What are peoples favorite scenarios to run?

GM Discussion

2/5

2 people marked this as a favorite.

For me its the Defenders of Nesting Swallow!!! I love how you can really run it in several ways with so much of the build up to the end being sandboxy. I also like that it can be run in a home game over the course of several sessions with plenty of time set aside for RP interaction. Of course its homage to the Seven Samurai only adds to its greatness.

How about you guys? Whats your favorite to run and why? Maybwe you'll inspire some of us who havent yet run your favorites. :)

Shadow Lodge

Anything with a chase. I love the obstacle checks.

Scarab Sages 4/5

Defenders is a great scenario, but my personal favorite is Haunting at Hinojai. The atmosphere is great and can be really spooky with a little bit of GM roleplay. Also, the encounters are very different from the standard "2-7 thugs show up and beat on you" that's seen in many scenarios, and can be really fun to play as a GM (again, with the spooky thing =) ).

5/5 *

I think my favorites so far (and I'm not that tenured at PFS) are:

3-18 God's market gamble - good mix of RP, combat and chases
3-13 Defender's of nesting swallow - awesome "mini-game" mechanics
3-02 Sewer Dragons of Absalom - some RP/investigation, fun combats. Also great personal memories on this one.
#45 Delirium's Tangle - Not sure why, but I loved the final "boss" fight in this one
FS2 First steps, Part II - I like first steps II a lot, much more than part 1. (might be in minority about this)

Grand Lodge 5/5

Sewer Dragons
Wonders in the Weave 1
Penumbral Accords
The Dalsine Affair

I agree on Delirium's Tangle. The final encounter can be really fun to run.

Liberty's Edge 5/5

Frostfur Captives! Ive run it several times now and playing up the goblins is always great.

WE BE GOBLINS is easily the most fun I've had with a scenario, with the slight problem that it's a module. Assault on the Kingdom of the Impossible, Defenders of Nesting Swallow, Hall of Drunken Heroes, and Rats of Round Mountain Pt. 1 have all be enjoyable as well.

As a complete and admitted newbie, I'm a big fan of the Intro series. I just got back into tabletop gaming after a long break and found the combination of puzzles and combat encounters helpful in "breaking the ice" and getting people introduced to the game.

Overall, I've been surprised at how well the scenarios are designed given the price point (versus my experience with the other organized play group that uses the world's oldest roleplaying game system and doesn't have very good or consistent scenarios) and have yet to encounter one that wasn't fun to play.

Silver Crusade 2/5

Assault on the Kingdom of the Impossible is great fun.

Voices in the Void remains my top favorite scenario to run, ever. The story is great, and it is written well enough that even I can manage to give the players a few chills now and then.

I'm with you on We Be Goblins. I would probably use this to introduce new players to Pathfinder.

Sewer Dragons of Absalom, which has been mentioned by a couple of others, is pretty fun.

Assault on the Kingdom of the Impossible was actually the first PFS adventure I GMed. The setup and first encounter(s) were great, but it turns pretty standard after that. Still fun, but only the beginning really stands out.

Black Waters from season 0 is a good ghost story, with some weird stuff in it. That first area was just creepy.

Not a scenario, but Feast of Ravenmoor is a really fun module that's PFS compatible. There's plenty of great RP opportunities outside of combat, and the fights are challenging for a group at that level, while not being insta-kill deadly.

City of Strangers has the most entertaining NPC I've seen in PFS, as well as the most memorably weird faction mission ("I do this for Taldor!").

2/5 *

"Murder on the Throaty Mermaid" hands down. I can run it really well, it suites my style perfectly. It's sandbox roleplay and improv at its finest. It's scenarios like these that make roleplaying the best hobby.

Other great ones:
- "Frostfur Captives": Perfect mix of roleplaying, interesting combat, intrigue, and sandboxy situations that create a different story every time.
- "Darkest Vengeance": I just love the creepy horror theme and the encounters. Moreland should make more scenarios... for me. :)
- We Be Goblins": Another roleplay sandbox scenario with a lot of sillyness. I don't think any GM can go wrong running Goblins.

That's it so far, but there's always new stuff coming out! I'm hoping scenarios like the Immortal Conundrum will give me a similar experience.

Grand Lodge

Penumbral accords. Has a great story and combats.
The First steps series. Part 1 isn't extremely interesting, but part II and III are.

Silver Crusade 5/5

The first couple that come to mind are Murder on the Throaty Mermaid and We Be Goblins. I like the entire Blackros series, and Sewer Dragons was another good one.

