Argh. I need a function to find my missing companions. I can't find Cait anywhere. She's not in the original place I recruited her and I checked all my settlements (even building and ringing a bell in each one).

if you are on a computer there is a console command that allows you to teleport to the location of an NPC. I used it for the same reason.

Sometimes, a companion will go to a plot location instead of where you tell them to.

Dark Archive Bella Sara Charter Superscriber

Thanks, but unfortunately I am on a PS4. Maybe she's at the location for her personal quest - I tried going there to see if she was outside the location, and didn't find her, but maybe she's inside.

Check Piper's house.

Killing a super mutant behemoth in one shot is always fun. I really like my modded out gauss rifle. Of course, I am sure that the 5.4x crit damage did not hurt either.

Sadly, it isn't just 13 year olds. A friend of my father (who was in his 50's at the time) used to play SNES era rpg, like Final Fantasy VI, and name all of the female characters using either his daughters' names or female specific expletives. I always wondered if that was a sign of deeper problems, but there you go.

It wasn't the "crass humor" that concerned me. It was that he was putting his childrens' names on the same level as sexual epithets.

Yeah, "gee, a beloved child or crude name for reproductive organ?" seems pretty effed up.

Anyway, on the game... Sebastian check the forums at Bethesda's site... a lot of folks have similar issues. Most what I've read is that they either end up at a quest location or a different companion's starting location, especially Publick Occurrences or Nick's office.

Silver Crusade

Yeah if we could have a "Scrap all Junk" option... that'd be great.

I've now created an automatic, laser shotgun pistol that ignores 30 energy resistance. Naming it The Quad.

since we're talking about companions, who is everyones favorite? Mine is Cait, due to her two very nice assets. Lockpicking so I don't have to, and the fact that she never seems to get in my way like I see with other companions.

Small rant:
Codsworth, I love ya, but you made a molotov explode on my face because it hit you. I wouldn't normally hold that against you, but I threw it! It's like you heard the click, then decided to float your ass right in front of me. You didn't even keep moving after I died! I never had to put up with that shit in Skyrim! What's with the step back?

I'm loving Cait so far, angry redhead with a sexy accent is always welcome :3

As much I love Piper though she dos tend to step in front of me when I'm sniping or throwing something more often than the others it seems.

Codsworth is a badass. And a sir.

Dogmeat is... an awesome dog.

Cait's cool.

I hate that Settlement building requires such a specific SPECIAL and Perk investment to make it anywhere near useful. You need Local Leader for supply chains, Gun Nut and Science for defenses, a multitude of Perks AND Local Leader for any shops, etc...it's kind of obnoxious.

It also feels arbitrary.

"Sure, build that fully functioning automated turret with 1 Int while you're drunk."

"Woah buddy. If you want to build a wooden shack of reasonable size, and tell someone to sell things in it, you'd better have the skills required. Who do you think you are? Someone in charge already?"

I get that they wanted some kind of investment to be worthwhile, but I get the feeling the developers didn't have a whole lot of ideas for Cha perks.

Reposting from the New Vegas thread:

Also I did some testing and apparently you do gain bonuses from having Stats over 10 (or 11). I have clothing and some legendary armor pieces that boost Strength and my carry weight kept increasing whith each peace. Rocking a 14 right now :3

Though as Rynjin pointed out diminishing returns kick in (I haven't noticed this with my carrying capacity yet but I wouldn't doubt it).

Regarding companions -- while I normally in a game like this try every companion I come across, I've only been with a few so far. Once I got Piper I enjoyed her so much I didn't trade someone out for awhile, though I'm giving her time off so I don't feel like her sister is abandoned all the time. ;)

I've played with:

Dogmeat - Only briefly, because you have to for certain quests. I've never been into the canine companions much, although Rex wasn't bad in NV (I liked the brain quest) and I have a soft place in my heart for the Unlucky Dog in Fallout 2 (he's supposed to be a lodestone around your neck that you should want to try to get rid of by any means necessary, but his effects amplified my own "jinxed" perk, and we wandered the wasteland together watching raiders shoot themselves in the face wherever we roamed). Dogmeat has always been just... there. If you want a pack mule, that's about all he's good for, IMO.

