What background information is important to players of Kingmaker?

Kingmaker

Are there certain bits of information that players of Kingmaker should know?
If this is a first time on Golarian for the players but the Characters grew up here, what info is must have, and what info is great fluff, for the players to know?

The players handout is nice but very limited. If the players don't have certain information it seems that they might be working under the wrong impression in a few spots.

That really is up to you. If they have ranks in Knowledge local Brevoy or River Kingdoms then you can feed them what they need. Other than that not really must haves.

Check the Pathfinder Wiki for useful information. (Follow some links on the linked page.) Also some background on Brevoy would be good. And philosophically, a knowledge of the River Freedoms is good to have.

That is possible....I am currently a witch in a KM game.

My witch is from the swamps in the game....
.....a careful reading of that section in the players guide should be done with that player......

Spoiler:

The Slough: The East Sellen River runs through the
swamps known as Hooktongue Slough. Rumor holds that
the swordlords sent actual Brevic government agents into
this swampy area.

For example the GMG for swamp lists several creatures that maybe found there and helped with initial language selection, traits (unnatural presence) etc......

The Kingmaker Player’s Guide says

Spoiler:
....... is intended to provide
context for creating characters from the nation of Brevoy or
surrounding regions who wish to play a role in the Stolen
Lands’ transformation........

........the following suggestions should serve to spark a concept
or background for your would-be nation builder. You’ll
also find several new traits specific to the Kingmaker
Adventure Path to better customize your character and
link her to the campaign’s setting and plot.

As the GM, you need to decide what you want to emphasize going forward. If you want to focus on the fae-aspects, tell your PCs more about that. If you want to include more politics from Brevoy, tell your PCs more about that instead.

Have you read all six books yet? Make your outline, take the reins, and figure out what you're going to cut, what you're going to keep, and what homebrew or outside modules you'll add. Only that sort of prep will tell you what to focus on.

In my game, I strongly emphasized the six noble houses and the six major religions, as we're doing things a lot more Game-of-Thrones-y. But I know a fellow GM that is making it all about the "conquering the wilderness" and for his group, he emphasized the flora, fauna, and various outdoor threats they need to consider.

What's your game going to be about?

Another point to keep in mind is the lack of modern school system. How much would player characters really know? There's no telephones and magical communication is probably limited to magic users capable of casting such spells and the nobility and merchant guilds. No internet. No newspapers. Their news probably come from town criers and may or may not be accurate, recent, and distorted by political motivations.
And since 95% or so of the population will die without ever leaving their village, how much interest has foreign news for them?

On that background, how much would your PC learn growing up?
Probably very little of use.
They might learn a few bits and pieces during their training, but that's dependent on their class, backstory, and knowledge skills.

I would take what the player gives me about the character and then tell the player (over email) what the character knows in general (and maybe some updates between sessions to fill in material I did not include/consider important before the campaign started). This information may or may not be true, will almost certainly not be complete and probably be distorted based on the source of the information.

I let them have the information on the other groups and where they went. I actually made it look like they were set up to fail compared to the other groups.

I might not have been clear at the start there. I'm actually a player in a Kingmaker campaign and I don't want to over read but I would like to know what folks in the area should probably know.

Oh, oops! There really weren't any spoilers. It really is up to your gm. I'm the type as long as you have ranks in knowledge local I give you hints. Just take the players handbook for Kingmaker and use the backgrounds in there and you should be just fine.
