One small problem could be spammers making accounts on a regular basis, and allowing them to sit for a month to run the time out. Perhaps make it based on number of posts instead of a time limit. If an account makes enough posts without being flagged for spam, they could break out of the trial.

That wouldn't work out. What about the people who get accounts so they can get subscriptions but never post on the threads?

Edit: Sorry, misread your post.

It's just like your dog farting. It's really stinky, but you can't do anything about it really.
Babaji is as Babaji does, and you can't get rid of him/her.

Silver Crusade

Babaji rocks, but not the one on the forums.

I am imaginating Baba Ji, black magic love specialist as some weird ogre witch in the monster codex.

Another spamming jerk, this time on Goblinworks message boards: http://paizo.com/people/vekashnathji

Is there a way to ban these guys ? Any tech from Paizo.com online now who could do something ? I'm flagging this junk but he keeps posting every minute...

And now someone's created a thread that will specifically attract anyone looking for a place to spam.

The threadmasters might want to look into this one and do some deletion.

thanks everyone. Honestly, you don't have to tag every spam if you post the profile of the person here. It's just another button to press really. It helps a lot more with one offs that are easy to miss.

No worries. Thanks, Lissa.

Though believe it or not, spam whack-a-mole is more fun than what I'm supposed to be doing at the moment. :p

That was quick. Nice work, thanks. :)

"Then we will flag in the shade." links profile

And here is the next one

Perhaps some automatic bot countermeasures are needed.

Baba ji just adcrapped all over OTD. All the thread names have the exact same phone number.

I don't see how it would specifically attract anything; it's just making lemonade from the lemons that I keep having to sift through in the morning. Feel free to hide my thread so that you don't have to see it, I apologize for irritating you. (I'm actually not being a smart-a about the apology).

We are now under assault.

The only solution I know of is one of those "type in what it says on the picture" things.

The spammers are hoping to find forums where this topic is discussed, because that will increase the relevance on Googles calculations. This, in turn, will push their posts and their sites higher in the rankings and on to the first page... Which is basically the while point.

This is search engine optimization 101. I would pay someone money to do for my business what you are doing for the spammers for free.

Fair enough. If Paizo feels that my thread (or even my new PFS character) are inappropriate and in need of deletion or re-naming, I will not complain about their removal or editing.

Okay, so just so I'm clear:
Ironic Threadyapping = Okay
Ironic Babaing = Not Okay

So hard to keep this stuff straight these days.

Maybe if I post right after, they won't notice the poor innocent Baba's post in the "Recent Posts" tab. But I'll tell you what, guys: Give my present Level of Asshattery from 1-10. If it's above my normal level of 6, I'll cut it out.

Paizo Employee PostMonster General

KC, give us a break, we've got limited patience for spammers lately and fake spamming just makes it harder for us to do our jobs.

Yeah, see my edit. I'm backing off. Poor Baba will have to wait until his slightly more annoying twin gives up and heads home. His time will come.

Sorry about the mess. Sometimes my jokes aren't thought out very well, and that's normal. When they're thought out outright terribly, I just need a good slap upside the head.

Here, have a peace offering: I found another one of them rascals.

Nuke them from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

I'm sure that someone around here mentioned they had a death star lying around somewhere. That should do the job.

I'm not a web expert but ... is there really nothing that can be done about this? It feels like the site is literally under attack and it's really making the site a bummer :(

Is there nothing that can be done besides waiting for the next round of spam assaults and then removing them? Can't these morons be stopped in the first place?

I'm sure they are overseas somewhere and untouchable, but it really seems like there should be legal and/or criminal solutions to spamming like this ...

OK, sorry - done being grumpy now ...

Unfortunately, I qualify as a complete non-hacker (never tried) with only a few years of coding experience and I could write a bot that's doing this stuff. Just spend a few minutes as a human setting up an account, then turn the bot loose to spam the account.

On the other hand, that's a few minutes of someone's time every day which would make it a personal assault.

Far more likely they've figured out a way to have the bot create an account. That's what captchas (the strangely distorted characters when you create an account) are supposed to stop.