Codsworth - Like him, though his preferences are very LG so he keeps you to some strict behaviors if you want to take him with you. He's a great help early on--I wouldn't have survived Corvega without him. Like some of his reactions to places. I like that you have him from your old life. I finally found a bowler hat for him, yay.

Piper - Spunky feisty pistol packing reporter... totally my type (even if in her articles she tends to bury the lead; as an ex-journalist myself I kind of want to give her some tips and an AP style guide...). I can see folks loving or hating her, but I adore her, and I romanced her. I like a lot of her incidental reactions to places ("Is this abstract art---oh. Oh god."). She feels like a pretty organic character overall, not just someone who's there for inexplicable reasons. I've not had the issues some have had with her getting in front of me--though I think part of that is like her, I also tend to charge forward (I am NOT playing a sneaky character) so we just charge toward different enemies and stay out of each other's way. She's good with her pistol, as well as other guns (if you do want her to hang further back, give her an assault rifle and a lot of ammo and she is good to go), but I also popped an electrified Chinese sword in her inventory, and after I saw her go to town on a super mutant with it, I let her keep it. It was almost a little scary.

Deacon - I thought I would like him, but unlike Piper, his sarkiness tends to go into a more arrogant mode that annoys me. His lecturing me about trusting people and don't believe what you hear and all that... I'm like, dude, I have a law degree (the female main character has one by default for some reason, which is weird to try to shove into personal backstories), I could probably teach YOU a few things about twisting words and truths. I think I should have picked some tougher responses with him the benign "whatever dude" responses I gave him. He's also stuck on this dialogue loop about his "deactivation code" (which I know is BS) so I can't seem to have any other convos with him. Doesn't seem to be as useful a combatant as some of the others. He IS good for sneaking on the rare occasions I attempt to do that and I have another character/playthrough in mind who would probably get along with him way better.

Strong - Using him at the moment just because. Man, he would be fine except he "dislikes" lockpicking -- any lockpicking, even on a "friendly" container. There's no particularly good reason either... he just doesn't seem to like you "fiddling." Which basically means it's impossible to explore the Wasteland with him, like, at all. I'm afraid I'm gonna set him hostile, because there's not enough stuff he "likes" to counteract it (I did actually attack one "friendly" NPC which he likes, but I had specific reasons for that and I otherwise am not on a playthrough where my character would do that much). He apparently likes "helpful" conversations and unfortunately I just am at a spot in the game where not a lot of those are happening. So once I'm done getting his help with some feral ghouls, I think I'll dismiss him to the Slog and have him help protect the ghoul farmers. He is certainly a good combatant and his responses to a lot of things are funny.

Nick - REALLY liked him when I found him, and the only thing keeping me from using him more when I found him was I wanted to travel with Piper instead. Hope I get to use him later, this playthrough or another.

X6-88 - So far he's been pretty meh, and I'm about to turn on the Institute so I'll lose him. I've heard he can get interesting to get to know, but you get him so late and in such particular circumstances he's hard to get to know.

Danse - I went as far as unlocking him but haven't played him or the Brotherhood stuff much. He seems fine. I know he has an interesting story. But I haven't played with him enough to develop a firm opinion.

I haven't met/unlocked Cait or Curie yet. I know I'll probably like them, they're just out of my way and Cait's probably not a good pick for my current PC--but perfect for the build I'm planning on my next playthrough so I'll see what she's like then.

Silver Crusade

It's my headcannon that Piper, having raised her sister after their father was killed, is just very protective of people she cares about so when you encounter enemies that's why she puts herself inbetween you and them.

Silver Crusade

Also I don't know if it's a glitch or what but unlike in NV you keep the unlocked companion perks even if they're not with you.

