Speaking of Glee, y'all have heard of the Glee Spoofs, right? They are very cleverly made machinima with the Sims 2 and generally speaking are better written than the actual episodes. What they've been doing with Season 3 is brilliant especially, particularly in relation to how Glee's utter fail regarding Santana's coming out storyline. (Also, they did "Perfect" and the "Cell Block Tango" WELL before Glee did...)

The same creators also did a PLL spoof. :) With Judy Bauer's recommendation, I'll have to check out the real thing.

Huh...I didn't even know about this thread until just now. Interesting! *sits and listens*

By chance, do they happen to be written by Scribegrrl? Her recaps actually got me addicted to the British TV show "Bad Girls". Since I no longer own a television, I'm going to have to read those you've mentioned. Thanks! :)

I never knew this thread existed either.

It was Heather Hogan, actually. And now I might need to add Bad Girls to the queue...

Not great but better than The L-Word: Lip Service. Some terrible characters, but there are apparently so many lesbians in Glasgow that there are still plenty for you to cheer for! (Also, some Season 2 episodes feature geek humor and nerd rage. Also, NSFW.)

Thanks for the show recommendation, Judy. I've only watched one episode of PLL now, but I'm liking it so far. :)

You may only be able to find it on DVD - and that only for Season 1 unless you have a Region 2 DVD player (or region-free software). But I recommend it. The odd thing for me was that it's quite a serious show, but thanks to Scribegrrl's comments I couldn't help but laugh through quite a bit of it.

I'll have to look up Lip Service too. :D And now I'm seriously considering moving to Glasgow. I love the accents.

Heh.

Watched a season and a half of Glee, due to incredible boredom one week in Anchorage.

I don't want to get buried under a landslide of upset from the Glee fans here... but I got enough of those sorts of issues when I was in high school.

Now, if you're looking for something ELSE to watch, may I recommend almost anything by the BBC? But particularly Doctor Who...

I have a hickey. There is no mistaking it for anything else. It is too high on my neck to hide under my collar.

I plan on telling anybody at work who asks about it that I fell down the stairs, just to be a smartass.

I knew a girl in high school who would tell people she ran into a door knob, and the look on people's faces when they thought about that, was priceless.

LOL. That's funny.

When I was a kid, for guys it was always they burned themselves on a hot muffler of their car while working on it and for girls it was because they burned themselves with a curling iron.

I guess it should make me feel like I am 20 again...

Back in my college days, I went to visit my mom on a Sunday afternoon. We were riding in the car and she says, "So, are you seeing anybody?"

"No."

"Are you sure you're not seeing anybody?"

"Yes I'm sure."

"Do you know you have a huge hickey on the left side of your neck?"

*look in visor mirror*

"Crap."

My mom knew I was gay, but I didn't feel like telling her I was drunk the night before and made out with a friend of a friend while I was at a club.

Shifty, must we be on opposite sides of every issue?!??!

It's true, I look forward to the day when the subject becomes a non-subject in the way we don't feel the need to converse about whether the sky is blue, and indeed it becomes a general day to day non-issue where the notion of where one puts ones private parts and with whom raises no eyebrows nor interest, and indeed no one really cares apart from those who might be interested in joining in.

I'm hoping for Sexuality threads to make about as much sense as a blue eyed thread, or 'people who drink water' thread.

I actually agree with this sentiment. Why is it suck a shocker to speak about sexuality, even to this day?

Why must people be forced to feel uncomfortable speaking about it, or anything related to it? Why must we force gay people, transgender people and the like to feel "different" in a bad way?!

I've spent the last few days (on and off) reading the entire thread. Do I win a prize?

Seriously though, very interesting!

A few terms have been used that I don't understand what they mean.

"AMV"
"Shipping" (used by Samnell mostly)
"Straight not narrow"

Can anyone explain?

BTW, I'm amazed that only one post had to be removed!

Silver Crusade

AMV = Anime Music Video

"Straight not narrow" is a play on the expression "on the straight and narrow," which refers to somebody being upstanding. "Straight" being another term for heterosexual, and "narrow" having an association with the term "narrow-minded," it is a way of a straight person to state their support for those of other orientations and gender identities.

For "shipping," I'd need some context.

I think in this case we're talking about fans of tv series and other fictional mediums. Shipping as in rooting for two fictional characters to get into a relationship. A common subject for fanfic. That's my guess of what he's asking about anyhoo. :)

Thanks CH and lynora!

I had a friend in college who was on the fencing team. She would tell her mother they were fencing bruises. Poorly aimed rapiers indeed.

ericthecleric, it is very cool how little this thread has needed to be moderated. The thread on transgendered gamers has made me more concerned but at least for the most part that's remained civil, to my knowledge (I may have missed some posts though).