The Exchange 5/5 Regional Venture-Coordinator, Mediterranean

I've run it about 7 times now and still love The Midnight Mauler. I thoroughly enjoy playing the various characters, you've got the atmosphere of Ustalav and it's a scenario that encourages roleplaying solutions over combat.

3/5

I can think of three that stand out off the top of my head.

Silent Tide, the church encounter added a very interesting musical twist to the combat.

Rebel's Ransom, for giving my group a serious wake up call after they had been steamrolling a lot of previous scenarios.

Eyes of the Ten Part 3, the "ship" encounter there is quite interesting and led to an amusing situation involving a shield moving at terminal velocity, with a portable hole on it containing 3 characters and a stuffed owlbear.....

The Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment is quickly becoming my favorite scenario to run. Every game I've run of it has had 2 hours before initiative was called for.

God's Market Gamble is a nice "do a little of everything scenario"

I really like Tide of Twilight, but then again, I take it as an outline and embellish on it a lot.

Assault on the Kingdom of Impossible is fun, mostly because I get to use my bad Vudrani accent all day.

Grand Lodge 4/5

My absolute favorite is the complete Eyes of Ten arc, with part 1 being my favorite and part 3 being my least favorite.

Following those, in no particular order, I very much enjoy Midnight Mauler, Rebels Ransom, First Steps part 1, Silent Tide, and Mists of Mwangi. Right behind those would be Before the Dawn series, the Sarkorian Prophecy, Shadows Fall on Absalom, and Fury of the Fiend.

Dark Archive 3/5

Hands down for my top 3 are

We be Goblins - This is by far the most fun, scene chewing-ly hilarious scenario I've ever played. It never fails to make the table fall down laughing.

Rebel's Ransom - When you need to make a few powergamers cringe this one gets pulled out of the closet. I liked it so much I built the whole dungeon out of Hirst Arts for the last time I ran it.

Dalsine Affair - What can I say, I like watching PC's die.

I can't wait to play these. Big Kyle needs to get his group done so he can come run it for me!

Grand Lodge 5/5 ****

Voices in the Void

It was my very first scenario to GM and I GMed it 7 times - every time on tier 1-2. It was different and enjoyable every time again.
In one occasion I managed to kill a new gunfighter with the weakest monster in the whole scenario at a table of 7. It took me 4 full rounds and a combination of ineptitude and bad decision that allowed me that.
The last time I ran it for a group of 6 well experienced players with average level 2.5. They had to work really hard to get through - especially the last encounter.
This reminds me - I have a batch of new local players now who have started after I ran it here. Maybe time to undust it.

Shadow Lodge 1/5

Murder on the Throaty Mermaid is the one I've had the most fun with and run several times. One of the things I particularly enjoy about it is that several of the crew members remind me of evil, twisted versions of the Serenity crew and I have run them as such.

Can't wait to run Gods Market Gamble this friday and played Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment under a less than steller GM yesterday. Still, the quality of the scenario shined through and I'm looking forward to running it this Saturday.

Other Favorites: Before the Dawn Series, Pallid Plague, Defenders of the Nesting Swallow, Sewer Dragons of Absalon, Frozen Fingers at Midnight.

Best faction mission:Cheliax in Citadel of Flame i.e. 'We want your enchanted brain back so we can study it.'

2/5

Ive played more than Ive run so as a player I'd add:

From Shore to Sea as a great module that was ooodles of fun!
Sewer Dragons was funtastic
Feast of Ravenmoor - starting to like the modules more than scenarios as they seem to have deeper story.
and Frostfur Captives is also endlessly funny. :)

Liberty's Edge 5/5 *** Venture-Captain, Missouri—Cape Girardeau

Mists of Mwangi is hands down my favorite scenario of all time! I love how the the development of the scenarios has evolved over time, as Paizo learns what works and what doesn't, but some of my favorites are still classics from Season 0! The Hydra's Fang Incident, Silent Tide, Black Waters, Frozen Fingers of Midnight... even one retired scenario (Stay of Execution!)... all of these are firmly embedded in my mind as standards of what Pathfinder Society scenarios should be like and are some of the most fun to run.

Yeah, the whole arc is very good and I would recommend it to anyone. Each scenario is full of many awesome moments, it just takes a long time to get to. Part 3 stuck out though due to the ridiculous events that took place during it with the players I ran it for.

