Kels, have you read any Neal Stephenson? His writing requires attention, but you might enjoy it. I'm thinking particularly of The Baroque Cycle, but it's like three thousand pages all told. Snow Crash and The Diamond Age are pretty cool too.

I've never heard of him. What's his stuff like?

If I had to describe it in one word? WEIRD. No, wait, Headachey!

The Baroque Cycle is set from the late 1600's to early 1700's, and that's the one your setting description reminded me of; no D&D style fireball magic, but there's plenty of alchemy vs natural philosophy/science and swords vs guns. At some point in the story pocket watch design advances just enough that only the cool kids have second hands; that sort of thing.

Interesting. I don't really have alchemy/magic versus science/technology, I have them working together. I also don't have guns.

Still, sounds interesting.

The concept sounds really intriguing. It has a lot of potential, and at the very least it would be something different than the usual medieval fantasy/oriental settings that have been so much a part of D&D over the years. It would be interesting to see what a Benjamin Franklin type of fellow would have invented if he had had access to magic.

OMG, Benjamin Franklin shows up in the first few pages of The Baroque Cycle! He's about eight years old, but that counts, right?
