Conqueror by the same band is also good...Drat! That's two!

Love the Gates of Slumber. They're a local band for me. Heavy, traditional, doomy metal. Indy is not known for any kind of metal scene, which sucks.

Band/Album title

Wintersun-Wintersun
Dimmu Borgir-Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia
Dimmu Borgir-Spiritual Black Dimensions
Satyricon-Nemesis Divina
Satyricon-Dark Medieval Times
Immortal-At the heart of Winter

Love this song.

Brother, you and I are of one accord on this. Maybe we should just private message and shout artists and album titles at each other!!! LOL

Anyone who's friends with me on Facebook knows I essentially do this almost every day. I got a "11th Hour" hook-up to go see Dream Theater and The Crimson ProjeKCt (consisting of King Crimson members) last night. I prog nerded out and shook hands with Tony Franklin during intermission.

I see a lot of shows and I take pictures most of the time depending on what access I have at the venue and the promoter involved. I also had to end up creating a separate FB group page so that my friends can follow along when I announce a band has a new album coming out or if I want to share my latest find that I'm really digging.

Moonspell or Mortiis - The Stargate/ Crypt of the Wizard

My favorite by Mortiis as a solo artist is Keiser Av En Dimensjon Ukjent (a/k/a Emperor of a Dimension Unknown). I still have the video he did for that entire track on VHS. I need to convert it to DVD.

But he started getting a bit too poppy for my taste starting with The Smell Of Rain. But he will forever be tied to one of the most genre-defining albums in black metal of all time with this song.

As for Moonspell, I've been listening to them since their full-length debut in '95. One of my favorites from that album, "...Of Dreams and Drama (Midnight Ride)".

The Gates of Slumber is an excellent doom band. They're out of Indianapolis and they've jumped on a 10-date tour with Hammers of Misfortune out of San Francisco as the headliner. I'll be catching them in Columbus on July 20th.

EDIT: partial ninja'ed by Calvert.

That's what I hear from my Cincy metro and Dayton friends when they head out there. I wanted to see Dragged Into Sunlight and Coffinworm (who's an Indy band) a couple Sundays ago, but it wasn't in the caravan budget for me.

Thanks for reminding me--Hammers of Misfortune -The Bastard--is a terrific metal album with some medieval flair. I highly recommend it. Has anyone mentioned Slough Feg on this thread yet?

Yes, got his first album. But not that one.

The best Dimmu Borgir album was Stormblast. With 'For All Tid' a close second. Should be seeing them in concert this year. \m/

Without a doubt in my mind the greatest is:

Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son

Don't question it. Just game with it in the background.

Silenoz is an amazing presence onstage. He is close to Hanneman from Slayer in intensity! Saw them in 2010 on the "Blackest of the Black" tour. Silenoz made a finger-to-the-lips "shushing" move after the crows went berzerk at one point and the crowd did calm for a split second. Pretty chilling.

They are on tour supporting a re-visitation of that album in North America right now! You should try to see them if you can.

I'm "butthurt" that I'm not. Closest to me is Detroit. Not in the budget cards this time around to do that caravan. Maiden is my #1 favorite band.

How could I have forgotten... yes, I could easily be convinced to name this the best D&D/Pathfinder metal album!

Have tickets in the orchestra pit. Really looking forward to this. Last saw them in '85.

The Exchange

Listened to a band at the game last night called "Blood Sacrifice". It went well....Kinda a mix of early Black Sabbath, A spinkle of Rush, and the flute throws thought of Jethro Tull into there.

I know and it's killing me on the inside. The closest they'll get to where I live is Dallas, TX. That's at the limit of the distance I'd drive to see someone, but I'd still have to come up with ticket money, food money, gas money, motel money, money money, etc....

I'd love to see this tour, because frankly I felt the "Final Frontier" concert that I saw was pretty dull, and I hate to say that about my all time favorite band. I even saw them in a hole in the wall club in Memphis when Blaze Bailey was still with them and it was a more exciting show than that one.

Grand Lodge

Pathfinder PF Special Edition, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Maybe it's me, but I never could get the Metal/D&D connection.

For me, Metal is metal because of the modern urban jungle resonance. The pseudo midieval settings just don't click for me. At the very least the setting would have to have strong noir elements like Eberron. Metal would work for me for a Highlander type story, but I can't synch it with Lord of the Rings.

While not strictly metal - anything by Rush.

Fixed link.

Good observation. Both, actually. The only thing that made me cringe was how he pronounced it, because it should be sounding similar to your reason, as the similarity was meant to be intentional by Blake.

I did see Bruce tour for that album.

Quil wrote:

Agreed. Although I admit my preferred era is Moving Pictures and earlier. They're coming to my neck of the woods in September, but I've put off seeing them because Nightwish & Kamelot as well as Kreator / Accept / Swallow The Sun are both coming in September too. Of those mentioned, I've only seen Kreator once in the early 90's. Whereas Rush, I've seen several times. Seeing those last two packages are more affordable combined than seeing Rush on their own.

