Wiches' patrons and new spells. Anybody can help me?

Rules Questions

When I read the APG, I believed that a witch has access to the common list of spells and particular list of your patron.
I assumed that a witch without the resistance patron can not use miracle.

But in the advanced player guide, I noticed that many of the spells guaranteed by a partycular patron, were already in the open list

For example: At healing patron spell list: "mass cure
critical wounds" or in enchantment patron list: dominated monster...

Are typos?

Some of the new spells as unnatural lust, appear as enchatment patron´s spell. I guess it restricted to the appropriate patron. But the spell list of chapter 5, he said only witch 2.

Are these spells available to all witches or only those with the right patron?

Can a witch learn a spell warranted by another employer?

Liberty's Edge

A witch can learn a spell if it is on the witch list or if it is on the patron list.

A spell can be on both lists. That means witches who get it as their patron spell learn it automatically, but other witches have the option to learn it.

A witch does not automatically know all spells. She learns 2 new spells per level. That means, assuming she spends those 2 spells on the highest level she knows at that time, she will know 4 spells of each level.

Yes, Four. A lot more first level spells, since she starts with them, but from level 2 up its that.

The rest she has to find, trade with other witches or buy in form of scrolls. And all that is up to the GM. Some are really stingy with new scrolls, or roll them randomly.

The patron spells she gets and knows automatically at the indicated level. So even if some spells already are on the witches spell list, there's no guarantee the witch knows it or has an easy time finding it. With the patron she definitely gets it, even though usually a level later.

In case of Unnatural Lust (and I think a few others) she actually gets it as 1st level spell, while another witch can learn it, but its a 2nd level spell for them.

Other spells that aren't on the witch's spell list, are only available to witches with the apropriate patron and high enough level. For example, Lesser Restauration is only available to witches with the Healing patron who are at least level 4 and no other witch.

all clear thanks

Some patrons offer mostly spells already on the list and are trap options, IMO. Others give mostly new spells and are awesome. I suggest going for patrons that offer new spells. In my handbook, I actually automatically rated any patron spells already on the witch list as the lowest ranking possible no matter what spell it was, with a * to denote that being the reason.

Witch spell list is very limited and narrow. Don't blow your biggest chance to expand it a bit. :)

Not the absolute best? Must be a trap.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Elements patron to get a bunch of blast spells, largely fire-based = not the absolute best

Portents patron to get basically nothing but spells you could have learned already = a trap

But I am a big fan of hyperbole, so thank you for your post.