I think it helped that this thread, from its inception, was opened as a place for LGBT and like-minded people to talk about daily life issues, rather than as a forum to debate LGBT rights or the legitimacy of the lives of LGBT people. There is plenty of that sort of thing on other threads (which I tend to keep hidden, because I think there are forums for those discussions/debates and Paizo isn't one of them).

That's right. Shipping often involves fanfic, but can entail just looking at the show and taking any sort of non-hostile interaction, or even outright hostile interaction, as evidence that the principals are dying to get inside each other's pants. Usually the latter is done more for laughs. Portmanteau names are fairly common in referring to preferred ships, sometimes with the sexually dominant partner's name coming first. If those names would lead to ambiguity usually one or both are substituted for references to physical traits or character elements.

Everything you need to know, explained by a British person.

I realized this post would be better with an example: Palpakin.

Palpakin is the pair of Palatine and Anakin Skywalker. Palpatine is interested in Anakin in a really creepy way from early on. By the second movie it's so obvious that even the oblivious prequel Jedi catch on. In the third, Palaptine even has Anakin on his knees and when Anakin gets up it's obvious something has happened.

The fact that the ship is unhealthy, creepy, or whatever gives it a lot of its comedy value and that's mostly what I ship for, but there are cases where at least some of the writers and actors had to know what they were doing. Wincest (shipping the male leads of Supernatural) is so blatant that they had the characters themselves find out about it.

Samnell: As you are a Doctor Who fan, you may be interested to know that John Barrowman and his sister Carole have written a Torchwood novel. Click here. The first half of the podcast is an interview with The Overtones, but the Barrowman interview follows.

I've been a Who fan since about 2005, though I didn't really start making an effort to catch every episode until Tennant took over.

Haven't read any of the Whoniverse novels. I know a few episodes I've enjoyed are adapted from them, but I spent entirely too much time on Star Trek and Star Wars novels in the 90s to be eager to hop in. Are they generally any good?

For the current ones that they are publishing now, I've skimmed through them and most are at least of decent quality. My niece (an intelligent 12 year old) loves them and I gather they are written more for the intelligent child crowd, but then such literature tends to be pretty good.

Now for the old series, I have a ton of old Target novelizations to peer through at some point...

Oh Bob, sorry for not being more overtly positive when responding to your considerations of coming out of the closet, I was super tired when reading your posts originally and missed how anxious you were. If I could redo my initial reaction I would definitely focus on some Different, More Uplifting Points ™ in my response. Oh well. Coming out is always a bit intense, I’m glad things worked out for you.

I thought you were very positive.

What has surprised me most about coming out is that I have had zero anxiety attacks since coming out. I suffer from PTSD which gives me some intense anxiety attacks sometimes. I have been at peace these past two weeks. It's a very refreshing feeling. I'm sure that I will have anxiety attacks again but I don't think I'll have them as often from simply being myself anymore.

That’s good, I’m glad.

That’s great to hear. I think all around you might find your anxiety reduced and your quality of life improved, and even when things get tough, just remember that you’ve already done the hard part in coming out, you have the immense courage necessary to be yourself, there is not much the world can offer to stand against that.

Thinking about shows that contain some gay themes I love Glee, but haven’t seen the third season yet, where I have been told apparently everything is ruined=(.

L-Word comes off as rather cringe worthy to me (although I haven’t seen the whole thing.) With only the transgender character Max seeming like a real person(that I can recall) and not some negative stereotype about lesbians specifically and women in general crystallized into a sociopathic, narcissistic cardboard cutout of a character.

I actually started playing the first episode of Lip Service a few days ago but only got about five minutes into it because it started with a sex scene between two attractive women and, don’t get me wrong, I like that kind of thing, but it was just one of those things where if that was what they were using to hook me right in the beginning I wasn’t particularly hopeful for the series in general so I went back to watching Burn Notice. I’ll give Lip Service a shot at some point but it got pushed down my queue a bit.

I hear Pretty Little Liars is the greatest show ever from basically everyone who has seen it, I definitely need to get into that.

On another note, the one movie I just cannot recommend enough is Brokeback Mountain. It is literally one of the few bits of media I have ever seen that takes an honest look at a gay relationship both internally and externally and the ending was the most perfect capturing of the essence of grief I have ever seen.

When my mother asked me about the hickeys that would occasionally appear on my neck I would tell her the most clever and plausible of lies to conceal their origins: I told her I was the victim of repeated vampire attacks!

The rolling of her eyes was a clear sign her brain was being overwhelmed by the truthiness of my silver tongued deception!

(er, and if you happen to read this at some point mom, I may have been lying about that but that twenty that disappeared from your wallet when I was eight really was stolen by those vulture monsters from the Dark Crystal and the candy I had was my reward for chasing them off…I love you!)

I had the same reaction to the opening scene of Lip Service, but trust me, it gets better (although there is a fair amount of sex scenes).

By the way, hi. This will be my official coming out on this site. I'm a bear in case you are wondering, a middle-aged, bearded, hirsute and slightly paunchy gay man. I also like bears, which is one reason I get a little put off by the jokes about how unattractive dwarves are supposed to be. Not all of us gay men are elf-like fairies.

