A fresh new start (spoiler inside)

Curse of the Crimson Throne

Dark Archive

Hi there,
I will start the CotCT this friday and I'm thinking about a little change in the relation between laam and Zelara.

spoiler:
Instead of her son, I will introduce Zelara's missing daughter. Zania is 17 and she was kidnapped by few men under Gaedren orders. In fact she was sold to the queen and became one of the first grey maiden. the queen's brooch was the price Gaedren got for the job (Zania and a couple of other girls). Unfortunately the process of becoming a gray maiden changed the girl in her very deep soul, and thus forbid her mother to find her using the harrow deck. The last tracks she found was leading to the old fishery...

what do you think about ?

Sorry for the double post, had a web issue.

I like it, tie it to a PC backstory for even more fun (girl friend to a PC or what ever). Increase her presence and position later in the story as well.

excellent suggestion !

I like the idea, but you might need to retrofit a few things, namely:

Spoiler:

  • The Gray Maidens aren't introduced until Seven Days to the Grave (2/6). They are supposed to be non-existent during Edge of Anarchy (1/6). There are no gray maidens during the riots, and Sabina herself is not yet one. As far as I'm concerned, the GMs are created when Ileosa takes the throne, and not before, as the king would have forbidden it.
  • Maidens are supposed to be selected from existing military groups. Why that interest in a 17yo girl?
  • You'll need to swap Zellara's head with either some GM paraphernalia, or with some trinket of the daughter. I'm thinking in a lock of her hair.
  • If the PCs suspect of someone in palace having kidnapped the girl, why at all risk going there for the reward (and the introduction to Cressilda)? You'll need to railroad your PCs into Cressilda some other way, IMHO.

It's a cool idea, but you might need to tackle those issues :-/

excellent points overhere.
Here are my solutions:

Spoiler:

The idea is that, it took a little bit of time and experiment to create the GM. So the queen, with the help of "someone, I still have to decide who probably the red mantis or an alchemist or... lets call him X" started to work on this project way before the king dies. And, as the queen is not stupid, the experimentation was run on "poor material".

I don't see why I should remove the Zellara's head. In fact she was also looking for her daughter, but all she found was Gaedren and her death.

And I don't want the caracters to go after the girl neither. they will probably meet her during the escape from old korvosa or a little bit earlier (I still need to read this parts)So they will find no more clue.

Of course, there is the brooch. But here is the story:

the queen was looking for several way to take control of the city (and more) so she knew she will need military forces, spies, gold and, well, everything you need to build up a new kingdom (see kingmaker for more)
So quite early she setup her plots. She recruited the red mantis, X, and many more. X promised her an army of girls dedicated to the will of the queen. Seduced by the idea she gave him the brooch and told him to get what he needs. X recruited Gaedren who smell a source of easy money.
But the red mantis found what X was about and told the queen that she was too involved and she shoudl'nt leave tracks that could lead to her, so the queen declared the brooch was stolen. Laam heard that and moved his base of activity the the old fishery.

you made me think about this. Thank you !

on the other hand, my players were kind to me .
One took the "missing belloved one" trait. So here is Zaya
One took the harrowed feat (easy to link her to zellara's cards)
one gave his mother the name of croft. So Cressida is a relative.

all those links to bind them to the city.

Hhhmm. Maybe you can expand into an additional side quest:

Spoiler:
I'd rather put a crown-of-fangs and cheliax warlord subplot as the trigger for the GMs - remember the crown is the cause of Ileosa turning eviler than evil. The intrigue of kidnapping girls screams "Cheliax" to me. You might need to add a dungeon to uncover the plot and recovery of the daughter, as is done with other subplots (undead, thugs, etc).

Here's what I did IMC (based on a suggestion on this forum a year or so back):

Spoiler:

I made the Grey Maidens into clones, Imperial Trooper-style. There are only a handful of "originals"; these are young women who had the necessary combination of physical toughness and psychic vulnerability. They became the templates for the clones.

When the PCs met the Grey Maidens, they noticed that each one had a badge and a number -- like, G-17, G-43, and so forth. A bit later, they met some Maidens on patrol; one of these was M-7, and she was noticeably tougher (a mounted variant, Fighter 2/Cavalier 3 IMS). In the final adventure, PCs will meet a bunch of 10th level GMs; these are the O-series, officers. And if they pass through the Queen's private quarters, they'll meet some horribly deformed young women with some strange powers -- the D-series, rejects from the process who the Queen uses as personal servants because that's how she rolls.

So, you could have Zelara's daughter be one such template. Meaning the PCs could meet and "kill" her in module 2, not realizing that they're killing a clone... and then meet her again... and again... and finally, if things go right, rescue the original (who is floating in a tank unconscious somewhere, being copied again and again.)

This would also explain why the Queen would give Lamm a valuable brooch: he's been kidnapping young women for him for a while (it's a natural spinoff from his work of buying and selling children), but this was the first one that was perfect for her plans.

Additional wrinkle: I decided that the process was alchemical, and gave the Queen a loosely-organized band of evil alchemists as allies. I made Dr. Davaulus an alchemist (and he nearly wiped out the party) and some of the plague doctors as well.

Spoiler:
the CHeliax plot is already on the tracks. But it soooo obvious. So I don't know yet if it will be a real one or a dead end.. I'll decide during the following session.

excellent !

isn't Rolth a good choice for the role ?

I like Rolth as just a bad actor who gets swept up by the Queen's machinations. (Note that he has Dim Door, and makes a good recurring villain.) But YMMV; season to taste.

cheers,
