It's a very sweet show with a nice magical girl style story. Highly recommended.

two episodes in and I am officially hooked on Drifters seems like it's one heck of a concept and going to be bringing the Epic this season.

I was hoping this was part of their Funimation collab for a second, but meh. I cannot stand the Japanese cast for Dragonball Z/Super. There is no reason a 45 year old man should sound like he did when he was 8.

So apparently there's going to be a compilation movie for Overlord.

Between this and the recent Ple Ple Pleiades OVA shipping with the eleventh volume of the light novels, I'm starting to have some real hope for a second anime cour. That's because these are indicative of continuing interest in the series to the point where it's presumed to be profitable to continue animating.

Certainly, I hope that's the case!

You mean Goku? His Seiyuu actually voices Gohan, Goten, Bardock, and all associated Fusions.

Eighty and awesome! I love Masako Nozawa's voice work, and I'm glad and impressed that she's still going strong!

She is eighty. Goku is 45-ish, and sounds like he did when he was a kid. That's the point I was making.

It sounds just as ridiculous as if they'd kept Stephanie Nadolny as the voice of Goku moving into Z. And then for some inexplicable reason decided all his relatives needed to be voiced by the same woman too.

It's not a slight on her talent, it's a matter of her not being right for the role.

Same issue with Krillin and most of the other voices that stayed the same from Dragon Ball.

I've got around 250 titles ( DVD ) in my personal library. Kind of hard not to buy them when you work in the RPG department of the local anime convention. My personal favorites are, in no particular order:

Tytania, Gundam 00, Lord Vanadis and Marksman, Maoyuu Mao Yuusha, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Sword Art Online, Halo Legends, Higurashi: When they cry, Rideback, Black Lagoon, Ghost Hunt, and Another.

There are more, but these are all I can think of right now.

Where are you located, friend? I do some con work myself.

I haven't decided if I like it more yet. I find it drifts closer to uncanny valley for me, where the things that are off seem more pronounced. I heard it takes them something like 40 minutes per frame to render.

Started watching Endride, and I'm not sure whether I should be taking it at all seriously or not. Is it meant to be a parody like Buso Renkin, or is it just a So Bad It's Good shounen?

Also...why are we supposed to be rooting for the protagonists again? The king hasn't done anything wrong on-screen as of episode 6, where the MCs have attempted regicide, committed a jail break, and joined up with a rebel army while Syun keeps going "IDGAF about these people and if they die I just wanna go home".

I like 'em and all but you gotta show your bad guy doing SOMETHING bad. The king has been nothing but reasonable so far.

Endride took some getting used to. I wasn't sure what to make of it at first, but after the first 6 episodes, I became more and more intrigued by it. It's a different sort of anime, to be sure, and may not be to most people's tastes. In the end, I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

Drifters has been great to watch. The reveal of the Ends (Drifters corrupted by evil to exterminate all of humanity, for those that don't know) and their identities were a twist I didn't expect, as was their leader, the Black King. Lots of speculation as to what figure in history he's supposed to be, as from what I understand, his identity hasn't been revealed yet even in the manga.

Ajin 2 started off kind of slow, but given how the first cour ended, that probably was a good thing. Satou still is my favorite, but at least this go round, we find out what happened to Kei's friend Kai (I was disturbed by his just sudden disappearance in the previous cour), which is apparently a deviation from the manga.

Dragon Ball Super's "Future Trunks" arc has been insane. Zamasu/Goku Black is without a doubt the most over the top villain in Dragon Ball. But he's the challenge that Goku and Vegeta needed, because the stakes have been upped considerably for them.

Still waiting on news for new Fairy Tail episodes (now there's a series Toonami should pick up), and I need to get caught up on Iron Blood Orphans and RE:Zero.

I just watched this week's episode, and I agree; things have gotten insane...in the best possible way! This feels like the very best parts of classic DBZ, where things go insanely over-the-top, to the point where it can't get any wilder...and then it does!

I'm absolutely loving this arc, and judging from the preview for next week's episode, it's just going to get better.

I admit I fell off after StrikerS. Speaking of which, have you seen Dog Days?

