Favorite Power Rangers

So I know I'll get some flak over this but as a long term fan i simply have to wonder. So who is your favorite Ranger and which series is your favorite. I'll Start.

Favorite Ranger: Tommy Oliver (Mighty morphin green/white,Zeo and Turbo Red and Dino Thunder Black)

Favorite Series: A Tie between Mystic Force and S.P.D.

The Exchange

Never really cared for them. I had an older buddy who was so waiting to watch the show just because of the commercials that came out. Then he was disappointed once he saw it.

I however know several people who liked and continue to like the show. I just don't get it.

I was seven when it first hit so i got sucked in and since as my wife puts it I refuse to grow up I have kept my love and am now leading my 3 yr old down the path of awesome.

Tommy Oliver was the best ranger, but power rangers in space was the best show. The characters all had actual personalities and motivations. The writing wasn't nearly as cheesy as usual, and the villains were intelligent and villainous.

I look at the movie when i watch it (the first one not turbo) and it pains me how great it was on several fronts that we could have had if they stopped using stock footage and made the show completly.

I agree also claw that PRiS was a great show.

Thuy Trang (RIP)

Oh wait, you didn't say 'hottest'.

Tommy Oliver is kind of the Ur Ranger. (especially since Dino Thunder hinted he'd been the one responsible for several of the rangers in the interim.)

I din't follow PRiS, though the end of I think LG when Zordon was killed was kind of awesome.

I liked Ninja Storm (for the humor) SPD (for Bridge) and RPM (for the humor and the darkness.) Overdrive's 'nostalgia ranger' episode was nice too.

And face it, 20 somethings in spandex? I'm a hermit, not a saint. :P

Wich one was Voltron? That one is my Fav.

Umm wrong show but still awesome.

As a kid, I was more fond than was probably healthy of Amy Jo Johnson.. so I'd probably have to say the Pink one from the original.

Can't say that I watched it much though, and never saw an episode of any of the later ones. though I have caught a movie or two now and again.

When I was a kid we had Star Blazers (loved the Russian-sounding theme) and G-Force. Power Rangers come much, much, later.

If you have netflix you can watch every episode now.

Not a chance, 'G, not even close. I watch enough children's programming because of my 2-yr old daughter, not adding more into the rotation. lol :)

Liberty's Edge

I was in my late teens when (Mighty Morphin’)Power Rangers first came out. I saw a little of it as one of my little brothers used to watch it. My impressions were of how crappy the special effects / monster costumes were, how similar the plot / action of every episode seemed to be, that line, ‘Make my monsters grow!’, and that the Yellow Ranger was quite cute.

Fifteen years later and my son watches (I assume) the current series, Power Rangers Samurai. Impressions: the special effects and monster costumes appear a little better (the main leader bad guys and the main bad guy mooks look quite good, some of the special guest bad guys look pretty stupid, and the Ranger’s vehicle / beast / robot things like more B Grade than ever); general production value and script seems a little better than before, some of the storylines are actually quite interesting; the Pink ranger is cute, but not as cute as the original Yellow ranger; and why is ‘Mentor’ known as ‘Mentor’ and not ‘Sensei’ if they are supposed to be following a Japanese tradition (they are supposedly samurai after all), and why does he speak with a kiwi accent (apart from the practical answer of the show being filmed in New Zealand)? In fact, if they’re all supposed to be descended from samurai, why don’t all of them look at least part Japanese?

I wasn’t aware that there had been intervening series of Power Rangers between the original and current.

Every year since the origanl except for last year, which was a redo of the first season.

A friend of mine was an extra in th 1995 movie.

I have the recent Japanese live action Star Blazers (Space Battleship Yamato) movie.... It's ok.

I liked Billy(original blue ranger) because he had the triceratops megazord.

The kid who was the blue ranger in Turbo was cool too.

They didn't use the American Russian-sounding theme. :(

Go Go Power Rangers!

Star Blazers Theme

Loved that theme as a kid. Now, well, let's just say that it has lost its luster.

I think I read somewhere that the 90's X-men theme was a discarded option for a Power Ranger's theme. No source though.

LOL.

I haven't watched in years, but I was always a big fan of Kimberly. Amy Jo Johnson's lovely.

*nods* She doesn't act much anymore, but does have a musical career.

I don't know if anyone sat through "Not another teen movie" but the 'naked exchange student' was a former power ranger too.

She currently stars on the TV police drama, Flashpoint. I did a double take when I first saw her.

I've seen every version of the show since it aired on Fox. To be fair, I've always been into the whole tokusatsu genre since I saw my first Godzilla movie at the age of 5 (back when TBS was called WTCG and it was a UHF station, showing programs like Space Giants, Ultraman, and Spectreman).

As far as rangers go, Tommy Oliver as the Green Ranger was my favorite, but Jason Lee Scott as the Gold Ranger comes a very close second.

And as for favorite series incarnation, I'd have to say it's a tie between SPD and Mystic Force for me, though I've been rewatching them all on Netflix and I've got to say that I'm digging the Space Ranger ones (PRiS and PR:LG) more and more.

