[Rite Publishing] The Secrets of the Inquisitor: we want your input.

Product Discussion

Rite Publishing is working on another product in its "The secrets of" series and I wanted to get the input of you fine folks one what you would like to see.

A channeling inquisitor
An Indiana-Jones inquisitor with roguish talents/ninja tricks
A pirate inquisitor
A witchy inquisitor
A political "Richelieu-type" inquisitor
An ecclesiastic "classic crime-story detective"
A redeeming/converting evangelist, a paladin-like inquisitor
And more inquisitions!

I would personally like to see some alternate judgement options

some inquisitor specific spells and/or feats
and some more specialized equipment

And, since you're asking, how about an inquisitor serving an evil church? Surely they must have their enforcers also, no?

Inquisitors have no alignment restriction, so an enforcer for an evil church is do-able already :D

I would like to see something that works with ranged inquisitors. As it is, a wholly ranged inq has one of their main class abilities be useless(solo tactics)

I'd like to see some darker, more evil judgements - trying to select only evil judgements, there seems to be a derth of such, very much limiting the options. While many want cool builds of good aligned inquisitors, I prefer the more typical Spanish Inquisition inquisitors. Perhaps they don't serve an evil church but there methods seem evil.

Because nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition...

I've always thought of the regular inquisitor as a dark kind of good aligned, at best.

Judgements aren't evil themed, but nor are they good. They are both, so if you want evil themed ones, there must be good ones as well.

I am all for more Inquisitor only spells, feats, magic items, etc.

Whatever you do, I just hope it kicks ass, I currently the Inquisitor so I will totally buy this book when it comes out. I do have faith in Rite so I am sure it will be awesome.

Spells? really didn't I just do 1001 spells? heheheh

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Inquisitors have solo-tactics, judgments and spells - the latter is covered by 1001 spells. Judgemnts and solo-tactics are the way to go, I think. What strikes me a bit odd is that the Inquisitors never got a form of inquisitor-alchemy - think about it: There are tons of examples of iconic characters hunting the creatures of the night with faith and knowledge, the latter falling somewhat flat here: Special oils to anoint weapons, toxic boosts etc. Some kind of synergy would be awesome. Reliquaries for inquisitors would also rock...

An archetype that focuses more on monster hunting, like the witch hunter focuses on hunting spellcasters. Maybe bonuses to defense against monstrous special abilities or offense vs. monsters, maybe using or expanding the Monster Lore ability for that. Think the classic grizzled monster hunter who does research in the library to find the weak points of his prey before confronting it.

Liberty's Edge

First, I think its awesome that you're doing this.

Second, All I'm doing is throwing out ideas, I make no promises that they're good ones:

What about some kind of mortal hunting inquisitor, the monstrous (Vampires, lycanthropes, and skeletal champions oh my) servants of dark gods. (Who hunts the hunters?) Maybe a prc?

Speaking of prc: Maybe an Inquisitor lite type of prc for members of other classes who are inducted into inquisition as servants to an inquisitor?

The Inner Sea Magic book has a vampire hunter inquisitor archetype...although I think a different version would be awesome. One that does proper justice to Dr. Abraham van Helsing.

I actually meant the opposite.

Ie. The god of blood is tired of seeing his chosen hunted and slain by adventurers for nothing more than the crime of being superior and so he focuses some of his holy power into one of said chosen making them into an inquisitor and letting them start hunting adventurers.

The basic inquisitor would probably work out just fine, but its an idea that hasn't been explored so far as I know.

They could get Smite Transient Murderous Kleptomaniacs too :D

Jokes aside, that could be a fun one.

A Pirate or bandit hunter archtype would be nice.

This one I have already done.

Just thought I would give an update on what i have developed so far.

Archetypes
Herons of the Fountain (think prohibition)
Monster Hunter (specializes in dealing with supernatural abilities)
Thief-Taker (an urban inquisitor)
Purifiers of the Burning Pentagram (inquisitors of Asmodeus)
Questioner of Trail and Tide (deals with brigands, pirates and enemy privatieers).
Truth seeker (this is me playing with the sword of truth series)

Inquisitions
Asmodeus' Inquisition
Faction Inquisition
Marauder's Inquisition
Supernatural Inquisition
Temperance Inquisition

I am still thinking on a Mortal Slayer inquisitor style template for monsters.

