the corner, sets off the mine, keeps chargeing, I shoot the musket, keeps coming

Had it not been for the mysterious stranger I'd be bear food.

Better repair ADA and and collect some bear meat

I was lucky enough to get a kneecapper pipe revolver so anytime I see big scary monsters I just blast them with that until they start crawling towards me and I can calmly blast them with my better weaponry. It’s what saved me in the museum of witchcraft.


The hardest part so far is getting used to the PlayStation 4 controller, definitely not the same as the Xbox 360.


Welp helped Travis the radio DJ get lucky. Then had to save the owner of the Inn. Good thing I'd already killed everybody in that place.

Probably about time I go save Nick.

As I wander the city I see a nice fat glowing green Rad Stag. yum Meat is on the menu. Bam...huh...not dead....not running away...oh god It's charging

Found an old Bunker today, Had the last survivor of a BoS patrol. I'd found some of them before but they were all dead. Tried to talk to the guy but ....he wasn't gonna listen. ADA put him down.

Guy had a lot of stuff hough plus Bed o sleep on.

Headed out after a good sleep, quick chat with some Minutemen patroling the area.

Rust Devils with a Sentry bot nearly got me. Getting real sick of those guys but now I got a Kneecapper Plasma gun.....Decided to hit the bunker again and sleep till morning.

Passed a waste dispossal site. Way too many rads to explore though

Approaching the Slog when I hear ADA shooting.....almost don't want to look

Stingwings, lots of them swarming all over her. Start picking them off at a distance with the musket

"Sunshine Co-Op needs Defending"

That is on the whole other side of the map......only 3 people there......god damn it why do I have to do everything here

Start hoofing it back west

Only we missed two stingwings who hit us from behind
Poison finishes me off

So I wake up in my bunker thinking "Sunshine Co-op might get attacked today...also Stingwings suck"

I'm halfway there when I get the notice

Sure enough Killer robots have the 3 settlers pinned down. Me and ADA make quick work of them and then we do a bit of construction.

There is an added bonus though. Eyebot scout has located a mini nuke for me and it's right next door to the co-op.

Bunch of Dead Raiders later and I have a me a nuke and a lot of other junk. Spend some time at a workshop and Tadaa

Quad Barrel Scopped Missile Launcher

Quick run around to various settlements to do some population management and then it's off to rescue Nike Valentine.

Which brings us to now
I am hiding in a bookstore

outside Ghouls, Raiders and Supermutants are (hopefully) killing each other

You see the thing about a Quad missile launcher is while it is a very fun weapon. It is also loud...so very loud

and for some reason people want to see what caused all the BOOMS

wish i had more ammo for it.
and while I am carrying a Mini Nuke...I seem to have forgotten to bring a Fatman

Need time to think my way out of this one while remember that my last save....was....a long time ago.....crap....it's the bunker isn't it


Hurt bad, vision blurry, moving slow...

Supermutants won the big brawl but turns out they remembered I was around.

Neon sigh offers sanctuary..."GOODNEIGHBORE"

No time for jerk trying to shake me down at the door he gets the Shotgun to the head. Locals applaud.

Get the power armor repaired sell some junk and then hotel, sleep and comfort.

When I get up I run into a surprise. The Vault Tec guy who got me Frozen in the first place. He seems a bit pissed but I manage to talk him down and send him to Sanctuary

Now to Save Nike

Me and ADA are loaded to the limit
I am slugging back Wiskey and Burbon and Cola just to keep walking
I've run out of food and I've run out of water

by the time I reach Diamond City I am dead on my feet and I just drank the last of the Vodka. I'm also a full on Alcholoic now...on top of the Insomnia and Paracites

I stumble into the Dugout inn and sleep for 10 hours

Interesting note: If you rent a room and put stuff in a container in that room it counts as stealing when you take it back. Good thing the door was closed

Sell a bunch of armor and weapons. Mod up a combat shotgun, name it Betty

Talk to Nike
Search Kellog's house

Before I send Dogmeat on a run though I need to sort out my current supply situation.

Me and ADA storm Hangman's Alley. Kill em all then unload ADA's junk into the workbench.

Now gonna get some rest and follow Dogmeat in the morning

You got the doctor in Diamond City to cure your insomnia and parasites, right? I think it's only 15 caps, cheaper than buying antibiotics.

If you can build stores, assign Vault Tec dude to a general trading post.

I think it ran me 75 caps to clean out my system. I'll remember about the stores


Ok time to hunt down Kellog. Go get im Dogmeat.

Been through this before so I think I'm ready for it.

... At stop point 1 we are ambushed by Rust Devils and nearly killed.

Molerats I see coming no problem there

Next up is the Bear. Yep there it is.

For some reason I end up fighting the bear alone. What the hell are ADA and Dogmeat doing?

Half dead I look up from the Bear and see they are fighting a crazy Sentry Bot.

It charges me

I die and it takes a full 10 seconds before my corpse hits the ground.

Clearly this trip is going to take a little more preparation than I had expected.


Bear continues to be a bit of a road block

primarily because the damn thing has back up....today it was a Stingwing plus a swarm of junk bots.

It's mocking me, I'm sure of it

The RNG is certainly messing with you, that's for sure.

My unsolicited advice is ditch ADA (for the time being), her highly tuned enemy sensors and aggressive combat mode are not helping you here. Get a human companion whose less likely to run off and leave you stranded.

Today's lesson

As you build up your settlements, establish you suppy lines and see more minute men patrolling the world, you may start to feel a sense of overconfidence and tell yourself "I don't need to save right now, I'm just running over to that place near by I'll save when I get there"

Slap yourself for thinking that and save the damn game, because you never know when a Rust devil is going to walk around the corner and shoot you in the face, wipping out hours of progress


So I've been doing a lot of running around lately. Mostly saving towns that are under attack.

This was delayed considerably by some crazy guy hold up in a building on the road with a minigun. Ended up going the long way around to avoid him.

The current settlment under attack is Finch Farm. Getting there wasn't too bad. It's what I found when I got there there that is more than a little horrifying. Massive swarm of killer robots including 3 Integrated Tankbots.

Tankbot charge is unpleasant at the best of times. 3 charging Tankbots.....you could tell from the way my body flopped around that every single bone had been turned to dust.

I think we are going to need a plan

Oh Greylurker, what did you do to the monster spawner to anger it so much?

Suggested: New plan: capture and tame a deathclaw, leave it to protect Finch Farm.

OMG, Dr. Vault Tec hasn't captured ANY monsters for her nefarious experiments yet... I've got a project to work on....
