Standard-rules classes in a Beginner Box game?

Beginner Box

So I'm planning on introducing a group of rabbinical students to roleplaying this Saturday night as part of my "Havdalah & Dragons" initiative :D

To do this I will be using the Pathfinder Beginner Box, which I am now totally in love with. That said, I have one player who has played some version of D&D in the distant past and might as a result of that want to play a druid. My question is, aside from the added complexity in terms of options at character creation, is there any reason why I couldn't use a character created with the standard rules in a Beginner Box game? I'm not much of a system wonk (which is part of the reason I'm using the simpler version to begin with), and I'm not really sure how to determine whether a druid created by the book would be overpowered in a party consisting mostly of Beginner Box fighters, clerics, wizards and rogues.

Anyone care to weigh in?

For levels 1-5 you should be fine. Though be ready for others to want to play special characters too.

Druid class, and more

Ed, I took a look at the Witch PDF. Very nice, but why no Slumber Hex?

Awesome, thanks for the advice. And thanks for the character class writeups, Ed. I may offer those to my players as options.

Please do. :)

I thought I responded to your question earlier today, but now I don't see it. Anyways, perhaps I hadn't read slumber closely enough and thought it too complex to add to the BB witch. However, reading it now, it seems simple enough to add. So feel free to do so if you like. I may add it if I have to do a correction to the witch class. Thanks.

Ed, Thank you for sharing the link here. My best friend and long time gameplayer will be joining my family's game. It was both funny and frustrating for us as he has tried to chose his character type. He asked about gomes, half-elves,bards, and sorcerers. I just sent him the link to your webpage.

Oh, cool, thank you. I hope he finds it helpful. There's a race addendum up there too, adding gnomes, halflings, half-orcs and half-elves.

Thanks, EdOWar, for the S&W White Box feats! They are going to get worked into my S&W campaign soon!

EdOWar, you do good work. I just printed up all of the races and classes from your site and I'm going to put them in a Player's Options binder that I'll carry around with my PFBB.
Once my 9 year old son and 10 year old nephew found out that Pathfinder allowed for dinosaur facmiliars and animal companions, I was immediately forced to help them make up a human ranger, a halfling druid with a deinonychus animal companion, and a half-orc witch with a compsognathus familiar.
Now, EdOWar...

One thing I noticed running this last night (for my mom, of all people...long story) is that the Cleric in the box set only starts with one domain power; a standard Cleric would have two, so I can see how that kind of difference could be noticeable. Not sure if any of the other classes have similar differences, as I just had time to scan the materials before trying them out.

Hmm, all three god choices in the Beginner Box give you two domain powers:

Desna: agile feet, bit of luck
Gorum: battle rage, strength surge
Sarenrae: rebuke death, sun's blessing

I was looking at the premade sheet for Kyra; it seemed to only list Rebuke Death and Channel (which is standard to all clerics, of course) as I recall, but I could be wrong. I'll check again when I get home.

You are correct in that the cleric pregen doesn't list the effects of sun's blessing (which would add +1 to her channel energy damage against undead). The pregens cut a few minor details because (1) space is so tight and (2) explaining the reason why she has an extra +1 when channeling to harm undead isn't worth the added complexity on the character, and (3) that extra +1 isn't a big difference in the grand scheme of things, at least in terms of how long we expect someone to play a pregen instead of creating a customized character.

I'm gettin' there. :)

Just posted the Oracle a few minutes ago. Summoner is next, then Magus and then the UC classes.

At some point, when you find yourself adding more and more complexity to a Beginner Box game, this may be a sign that it's time to move on to the big league of the Core Rulebook.

That is the wondrous glory of these options by EdOWar. It is not more complexity. It is just a few additional choices for someone who likes the Beginners Box a lot and want to let the players play what they want.

As soon as my group finishes Crypt of the Everflame with the pregens they are each remaking characters and I cannot wait. Former Valeros is going to be a Paladin (as she stated before I ever bought the BB), My wife gets to play her Witch(currently playing Kyra or Ezren), and the Rogue wants to stay a rogue. We have had two "guest Ezren's", relatives in town who did 1 shots with us.

Now when they say I want to play (insert) or points at my DM screen I can say "No prob" and hand them a 3 or four page booklet that contains all they need. Which is how they prefer gaming. Simple but limitless.

As far as I can tell there's no inherent problem in using standard core rulebook characters along with Beginner Box ones. Only thing is that some players may find themselves confused with the differences such as the one between a beginner box cleric and another player who's running a cleric made by standard rules worshipping the same diety.

I realized when I got home that I'd given her the Cleric sheet to read, but I checked the free PDF of the sample character sheets from this site and it appears that I was correct: the sheet for Kyra only lists one Domain power (Rebuke Death). See the Pregenerated Character PDFs here: http://paizo.com/beginnerbox

For a minute I thought that perhaps Sun's Blessing was factored into the DC for resisting her Positive Energy channel, but the DC listed is only 11, so I don't think so.

In any case, it was just a minor thing I noticed afterwards; everyone had fun. You guys managed to entertain a woman who has absolutely no interest in fantasy fiction (and who can't stand to watch Fellowship of the Ring because it was too scary) with a roleplaying game, so my hat is off to you.