DeathQuaker wrote:
People opinions.

See I agree with a lot of that, but my opinions on Piper and Deacon are reversed. Of course, I'm playing a stealthy sniper type right now, so Deacon not blowing it was very helpful for me. And Piper just felt like they wanted the "spunky go-getter reporter" character trope that has never interested me. Especially when she seems to think it's a good idea to personally insult and demean everyone she wants information from. The mayor, his secretary, a guard, the last two of which are just trying to do their jobs.

What does "Bury the lead" mean? Is it when you obscure your point?

I really don't have any major problems with Codsworths moral compass deal. He dislikes doing the same things I dislike doing, so it works out. Plus aforementioned bowler hat. Do companions benefit from stat increases?

Preston was about as forgettable as I could imagine. Like Jacob and Kaiden in ME rolled into one bland burrito that you forgot was on your plate.

I want to like Strong, he's fun to talk to, and if you do get his approval up a step, the conversations are interesting. But it's just so much more effort to keep him happy with your decisions than everybody else.

Nick was really well written. And he's got this whole "zombie Robot Detective" look going on. With how selflessly helpful he is, it's hard not to like him.

Is it weird that I liked Curie more

spoiler for her personal quest:
before she transferred herself into a synth? I just feel like it was a bit of a cop out for the writers to not be able to come up with a way for her to grow "mentally" so to speak, without just making her functionally human in every way. And it seems to make her more I don't know, "Vanilla" than she would have otherwise been?

After all, there are already

Even bigger spoilers:
2 Synth companion options.

I like Curie, she's so upbeat. Haven't found Deacon or X6-88.

So far I think my favorite companion is Hancock. He's pretty chill, and has some good lines. Cait is surprisingly sweet a lot of the time for a Raider sort.

Strong is cool, but like DQ I couldn't stick with him because he doesn't like lockpicking. His morals are weird in general. Fitting for the only completely non human race, but frustrating in play. Like, he likes talking things out...but also brutally murdering f$&$ers. And taking disreputable jobs, but not asking to get paid.

He wants you to act like a Super Mutant. Be really short-sighted and kill as many things as you can, reasonable or otherwise.

I forgot about Hancock somehow. I'd like him too if I had any idea how to recruit him.

Deacon's easy, you just need to join the Railroad.

Silver Crusade

Well he is voiced by Goku...

For Hancock, you need to do the quest The Big Dig. That starts with a Misc thing in Goodneighbor where you have to talk to Bobbi No Nose.

Sovereign Court

Hey. When you go to HalluciGen INC. I can swear that the voice who does the warning message is Brent Spiner's. I can swear.

Green Smashomancer wrote:
What does "Bury the lead" mean? Is it when you obscure your point?

Basically. The "lead" is your leading sentence: what your article is about. It should succinctly state the event/thing/person you're reporting on, and it should try to answer most if not all of the classic journalism questions: who, what, where, when, why. Whatever in the lead doesn't answer those questions should be answered by the end of the first paragraph.

Then you elaborate and add sources and detail, arranging your article from most to least important.

Off Topic Rambling:

Here's an example, where the subject of the article is supposed to be about a town meeting held to address citizen concerns major crime.

====Article that Buries the Lead and is generally indefinite====

Quote:

The city is very worried lately about crime. Jake Henderson, 56, yesterday talked about how he had to get a new security system for his house, and Cindy Smith, 22, has been organizing neighborhood watches. Many people complained at a town hall meeting yesterday to the mayor about how there wasn't enough police presence, especially in light of the fact that 28 people were murdered on Saturday night.

===Article that is better organized===

Quote:

In the wake of the murders of 28 men, women, and children in the neighborhood of Slickton on Saturday night, Mayor Jones held a town hall meeting Monday evening to hear resident concerns about the sudden increase in crime. 50 area residents attended, all to express their concerns about the situation.

Six residents, including Janie Jones, 43, blasted the mayor for the low police presence on Slickton's streets. "People do horrible things because they know they can get away with it!" she said. "What are you going to do about it?" The mayor did not reply.

