Best DM software?

Advice

Obviously one could just use Word to throw together campaign formation, but I have to think there is something more suitable for the task of tracking the info for an entire campaign.

Are there any DMs out there who use a specific kind of software to keep everything together? NPCs, PCs, Cities, and all the other things that make your campaign?

I'm on a Mac, so if there are any particular apps on there that would be of the best help. Thanks so much.

Hi, RayFinkle:

Try this out. I think you'll love it!

I... I don't even know what to say.

Based on the video I just watched, if it works how it claims to, this could be the greatest answer to any online question ever asked.

Thanks so much, amazing! My players are going to freak out about how cool this is.

Hee hee, no problem, and thanks. :) Have fun with it. This will undoubtedly be all you will ever need.

Haha, I'm just messing with it now to give my players a feel for it when I send them the info. I'm reading all the tutorials.

Seriously, this is amazing. I hope the community is as extensive as it should be (given the quality of the tools and the site) so maybe I could pick up a player or two if we want to grow. I just downloaded the Inner Sea region guide PDF, I don't think I can handle being this stoked to start. I need to calm down, haha.

Love Obsidian Portal & run may campaign off of it, too.

The link above is probably better suited for campaign info. But if you run Ubuntu there's a pretty cool application called ZimDesktopWiki. It allows you to create a desktop wiki of your campaign information. You can hyperlink pages together as well as load images into the programs. I find it to be a good note taking program regardless.

Depends upon what you plan on doing with your notes.

Obsidian Portal is pretty cool, but I found that the basic, free version just wasn't enough for what I would want to do. Also I didn't feel the need to keep my notes online. The vast majority of my notes were for me, not the PCs. So uploading all of that stuff seemed a waste.

What I use now is Pages and iWeb if necessary to share stuff with players. Pages is to Word what Word is to TextEdit.

What advantages does Pages offer? Well unlimited imagination for one. I can enter an item and link it to an NPC, then a map, and then other text. I am not restricted to a few topic related tabs. Text formatting is as good as any professional software you will pay hundreds of dollars for (I have compared and Adobe doesn't have a single ability that Pages doesn't also have).

I can upload everything to iCloud so I always have access to it. I can password protect documents so PCs cannot access them if I want to be sneaky.

It is SUPER easy to import text from PDFs directly into the Pages document, saving me agonizing time of correcting the formatting in Obsidian Portal.

Currently I am running Carrion Crown and have imported every single part of the PDFs to Pages, re-edited what I wanted changed, put in links to the PRD when needed or most often just imported the entirety of the PRD into Pages so I don't even have to change out of Pages.

I can run everything on my iPad and never leave Pages to run the game, Every monster stat is listed, places are there to track HP for every monster.

The only limitation really is your imagination and how what you want to do with it.

EpicWords is a much better site for your campaign. It is free for most of the items you need to run your campaign and the paid content adds more campaigns and storage space. It tracks your players XP, Loot, Journals, Forums, Calendar and uses BBCode instead of the crappy Textile markup language. The developers listen to their patrons both free and paid and are very quick at adding feature requests.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I am using Obsidian Portal because it's exactly what I'm looking for. I looked into the other suggestions and they are all great, but I think my players will like OP best.

I do have a question though. Since I am using the Paizo content for the majority of my campaign, am I allowed to upload the maps from publications I have purchased for my groups use? I mean on the map wiki in OP. Is it not allowed, frowned upon, or okay to do? Thanks.

No you are not allowed unless it is part of the community use package and you follow the community use policy.

You forgot to link it. Then again I could be a little too nosy.