ViVid has a very different flavor from StrikerS. It's basically a martial arts show just, like, drenched in cuteness. ViVid Strike is similar, but... uh... well, Rinne. o wo; Less "tournament" and more "I seriously need to befriend you, but we can't use lasers here, so I'm gonna do it with my fists". XD

I have indeed seen Dog Days - all three seasons, for that matter. XD Fun stuff. I like the generally positive and upbeat nature of the show.

I enjoyed almost everything about Dog Days....except for the Hero. He just bugged me for some reason

I tried watching Dog Days twice and it didn't work for me either time. I think it's kind of like Guardians of the Galaxy - it should have worked looking at the contents and attitude but for some reason just fell flat.

So I'm watching some series now, and I've noticed something interesting: there's a split among translators about what to do when the characters say something in English, where the meaning isn't self-evident to English speakers. Some translate it literally, while others translate it in terms of what it means.

That obviously sounds rather nebulous, so some examples are in order.

In Keijo!!!!!!!!

Spoiler:
Sayaka uses "K-acceleration" to boost her speed; when she says the name of the technique, she literally says "K-acceleration" in Japanized English. However, the translators subtitle it as "W-acceleration."

This is because, even though she pronounces the "K," we're told (via Rin, the person Sayaka defeats when she first uses that technique) that she's using it as the first letter in kuikomase, which is basically Japanese for "wedgie." The translators obviously knew that there was an issue there, since they'd need to translate that word in the subtitles, rather than leaving it as-is. So they made the decision to turn "K-acceleration" into "W-acceleration" (for "wedgie") in the subtitles. They chose to go with meaning over being literal.

On the other hand, in Assassination Classroom

Spoiler:
Irina is referred to as "b*#!!-sensei" by her students (the censoring here is Paizo's, not mine or the show's). This is partially a pun on her last name (Jelavic), since the last syllable starts with a "v" and - as she herself notes - Japanese has trouble distinguishing between "v" and "b," and ends with a "tch" sound.

However, this is also a dig towards her style of assassination. Irina is a femme fatale, using seduction and sex to get her target to lower their guard before she moves in for the kill. Hence why, as a foreign-language teacher, all of the material she presents is erotic in nature (e.g. her first lesson being how to say "You are incredible in bed" in English). In other words, she presents herself as being slutty.

That's where the joke comes in. In Japanese, "b!#%@" - spoken in English - means "slut." So they're actually calling her "Slut-sensei." The translators, however, decided to leave the English as-is, keeping the literal spoken dialogue in the subtitles, despite the loss of the meaning.

(I've seen a few translators do the same thing for the beginning of the first episode of Overlord, where the note that Momonga reads about Albedo says that she's a "b*+%%," due to that being what's literally written, despite the understanding that what it's actually saying is that she's a slut.)

It's interesting to see these sorts of translation issues come up, and how different groups handle them differently. Personally, I prefer the former method, as I think that accurately conveying the meaning of what's being said is more important than maintaining literal accuracy.

A question to everyone: with the new cour about to start, what were some of the best anime of the cour that just concluded?

I like to wait until a series is completely done before I start it, so that I can watch it at my own pace. Given that, what among the recently-concluded shows should I turn my attention to?

(Bearing in mind that I only have Crunchyroll, and already watched Re:Zero and Grimgar of Ash and Fantasy.)

The Anime News Network critics pretty consistently picked both Re:Zero which you've already watched and Mob Pyscho 100 as the top shows of the Summer season. I wasn't a big fan of One Punch Man but I thought Mob was terrific mainly because of the premise of the main character who has tremendous psychic power but just wants to be "normal" like everyone else.

Two others that are very good which conclude today are the Prohibition-era, mafia drama 91 Days and the pseudo-fantasy war drama Aldermin of the Sky. Give the latter a couple of episodes because what seems like at first glance is going to be another run of the mill, haremy teens with powers show, actually gets quite serious and introspective as the show progresses. Definitely a show which consistently got better as it went along.

And all are available on Crunchyroll.

I recently watched Aldermin of the sky. It was amazing and I want more.

I get the impression that Dog Days is one of those shows that it's a strong matter of personal taste. I really enjoyed the first season, but the second season was far weaker, and the third was just a bit of a shift back to the original. Then again Guardians was my favorite Marvel movie as well.

Speaking of that production studio, I think we only have one episode of ViVid Strike left. That's definitely been my favorite this season, especially after Episode 4. I hope the franchise gets back to using more magic at some point, though. XD
