"Disguise Self" and Eidolons

Rules Questions

Shadow Lodge

G'day,
Currently i'm making a Synthesist Summoner. As a consequence of this, i'm going to want to spend most of my time looking like an Eidolon, which could prove inconvenient in most pub situations. While researching magical items, I found the 'Hat of Disguise Self'.

Hence, my question is-

Does the Disguise Self spell allow me to change my Eidolon so that it looks like a human, or at least more human-ish?

I know that the spell states

"You cannot change your creature type (although you can appear as another subtype). Otherwise, the extent of the apparent change is up to you. You could add or obscure a minor feature or look like an entirely different person or gender."

But I just wanted to be certain.

It won't work because of the rune. Why would being an synthesis be a problem?

Quote:
The eidolon also bears a glowing rune that is identical to a rune that appears on the summoner’s forehead as long as the eidolon is summoned. While this rune can be hidden through mundane means, it cannot be concealed through magic that changes appearance, such as alter self or polymorph (although invisibility does conceal it as long as the spell lasts).

Shadow Lodge

Not fussed about the rune, more about concealing the fact that the eidolon is an eidolon. IE making it look human or at least human-ish.

Assuming that no matter what Disguise Self will have no effect on the rune, can I use that spell to disguise the Eidolon to make it look human?

Shadow Lodge

IE make it look less like this

You need a hat to cover up the rune.

Otherwise the disguise self spell should help you along. You cannot change type, but luckily for you an tiefling or aasimar can seem rather human, although a bit exotic.

Shadow Lodge

So I can us Disguise Self change the eidolon to look like some race other than human? Why is that? From an Eidolon's point of view, all meatbag bipeds look alike...

There are 3rd pary evolutions that let you use such magics and give bonuses to disguise

Yeah disguise self or the Hat of Disguise works, but you still have to cover that rune up.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Fortunately the Hat of Disguise doubles as a....wait for it.... HAT. So just pull it low and I should be fine :)

Thanks very much, wraithstrike.

Good thing you're already wearing a nice hat, then.

Edit: Beaten to the punch. :P

I know this board has been dead a while, but I got curious. If the eidolon is large, or even Huge, is it possible to still disguise the eidolon to look human-like (like enough to get into a tavern or not send townspeople screaming, so I don't worry if the rune is showing)? I also looked at the hat of disguise but also the alter self spell itself. Would this work? It seems to only cover medium and small adjustments. Thanks for any advice.

The Greater Hat of Disguise uses Alter Self, and makes you assume the form of a small to medium humanoid.

I have also considered Petitioners: Something seems strange and disturbingly familiar about this wispy, ghostly humanoid shape
Abaddon (Neutral Evil): The “hunted” have bodies that are identical to what they had in life
Elysium (Chaotic Good): The “chosen” have idealized versions of their mortal bodies
Hell (Lawful Evil): The “damned” retain their mortal forms, but are heavily scarred by various tortures
Nirvana (Neutral Good): The “cleansed” take on the forms of animals that closely approximate their personalities
Utopia (Lawful Neutral): The “remade” retain the same body shape but have milky white skin covered in dense black script
How ghostly can vary by GM, but if it is dark, you can blame the lighting. Or you can play it up as being a friendly spirit. [Especially if you travel in company with a Haunted Oracle.]

The Disguise skill can also be used.

The biggest thing is that unless the tavern is used to entertaining large/huge creatures, you will never fit in, and most smaller beings dislike unfamiliar larger beings close by. If you invest in Diplomacy, you can talk everyone into accepting you. Bluff can be used to make others think you are harmless.
