Gnomish Illusionist, Colorspray, and you!

Gamer Life General Discussion

Who has war stories about getting their butts kicked by an illusionist besides me?

It was an evil campaign, everyone in the party was lawful and followed their own laws. I was but a Young Fighter of only level 2 and my brother was playing a gnomish illusionist named Grimble. I don't remember the exact circumstances, but I was on a train protecting a guy with a sachel. the party didn'd know what was in the sachel, but we were guarding it's delivery. We had a Chaotic neutral Barbarian who I believe had brain damage, and Grimble had him charmed for most of the game.

At some point in the train ride grimble decided that the sachel belonged to him and told the barbarian that there were bunnies in the bag that the man planned to kill. The Barbarian raged; I stepped in to stop him, and Grimble colorsprayed me. I fell asleep, and the little bastard coup de grace'd me.

Never underestimate a gnome backed into a corner.

Any other fun stories?

Gnome oracle of the heavens mystery. Colour spray taking out higher level baddies.

One time we fought this guy.

I have a character like that right now. Only second level, but looking forward to being able to unleash tonnes of havoc at higher levels. Once third-level slots and Widen Spell are in the picture (Magical Lineage - Color Spray), knocking any number of 9 or fewer HD baddies in a thirty-foot cone unconscious with a Will DC of 21. Sure, there are things that are immune to mind-affecting illusions, but there's nothing I know of that's immune to the unconscious condition (sleep and paralysis yes, but not unconscious).

Of course, if I'm wrong on that last one, I'm sure a flood of examples will soon be forthcoming.

lol I love the image of a vampire and a robot, both hit by color spray, standing their with swirling rainbows in their eyes, staring off into space.

Even if I have to repeat myself. Garden gnomes are not gnomes (despite the name), they're Redcaps.

I cast color spray once with an elven wizard did not really tihnk it was much fun.

not a gnome, but my first ever 3.5 character was a halfling sorcerer with significantly more Charisma than Wisdom. In the first day I played him, I managed to neutralize several tough encounters single-handedly, which lead to being perhaps just a bit too cocky.

What can I say? When you're level 2, and your BSF kicks the door in on a nobles house, and proceeds to start a fight, the best answer is probably one which doesn't leave bodies. So what the BSF was in the area of effect, and had something like a +0 Will save? What was even better was that I didn't even see the room, just stuck my hand around the corner of the doorway, and >poof< all the baddies (and the BSF) were down for a long, long time.

Illusionist traps are fun, especially when the illusion is of something that's actually there, just in a different spot. Imagine jumping over an illusion of a hole, only to land in a hole covered by illusion of solid floor. It only a 30' drop with a nice soft landing in a refuse pit, but the otyugs at the bottom complete the trap just fine.
