Gen Con 2012 PFS

Pathfinder Society

Hi All,

I've never played in a PFS game before and Gen Con seems like a good opportunity. Couple questions...

Is it too late to even consider Gen Con this year as a PFS potential?

How would you go about signing up for a PFS game? Even if it is to late, this information would be useful in the future.

I've never been to Gen Con either, so I don't know much about signing up for any game there.

Rory,

There is a *ton* to do at GenCon. There are also many online guides to making the best of your visit- simply google "GenCon Survival Guide" and you will have hours of advise and tips to read through.

GenCon would be a great place for you to play PFS... sign up for the "First Steps" scenarios. You can always play a pre-generated character in these events, but my advise to you is to download the free Guide to Organized Play, buy a PDF of the core Pathfinder rulebook, and familiarize yourself with both prior to the convention- you will get a lot more out of it if you do that.

Most events at GenCon operate on "event tickets" -- you need to buy a badge to attend the convention itself, then individual tickets for the games you want to play. Game organizers will limit the number of tickets available for a particular game to the number of seats they can support (i.e., if PFS has enough GMs for 6 tables of a particular game at a particular time, they'll make 36 tickets available).

GenCon also sells "generic" tickets, which you can use to try to get into a game for which there are no tickets available, but it's a bit of a crapshoot -- you might get into the game if some of the people with "real" tickets don't show up, or if the event organizer has an extra GM available, or if they decide to seat 7-player tables, etc...but you might not get in, either.

You can buy a badge and event tickets here:

After you buy a badge, you can buy event tickets. If you search on RPGs, then use the keyword "PFS", you'll see all the Pathfinder Society offerings. A number of them are sold out, but there are quite a few which still have tickets available. Unfortunately, the First Steps introductory scenarios are sold out in a lot of time slots (though Saturday looks more promising for those), but there are other PFS scenarios available which are also appropriate for 1st level characters...just check the detailed description of each scenario to see what levels it's for (you're looking for games which are for "characters of levels 1 through 5", or something like that).

Hope this helps!

That helped a ton! Thanks!

I GM Pathfinder, so would not need the First Steps introductory scenarios to learn the game persay. The regular adventures should be peachy to play in.

In the adventures for levels 1-5, could you potentially get placed in a group as a level 1 with a level 5 adventurer too? That seems like a fairly drastic power difference. Or do I need to worry about that at all as they just group people logically on site?

I was happy to see that Lexington, KY you got a new VC. I'm only a short drive from there and that seems like a good way to continue a PFS character.

You're very welcome!

It'll be very unlikely to be an issue. When they're mustering tables, they'll try, to the extent possible, muster players into balanced groups at the right tier. Unless things work out very oddly during muster (i.e., everyone else signed up to play that scenario in that slot is bringing higher-level characters), you should wind up with a table of other characters at the lower end of the level band.