::cough cough::

Pink. Amy Jo Johnson

But that's not the pinnacle of my wrongbadness. Princess Ariel from Thundaar the Barbarian got my attention years earlier. And how.

Silver Crusade

Princess Ariel... she gave me that special feeling too.

I didn't like the Pink Ranger so much. Kinda thought she was too high maintenance. Trini, the Yellow Ranger, was more to my liking. Though I never liked that she looked like a guy when she morphed. I understand why that happened now (stock footage was used and the original Yellow in Japan was male) but back then... The male body/female voice made me twitch.

When virtual-voice divas take up the super sentai/power ranger mantle, relatively sfw.

Opening for an added extra, at no cost to you.

As an extra added bonus, when freeware virtual-voice divas join the Ultraman family, completely sfw.

Interestingly, I love all the kikaiju stuff, but I truly hate power rangers. Not on a Haterade (tm) level, however -I love/like the original japanese fare. I just found the American takes on it to be painfully bad. But that's not surprising, knowing me.

While they may be out there, I don't personally know anyone who thinks the Saban Power Rangers stuff was "good." My take was that it was a fun, hilaribad cheesy FX show with a cute gal in it (who turned out to be a pretty good actor and singer). I've never had the opportunity to see the original tokusatsu but it looks like fun entirely in and of itself, as its own thing.

And Reruns are now in effect.

As an added bonus, allow me to point you to the Sequel.

The original "gendered" inspiration to the above quotation....

Jason will always be my favorite - even more specifically when Tommy was recovering from his time as an Evil Green Ranger and Jason became steward of the Dragonzord. The tune on the flute still gives me chills.

But yeah, Jason as Red Ranger w/ Green Ranger shield and Dragondagger = best. And his return as the Gold Ranger, as Blayde mentioned, was CRAZY awesome.

Favorite single episode of all time was Forever Red.
Favorite series is the original, after the arrival of Lord Zedd. Though, I must confess that Rita's heinously bad lip sync from earlier seasons is hilarious. I'd say Lost Galaxy would be next in the favorites line.

I never actually watched the show, but I sure paid close attention whenever Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson was on the screen.

That would be Cape Cods own Amy Jo Johnson.

I still occasionally check the IMDB to see 'Where are they now.' PEople are kind of shocked when I point out the one lab tech on CSI is played by Archie Kao, a Power Rangers in Space alumni.

Amy Jo Johnson.

I was more of a voltron fan...

But I did think it was awesome that when I was in korea watching an episode with my son on korean TV (even tought we couldn't understand it) we noticed that they use the same fight scenes but switch the characters out for korean actors any time they showed their faces, my son had the same Ep on DVD from the states... better then dubbing I suppose.

Yeah, that about sums it up.

By the way, any fans of Power Rangers should definitely watch Linkara's History of Power Rangers series. It's an insightful (and nostalgic) retrospective of the entire series, one season at a time, with thoughtful and intelligent analysis. I highly recommend it.

There were power rangers other than Amy Jo Johnson? Huh.

Yes, but it's not clear why. I guess they needed someone for her to talk to on-screen.

Reprising that Opening...

There's Emma Lahana, Can't think of any others.

Austin St. John a.k.a Jason Lee Scott the original Red Ranger (for Power Rangers, Super Sentai is another story).

Also, I know I'm going to get flak for this but I liked Power Rangers Turbo especially now since I learned how they tried and failed utterly at adapting the comedic Gekisou Sentai Carranger (forget fighting to save the world, they fought for traffic safety) into a serious Power Rangers series.

As far as the Japanese originals go my favourite is Captain Marvelous (portrayed by Ryota Ozawa) from Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger (which is what they used footage from to make Super Megaforce). My favourite sentai so far has to be Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters though Ressha Sentai ToQger is starting to catch up.

Depends. Just as a Ranger? Tommy/Jason David Frank.

As for what they went on to do later, Adam/Jonny Yong Bosch.

I used to like Billy (he was my favorite as a little kid) but after I found out how much of a dick the actor was I stopped liking him. Though the juxtaposition of him portraying the "scrawny weakling nerd" when he is VERY CLEARLY the buffest guy on set is hilarious.

Favorite show is a toss-up between In Space and Wild Force.

As an aside, anybody else just now noticing how many of the original Mighty Mrphin' Power Rangers have long names?

Grand Lodge

Gods I had such a thing for Amy Jo Johnson and the Catherine Sutherland back in the day ...

On an amusing note, the Japanese series that was used for the original MMPR is getting US DVD release in Feb (I have it pre-ordered).

Well the right answer is Tommy of course. But after him, I always liked Wes from Time Force. It didn't hurt that he faced off against my favorite bad guy, Ransik.

Shadow Lodge

The one that was Amy Jo Johnson.

Favorite Ranger: Billy (he was nerdy, I was nerdy, and when I was that young, that was enough)

Favorite Series: Lost Galaxy (for the special distinction of being the only one that I, limited by the country vision TV stations I had at the time, was able to watch all the way through from start to finish)

Took some searching, but now we get a triumphant return to having freeware virtual-voice divas resuming their cosmically-powered Ultraman duties.