Some residents offered community solutions, such as Cindy Smith, 22, who proposed organizing a neighborhood watch.

((etc. etc. etc. etc.))

(A better example would show articles of the same length but hopefully you get the idea.)

In fairness to Piper (and the writer IRL who wrote her articles) the pieces you get to read are really feature pieces that don't have to be as strictly organized, but the pieces still fail to get to the point quickly enough, IMO. But I'm being nitpicky, and I still love her. ;)

What confuses me about Piper's articles is: if she has a printing press (even with a need for maintenance), why are her articles handwritten?

You don't use a printing press to copy handwriting, that would be a mimeograph. (Also they'd be blue print then.)

Spoiler:
Not including Curie, there are 3 right? Nick, x6, and Danse?

I had a pretty funny moment, this one spoiler free:

I was invading a raider camp, and I thought I had gotten all of them. So, I went to loot one of the fallen, and a raider walks up behind me (I always play in third person), he doesn't attack, he just taps me on the shoulder and readies his gun.

He got a face full of .45 when I turned around, but it was amusingly unexpected.

Sure, but this is the wasteland, unless you're with the Enclave, Brotherhood or some other similarly huge organization you don't ususally have access to much professionally made stuff of any kind. Have you seen the post apocalyptic architecture? Or armor, weaponry, cuisine?

The difference between a newspaper being regarded as serious, and regarded as a joke can come down to presentation quite easily. Piper is already printing conspiracy 'zine level subject matter, having it in what looks like high school notes font isn't lending her much credibility. In fact, even actual conspiracy theory newsletters usually have the decency to be typed in a decent font. :P

Honestly I think it was just a mistake by Bethesda, using handwritten style and completely forgetting that she has a printing press.

Since I'm not wearing armor, I'm making a beeline for the Railroad, so I can start making ballistic weave. It's tough playing with 1 END and no armor, especially before I acquire great stealth skills and silenced weapons.

Please, for the love of God, tell me there's a quest to find a better DJ for Diamond City Radio.

This. The font on her papers is the same font used in most written notes you find in the game, and whichever visual designer worked on them either half-assed it by making it look like everything else and/or didn't get explicit/correct instructions (for example, they probably were not involved in script writing or area design and were not told Piper has an old-fashioned printing press).

This is the kind of thing though that someone will probably mod and Bethesda won't formally bother to fix.

Speaking of getting in the way, Preston is really a bad companion, even in some of the Minutemen quests.

I also get this feeling that without the Power Armor, many things become a lot harder if not impossible.
Or you have to quicksave/reload hundreds of times, to scout and develop some tactics.

The only time I've used power armor, after the initial quest (I only used it for the big beast then), was when I forayed into the glowing sea. For me it's an inconvenience.

Speaking of Rifles I'm trying to decide which one to go with right now, the one that does 50% more damage against humans, or the one that ignores 30% of DR?

Obviously the DR one would be more useful against everything that isn't human but I wonder if against a human it would be more effective than the 50% damage one.

Advice?

I think 30% DR is all around better, especially since high powered rifles suffer the most reduction from it.

Silver Crusade

Okies, hmm, will have to experiment a bit...

Yeah - I'm just about ready to give up using any companions. They are constantly getting in my way, blocking my movement as well as my shots.

Plus they are just soooo f-ing stupid. I had Piper wait while I scouted down a hall. A Raider found her and started beating on her with a tire iron - and she just stood there and let it happen! She didn't fight back. She didn't defend herself. I mean just blatantly idiotic! And she was armed with a 10mm armor piercing automatic, plus a shotgun, plus an aluminum bat. She was standing there, pistol drawn, and never fired once! I watched in amazement because at least in the older FO's companions would defend themselves when attacked.

I'm going to start a new character who will be a total a+$*%!% and piss off all companions to the point where they won't adventure with him, take the Lone Wanderer perk, and just f-it.
