Pathfinder at Gencon... Help?

Local Play

When signing up for event many of them state: "In the shadow of the cyclopean Cyphergate,.... For characters of Levels 1-5."

What does that mean? That characters start at level 1 and go to level 5? That you can just make any character up to level 5, in which case I don't see it being anything but a party of level 5s. Help would be appreciated, thanks.

If they are Pathfinder Society games, you create a character using those rules and level them up through play. You can also play a provided pregenerated character. If it is not PFS, I'd expect you will be provided a character built for the scenario.

If you sign up for all level 1-5 PFS events, you can bring a first level character and start working on advancing them. The 1-5 games break down into two tiers (1-2 and 4-5, level 3 can play either) so you won't be playing with all higher level characters.

That is a Pathfinder Society Organized Play scenario called The Cyphermage Dilemma. When playing PFS Org Play, you always start at level 1. Each scenario you play will get you 1 EXP. It takes 3 EXP to level up. So, if you've never played Org Play before, you will need a level 1 character to play and playing that scenario will get you 1/3 the way to level 2. As Narl mentioned, the 1-5 means that the scenario can be played by any characters levels 1-5. It's broken into subtiers (1-2 and 4-5) so if the majority of the group is low level, you will play 1-2 (easier encounters, lower gold reward) and if the majority of the group is higher level, you will play 4-5 (harder encounters, bigger rewards.)

Pathfinder Society plays with a very "strict" set of rules. There is no homebrewing, no house ruling, and certain rules are either altered or not allowed (for example, none of the item crafting feats are allowed.) See here for more info and to download the PFS Guide, which will outline which rules are allowed/not allowed/altered: http://paizo.com/pathfinderSociety

Thanks for the help, that explains a lot, I will read more about PFS.

The first thing I would recommend is downloading the Organized Play Guide. It explains everything you will need to know to join in, including character creation. You can find it HERE.

Additional Resources page will let you know what is and isn't legal from every PFRPG book published to date once you get your character concept in mind and if you choose to utilize those books. You can find it HERE.

If you would rather use a pre generated character, we will have those at PFS HQ and the Organized Play Guide advises how you receive credit by playing with them.

You will also want to obtain a PFS number. Go HERE and click the top link on the right that says "Join Pathfinder Society."

Other than that, a Core Rulebook, dice, and minis are all you really need.

I would suggest starting with PFS intro: First Steps, parts 1, 2, and 3. They are the perfect introduction to PFS for someone new to it. After those three games, you would advance to 2nd level and could choose any of the five Tier 1-5 scenarios, as well as the Gen Con special. Once you play three more games after First Steps, you would advance to 3rd level and qualify for the three Tier 3-7.

Hope to see you in August!