EDIT: That said, if a Rush ticket happens to land in my lap at the eleventh hour, I wouldn't hesitate in going. That's also how I managed to see Primus recently.

AS a kid of the 80's I played D&D with Iron Maiden's Powerslave album on in the background. I especially like tracks like, 'Back in the Village' and 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner'.

Moonspell or Mortiis - The Stargate/ Crypt of the Wizard

Mortiis is great for gaming. Dargaard-Eternity Rites is great as well. I also want to suggest Type O Negative-Bloody Kisses and October Rust. They are a band of vampires ;-)

Not "Flash of the Blade?"

As a young boy chasing dragons
With your wooden sword so mighty
You're St. George or you're David
And you always killed the beast

But times changed very quickly
And you had to grow up early
A house in smoke and ruins
And the bodies at your feet

You'll die as you lived in a flash of the blade
In a corner forgotten by no one
You live for the touch for the feel of the steel
One man and his honour

The smell of resined leather
The steely iron mask
As you cut and thrust and parry
At the fencing master's call

He taught you all he ever knew
To fear no mortal man
And now you wreak your vengeance
And screams on evil men

Phantom Lord (especially)

Basically anything off the first three albums.

I'm surprised you wouldn't choose "The Four Horsemen" as best candidate over "Phantom Lord."

Im going to be in the pit as well tomorrow in Atlanta! I'll be the long haired dude with the Maiden shirt....oh wait.

Seriously, Ill have the Trooper shirt from 2010 tour displayed proudly, if that happens to be the same show you're going to. The new tour shirt looks awesome! Kind of a remake on the Maiden England image.

UP THE IRONS!

Saw them in Dallas in 2010. Great show! They did Paschendale, which got dropped later in the tour.

If I had to choose Metal;

I'll go with Epica: "Design your Universe" or the "The Classical Conspiracy" is , well, epic...

Nightwish: "Once" is good also...

Leaves'Eyes: the song - "Spirits' Masquerade" isn't bad either. lol

Ultradan

Shadow Lodge

Pretty much anything from the 80s with Ronnie James Dio.

I was there. In fact, it was the tour's kick-off show. I love Iron Maiden more than banana pudding, and believe me, that's a lot. But I was still kinda let down with the show. So much of their new stuff keeps slowing down and drifting into some sort of "contemplative rambling" (that's the best I can describe it). I miss the days of "Piece of Mind" and "Power Slave".

Metal and RPG's go very much hand in hand. Metal has lots of fantasy lyrics, and there is lots fantasy inspired metal music and well as theatrics. Metal has darkness, metal has light. Metal goes beyond your normal music into realms other dare to venture. Some metal bands like Bal Sagoth are an audio RPG, complete with maps, worlds, characters, stories, and music of course. Other theatrics like Mortiis or King Diamond are basically roleplaying their stage characters live. Metal is quite magic, and there is many forms of it out there from Vikingmetal to power metal, to death metal and black metal.Stoner metal and classic metal. There is thrash metal and hardcore. There is so many forms of metal to enjoy. It's all about finding your personal preferance because there is so much to choose from.

Sovereign Court

Don't forget about Bolt-thrower: Warhammer employees had a metal band.

so many good calls on this thread but i dont think any one albums is right just songs
(but i do think iron maiden's seventh son come's close)
but also metallica's ride the lighting loads of man o war but a couple of bands i've not seen on here is sabbat a couple of them where games
also skyclad the band that formed after they split up and a few tracks by the almighty

I have a music link on my smartphone that lists several metal internet stations. I've discovered more new bands in the last 9 months than I have in the last 20 years. If anyone is interested in Googling for them online for their streaming feeds, here are the names of the ones I listen to on my phone:

Buzz, Chroma Metal (be prepared, this one plays a LOT of Dio era Rainbow), ChroniX Aggression, Hard Rock Heaven, Hair Metal Radio, La Grosse Radio Metal, Loudcaster, Mental Radio, Metal Rocks Radio, Power Prog Radio, Metalzone Internet Radio, Radio Metal On, Radio Panteon, Stickman Radio, and RockRadio1.

I still have the gatefold vinyl for Realms of Chaos.

But none of them were ever employed with Games Workshop, though.

Im not going to break any spoilers, but there will be THREE Eddies during the show and they absolutely tear up one of their old songs that they havent played since 88. \m/ >_< \m/

No "Hallowed..." or "Wrathchild", thats all Im saying. The ones they chose to put in instead ROCK!

I've gotta nth Manowar. Triumph of Steel can get me in a decent dungeoning mood. (Although Judas Priest's Nostradamus albums are not "metal" they work for me too.)

Surprised you didn't focus around Battles In The North. And specifically with Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark).

Just one album? May, so hard. My my teen years were FULL of metal albums playing in the background while I read or played AD&D material.

This is the first album that comes to mind that almost entirely applies.
