Inspired by another thread, I thought it would be fun if everyone listed there Top 5 Favorite Bands (or solo acts).

Don't worry about ranking them in any particular order - just list your top 5.

These are the 5 bands (or, like I said, individual musicians) that you love above all others; you listen to most often; you couldn't live without if you were stranded on an island etc.

Genre doesn't matter - if you love Metallica, Miles Davis and Mozart, then put 'em all on your list!

Here's my list:

Top 5 Favorite Bands
Rush
Pink Floyd
Kiss
Aerosmith
Iron Maiden

Within Temptation
Fields fo the Nephilim
The Cure
Iron Maiden
Metallica

Scarab Sages

No ranking within the top 5 - its hard enough to leave out some bands / Musicians for just not quite making the cut.

Gamma Ray
Blind Guardian
Savatage
Therion
Grieg

(Edguy, Händel, Bethoven, Queen, Leave's Eyes, Iron Maiden being constant contenders, so I want to at least list them here)

The first three are easy. The last two are subject to change depending on my mood.

The Who
Johann Strauss Jr.
Scott Joplin
Pink Floyd
The Beatles

Maiden
Thin Lizzy
Ronnie James Dio (in any incarnation)
Mindless Self Indulgence
Sly and the Family Stone

There is a high-falutin' British film magazine called Sight & Sound that has been running (IIRC) since the early '50s. Every ten years, they have a huge poll of directors and film critics to determine the "Top 10 Films of All Time!!!"

It should be happening soon, come to think of it, but in the last poll (2002ish?) the editors wrote that, while everybody else pruned their faves down to ten, Martin Scorsese submitted a list with 800+ films on it!

That's just about how I feel. No way in hell can I pare it down to five, but I'll attempt 10:

The Beatles
The Clash
The Smiths
The Pogues
Funkadelic
Booker T & the MG's (which is a way of cheating, since they played on most of the Stax! albums--Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Rufus Thomas, etc., etc.)
Public Enemy
John Coltrane
Elvis Costello & the Attractions
The Velvet Underground

And, still, I didn't include a single country or blues artist.

Can we have a "What are your top 800 bands?" thread?

Yes, yes, yes!! (Not the band--although The Band were pretty awesome)

10 bands are not enough!! I couldn't fit in: The Rolling Stones, Howlin' Wolf, Bob Dylan, Al Green, Gang of Four, Charles Mingus, Serge Gainsbourg, Television, Belle & Sebastian, Hank Williams, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Ludwig van Beethoven, ABBA, Ice-T, Kraftwerk, etc., etc., etc.

Okay. I'll stop now.

I fond and sincere thank you to those that followed the rules :P

To those that did NOT ... Ahem ... Top 5 Favorite Bands means, you know ... your top 5!!! None of this "I can't pick just 5, here's 10 or 20.

Come on - be decisive! :)

Seriously, let's really try to pick your TOP 5 only!

Those of you that wimped out and listed more than 5, go back and edit those lists!!! No whining or complaining! Top 5 ONLY! :)

Stop trying to put me in a box. I'm Asphere.

AC/DC with Bon Scott.
AC/DC with Brian Johnson.

There is no other need for bands.

My apologies, Mr. Radle.

The motion for top 10 was seconded

Iron Maiden
Slayer
Black Sabbath / Heaven & Hell
Immolation
[intentionally left blank as it has a revolving cast]

Rush
Alice Cooper
Devo
The Beatles
Blue Oyster Cult

Which one do you like more?

Liberty's Edge

The Ten Most Played, according to Banshee:

The Misfits
The Cramps
Desmond Dekker
Cake
Ella Fitzgerald
Dead Kennedys
The Rolling Stones
Bob Dylan
The Bird and the Bee
Cat Power

What I listen to is far too dependent on mood, company, situation and other factors for me to try to chose five "favorites". If you ask for five favorites in a particular genre I may be able to accommodate, but my tastes are far too varied to pick one type/band/whatever over another.

Dearest Marc, I leave this lovely poem here for your enjoyment:

Spoiler:
ANARCHY.

Ever reviled, accursed, ne'er understood,
Thou art the grisly terror of our age.
"Wreck of all order," cry the multitude,
"Art thou, and war and murder's endless rage."
O, let them cry. To them that ne'er have striven
The truth that lies behind a word to find,
To them the word's right meaning was not given.
They shall continue blind among the blind.
But thou, O word, so clear, so strong, so pure,
Thou sayest all which I for goal have taken.
I give thee to the future! Thine secure
When each at least unto himself shall waken.
Comes it in sunshine? In the tempest's thrill?
I cannot tell--but it the earth shall see!
I am an Anarchist! Wherefore I will
Not rule, and also ruled I will not be!

JOHN HENRY MACKAY.

The problem with telling people "be decisive" about favorite bands is that most people I know their favorite groups are always in shuffle depending on who's more recently released something, whether or not they liked it in comparison with their older stuff, and other factors.

Plus what HD said. Five is a far, far, far, far, far too small number in which to attempt to categorize something as broad and varied as music. Trying to narrow it down to a single set would end in a repeating edit cycle of "Wait, how did I not remember X group? And who should I drop in their place?"

Also Yay Anarchy!

So yeah, not gonna happen. =P

However to best accommodate your request I will only list bands I would have at one point or another considered worthy of a top-five spot, rather than all the bands I enjoy listening to on a regular basis. Otherwise I'd be here all day =P

In no particular order:

Sonata Arctica
Blind Guardian
Iced Earth
Demons & Wizards
Sabaton
Within Temptation
Therion
Nightwish
Symphony X
Sirenia
Tristiana
Helloween
Manowar

Right now they are;
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (BRMC)
Black Angels
Black Keys
Black Joe Lewis
Pure Reason Revolution

Just noticed that 4 out of 5 of my fav bands have Black in their name, weird.

Grand Lodge

Pathfinder Maps Subscriber; Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber; Starfinder Charter Superscriber

(It cannot be coincidence that Maiden appears so frequently, going to see them for the 16th time next month!)

IRON MAIDEN
ManOwaR
Metallica
Megadeth
Dio (as above, in any incarnation.)

Yes, he was pretty awesome. I lost track a long time ago--is he still writing or playing?

They reunited for a few baltimore area shows in 2010, IIRC.

1 daughter who is 5 and hates to sleep.

It's funny how little kids who have nothing to do at night never want to sleep. Me, I can rarely make it past ten these days.