I'm a big fan of The Citadel of Flame

Why, you ask?:

Its endlessly entertaining to see how far I can string the players along with the sorcerer in the secret room. The best is when one of the PC's found the peephole, pressed his eye against it and made a standard action perception check. Eyeball, meet Scorching Ray. Scorching ray, Eyeball. >:)

Wow, thanks, Iammars! I wrote half of your favorite scenarios!

I also liked God's Market Gamble, technically-impossible-to-complete chase scene notwithstanding, and I loved Terror at Whistledown primarily for the group I was with.

Grand Lodge 4/5

Mists of Mwangi and Penumbral Accords. Simple, straightforward, great environment, and had the bonus of fitting on a single battle mat back when I only had one.

Frostfur Captives and We Be Goblins as well. Sociopathic Goblin antics are always a blast.

2/5

I love Murder on the Throaty Mermaid and Voice in the Void. Among The Gods is pretty good too, if you can play up the feeling up being watched correctly.

Sovereign Court 5/5

City of Strangers. The NPC's are absolutely the best and you get the chance to wonder through the entire city.

That's the one with the "I do this for Taldor!" faction mission, right? Definitely the most memorable and hilariously bad faction mission ever.

Yeah, that's the one. My characters now look for any excuse to yell "I do this for Taldor!" when completing a faction mission. The best is the Season 3 mod where that does actually satisfy the faction mission.

Now to go check the schedule to see if Rob is writing anything else...

Surely you mean "nobly patriotic" instead of "hilariously bad". I imagine your poor knowledge of the sweet, pure Taldan language is to blame.

I'm just glad I wasn't the one playing the Taldor character for that one.

Actually, my one Taldan character would have refused to do that faction mission if he were there. He's just a gnome from the fey forests of Taldor who happened to go wandering to see the rest of the world, and ended up in the human areas of the country. He found the petty posturing of the Taldan nobles endlessly amusing (it's like reality TV to him), so he decided to play along just to see more of it. That's the only reason he's in the Taldor faction. But he draws the line at intentionally being harmed - he's just not that dedicated to the cause.

Shadow Lodge 1/5

Ran Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment as the second half of a free RPG day today. Had a great time and I think every player had a wonderful time as well.

Thing is, I think it will become one of my favorite GM memories. I did not have the best time playing it due to some conflicting play styles at the table I was at.

However, that frustration helped me to put a lot of effort into making the module shine for the players today. I thought of what the best GM's I've played with have done and basically, noticed a lot of minor things I could do better. As a result, I think I learned to be a better GM.

The last fight, in particular was memorable, with 5 of 6 of the PC's down at various times, and was a pure pleasure to GM.

Thank you to everybody who played at my table today. This is what it is all about.

All the Best,

Kerney

The Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment by far is my favorite to run.

Dark Archive 4/5 5/5 ***

Murder on the Throaty Mermaid is one of my favourites to run. I generally like running mystery and horror scenarios. Voice in the Void is another one, although after the last TPK nobody will play it in my table anymore.

I'm also fond of The Goblinblood Dead, because it's a good, straightforward module and it's sufficiently brief that you can run it if you're in a hurry without having to compromise on the content.

From the modules, I'll have to give my vote to Feast of Ravenmoor. It just oozes atmosphere, which can be played up for horror or for laughs, and it's easily playable in a single session. I think we once did it in around five hours. There's an elegant, natural flow to it.

2/5

After running a few more scenarios, I'm amending my list to include Haunting of Hinoji and Jester's Fraud.

Grand Lodge 3/5 5/55/55/5

Pathfinder Starfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Jester's Fraud is spectacular! Really great scenario.

I personally had a blast running The Disappeared for my crew, though one of the players described it as a "spy spoof" due to the cinematic way the rolls went... I can see how an uncreative or unlucky party could get pretty mad at parts of it, but I still really enjoyed the time I ran it.

Shadow Lodge 3/5

Aside from one small detail, Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment was surprisingly good to run with its sandboxy nature.

I like the linearity of Tide of Twilight, it's quick and easy and still fun if you don't mind that linearity.

Citadel of Flame is a pretty charming scenario that's good for a laugh.

We Be Goblins is a fantastic opportunity to step away from your own character for a surprise session (I don't recommend this one gets played first, ever). You Only Die Twice is similarly good, but let's face it, goblins are funnier.

And it's always hilarious to see how First Steps, Part III ends. I've had some whoppers.

Liberty's Edge 4/5

we be goblins, frostfurr captives, Prince of Augustana and Perils of the pirate pact for me.

Mike