Love Paizo and their take on these issues. It's more a messageboard thing.

That’s cool, I’ll definitely give it a watch after I finish my current round of shows.

Howdy, and welcome. I lean more towards liking elves myself but one of my best friends is the bearyist bear you’ll ever meet, and he leaves you looking for his Blue Ox Babe when you meet him. It’s funny too because the idea he might be gay never seems to cross the minds of most folks he meets until he does something like kiss his boyfriend on the cheek or something, then heads proceed to explode.

That song has officially made the wedding reception circuit—got played at the wedding I attended last weekend and a good third of the attendees knew the dance. Though given that the bride's father was wearing a Star Fleet admiral's dress uniform (and was not out of place), results may not be typical. :P

(It's also available for karaoke nearby, but sadly I read Hangul too slowly to tackle it properly.)
Edit: Here's a helpful analysis of what's going on in the video. It's apparently the first K-pop video to engage in social satire!

Thanks for the link, that is pretty cool. I’ve always found it interesting that it is in satire where someone often first loudly says what most people are thinking. I wish him much success!

Indeed its a kickass video. Very bloodhound gang style dance. Love it.

I must be the only one who doesn't like it. Normally large groups of people performing dance numbers is kind of my thing, but this one leaves me cold. Maybe if its beat made me less uncomfortable and there were more hot guys not wearing much. There ought to be a way to work in some serious lyric dissonance too, like making it an upbeat pop song about torturing someone to death. And Star Wars and Doctor Who.

I know, I know, everyone wants to see a massive dance number where hundreds gyrate to the Empire torturing Rory Pond, who is wearing a male version of Leia's slave girl outfit, sung from the point of view of an Imperial torturer who enjoys his work way too much. That's like soberly opining on how you like breathing. There must be some way the internet can make this happen.

So tomorrow I was going to make my big public debut by going to a theater and grabbing a few drinks at an LGBT friendly bar. Turns out, that isn't going to happen. I can get a ride there but not back and I have no intention on driving under the influence especially while wearing a skirt. That would not be how I want my first outing to go.

However, I am house sitting for a friend so we are going to go over there, grab some food and a movie. We're going to go for a walk, probably head into some stores so I can interact with others even if it's just being around strangers while dressed up. I'm completely scared out of my mind but if I can get through this once, I can start to do it more.

I have to say that I have some awesome friends. People I would never has expected to be supportive have been there for me. It's been wonderful.

Rock on, Bob. Rock on!

Ok so things did not go even remotely as planned. Only two people showed up but not at the same time. We didn't go to a movie or go to Capital Hill (LGBT friendly area). But friend 1 came over early and we went to grab a pizza with me while dressed. We then went to a store for candy. I stayed at the car while she went in. I didn't have the courage. It was dark but someone called me ma'am. We spent the rest of the evening indoors.

The new plan is to go out once a week to build courage. I can do this. I plan on wearing that St Pauli outfit. I'm paying $120 for it to be custom made. It's not going to be a waste of money.

I hope you win, Bob

Do it Bob!

Shadow Lodge

So I got my computer back Monday(yay!) only for it to still not work(boo!). :(

Now, to celebrate, I had planned to post a letter I wrote to D(things have gotten a lot better since I last talked about him) a while ago and published on a different online community. It felt really good to just get all of it off my chest, and the responses were wonderful. Only Paizo has a community as great as SoFurry(in my opinion).

But, since my computer is still rebelling against me and holding all my pdfs, half-written stories, and music hostage... not much to celebrate.

Still, if anyone wants to read it, I'll post it here anyway.

P.S.: Got a new library card, so I can at least post again.

Safe Space Training is something I did in college when I was in the GSA(gay straight alliance.)

I think this might the the offical site?.

It might seem a little silly to be trained in this stuff. There are many people who seem friendly towards LGBT rights but undermining the cause due to there ignorance of GLBT issues.

One of the issues that I had trouble empathizing with: having your parents disowning you because of your sexual orientation. They kept telling me to imagine my parents disowning me. I kept telling them that I couldn't. Then it hit me. They are going through the unimaginable. It was a cathartic moment.

I was lucky that no one wanted to disown me, as far as I know. I'm sure there are some family members that would not approve if they were still around or if they knew (not everyone follows me on Facebook). That being said, since I'm in my early 40s, I don't have the same issues that a teen or young adult would have to deal with. For me, support just means that you treat me the same way today that you treated me yesterday before you knew. I don't ask for much. I'm really surprised when someone goes above when I didn't ask. For example one of my coworkers is going to donate a bunch of jewelry to me and show me how to convert the earrings to clip-ons. I didn't ask her for that but she said that she really found my courage to be inspiring and wanted to do something for me. She has no idea how terrified I am but that's a whole different story.
