Playing Civ II while waiting on the Gameplay thread to hatch.

My insomnia is now catching up to me. Nodding off at keyboard. Going to take a nap.

Could definitely use a nap myself-- wearing my sleep T-shirt that says "Nap Queen," so the temptation is very present. zzz...

So on a different angle, because I've been chewing on this for a few hours and trying not to 'shoot from the hip', what is the 'safe limit' of discussion on this thread without triggering the 'trip wires'?

I'm not trying to be silly, it's a concern I have because this is an awesome thread and I don't want to see it shut down because I do a comprehensive post on a topical part of the thread or in response to someone else.

Sorry Rysky :/ I'll go xD

Welp I didn't anticipate the whole work work work thing to be so real.

It seems to be that as long as you stick to the OP topic, you should be fine. Staff have been generous in letting other people who are struggling to also post in this thread, but the thread headline and opening post are pretty clear:

The LGBT Gamer Community Thread.
I thought it would be cool to create a thread where members of the LGBT community who are also gamers could come and share their life stories, experiences as gamers, and struggles (whether in dealing with their sexuality in relation to our society or not).

The posts that have been shut down seem to mostly be trolls trying to stir up trouble, and topics that don't relate to the issues the thread was started for.

I'm trying to find the post from staff in a different forum when we were discussing the shut-down of political threads. If I recall correctly, they said this thread would still be available for LGBTQ issues.

Removed off topic political post. Let's circle back to a bit closer to the intention of the thread ;)

Ok let's see, anybody play any fun video games lately?

I'm not an addict.

I can quit ANY time I want! Honest!

My recent past-time/time-killer

Anarymana, Wyrmrest Accord, World of Warcraft

*coughs*

Though, considering it, I can't play male characters on WoW or most MMO or games for some reason, and when forced to, I rapidly lose interest in the game unless there is a way to make them female...

I think it's because I can 'dress up my virtual dolls'??

I've been crashing bandicoots, actually! Working on getting all the gold+ relics in Warped.

I almost never play male characters, for the most salacious of reasons.

The Exchange

Only old but f2p stuff like DC Universe Online on my PS4.

Had made the gay wolverine Captain Howlett and WANDJINA from DC.

Skyrim and Halo Wars on the 360. Civilization II on the PC.

Civ IV on PC; but I upgraded to Windows 10 last summer and it hasn't worked right sense. Too cheep to buy it again through Steam; and too busy as a PFS VA anymore to spend time on video games.

Never was a big consol player.

Hi everybody! (wanders back in from the wilderness)

Run it under Compatability Mode. Select the mode that corresponds to the version of Windows that ran Civ IV the best. I run Civ II on my Windows 10 laptop just fine.

that is not a sure fix for all games, depending on when the CD was made. Windows had a lot of screwy "protections" in place that make some games impossible to run, compatibility mode engaged or not.

glares at mechcommander 2, mechwarrior 4

Still, it's worth a try.

Shadow Lodge

Tried that last summer. Got no traction.

Bummer. Well, I'm out of ideas. Unless you tried the Windows Compatibility tool?

Shadow Lodge

I did.

And since I can't get Starfleet Command II to work on Steam, I've decided to not worry about it for a while. I'll let them work the bugs out till next Christmas. I'll try both again then.

I'll keep an eye on the MSDN forums. See if there's a solution. Civ IV won't run in Windows 10, right?

Shadow Lodge

I can't run it from my original disks. Haven't tried buying the Steam copy of Civ IV though.

I did some digging, and Civ IV's version of SECDRV.SYS is incompatible with Windows 10. SECDRV.SYS is a Copy Protection DLL placed on many old games. This might give you more info. Hope this helps.

shakes angry fist at Microsoft, computers in general

I found SECDRV.SYS available for download. Problem potentially solved. All in less than an hour. D**n, I'm good.

Passes notes to Rysky, MechaPoet, and Vixie. "Help! I'm being held by Freehold. He wants versions of Mechcommander and Mechwarrior that runs on Windows 10. Written from scratch." :)

Seriously, though, if those games won't run for you FH, you may have the same problem that The Usual Suspect has. Go ahead and download SECDRV.SYS from the link above. It's worth a shot.

Sorry, nothing I can do about it. The pen may be mightier than the sword, but a mechaPoem is no match for a mechaSword (not to mention the mechaCannons...).

Freehold, Reddit says that the problem is related to the SafeDisk copy protection. Wow, what a surprise. The driver should work.

I want to punch Microsoft really really hard right now.

More constructively, what should I do?

Download that driver from the earlier link and install it in the correct directory. Restart the computer.
