Are drow as written a balanced PC race?

Salvatore is setting his stories in the Forgotten Realms "present", so we're talking about a century and a half after Icewind Dale. It's kind of the same feeling watching the new Avatar series, Legend of Korra which is 75 years after the original Aamg stories. Only one of the old gang is left, and she's not long for this world.

Anyone can die in a Salvatore book. As a certain barbarian mainline hero found out the hard way.