I need to look at the SGG and open design books on inquisitors make sure i don't duplicate anything.

How about a heretic hunter, like a more traditional Spanish Inquisitor, but hunting the practitioners of variances in divine doctrine from the 'one true way' that the inquisitor is tied to.

Temperance is most appealing to me ^_^
Don't forget a channeling archetype or inquisition, PLEASE! This is my most fervent desire.
What about a Paradox Inquisition for chaotic inquisitors?

The Purifiers of the Burning Pentagram and the idea of Asmodeus' Inquisition both sound like great ideas, though I'm stuck with what they'd consider blasphemy.

"Didst thou or didst thou not give charity unto three starving orphans?"

"It was a moment of weakness, I swear!"

If a follower of Asmodean commands you to do a deed in the name of the Dark Lord of Fire, you do it without question those who fail to do so shall be purified! If you are a follower of Asmodean, you must obey any follower of Asmodean mightier than you those who fail to do so shall be purified! Whatever you must do to attain power, you will do, unless it is counter to the will of Asmodeus. Those who fail to do so shall be purified! Good is false and weak. Never appear weak in front of those weaker than you, those who fail to do so shall be purified!

Asmodean Inquisitors may be sent after those that have broken contracts, this is considered to be heresy.

Dark Archive

Random Inquisitor stuff I'd like to see;

An Inquisitor Judgment that impairs the ability of a foe to flee, reducing it's movement rate, or making it more susceptible to AoOs when attempting to move or withdraw, or even requiring it to make a concentration check at some penalty if attempting to use a teleportation / dimensional travel power (like a weaker version of dimensional anchor). On the other side of the coin, a Judgment that adds +5 ft. to the Inquisitors movement rate for the purposes of pursuit of a target, could do something similar, although I like the idea of hobbling a single foe better, to make it easier for the Inquisitor and her allies to chase it down...

A spellbreaker / witch-hunter Judgment or alternate class feature that allows the Inquisitor to force concentration checks on all spellcasting within her threatened area (scaling as she gains levels) could also be cool. Alternately, one that improves not only her own saves vs. the spells and spell-like abilities of her target, but also helps her allies (perhaps at a reduced effect) could also be useful.

In that vein, Judgments that punish a target for taking a proscribed action (one that harms the target if it attacks the Inquisitor, or, for a good Inquisitor, one that harms the target if it attacks anyone *other* than the Inquisitor).

Inquisitors, in other media, seem to be associated with torch-and-pitchfork weilding mobs. Some sort of archetype or alternate class feature that involves taking Leadership and forming one's own angry peasant mob could be fun.

Here is the Cover Image

So the inquisitor feats focus on solo tactics and teamwork feats, 36 of them to be exact.

Liberty's Edge

Sweet!

The Secrets of the Inquisitor is now available, there is a free preview of the Heron of the Fountain, and a teaser of the thief-taker in the discussion thread.

You really don't **** around do you? 12 days from "What do you want" to "out." Color me impressed.

I'm convinced that Steve is half man, half machine.

A lot of the mechanics exist already in my home game, I have worked with before, or take inspiration from existing products.

The archetypes, inquisitions, and judgments were easy. The hardest part were the 36 fears for solo tactics. The design is mine but what makes them balanced and useful is the sound boarding Will "Cheapy" McCardell provided. Without him these would have been good ideas horribly executed. They are not what he would have done, he had objections about play style: spell feats, troll feats, and feat names should not be 9 words long. And that's what makes him awesome he is willing to tell truth to power :)

Thank you for hearing my request. Now I look forward to read the Martinet.

I hope you enjoy it. I think adding in the option to use material from the Secrets of the Divine Channeler made it even better.

We now have two 5/5 star reviews!

That line just got you another sale! I love it when third-party companies play nice (and you and SGG seem to be pretty chummy!), and I really was worried I wouldnt need this if I had the other two books.

But since you checked them to avoid any serious overlap... sold!
