We all do it. Stealing inspiration from a favoured character in a movie, book or comic.
So here's a thread to collect, show off, compare and just plain tell stories of our favourite non original creations. :)

I'll start off with a few that haven't made it into any games yet but may in the next few I GM.

A young Chelaxian noble Summoner whose Eidolon resembles, and acts as, a fiendish butler. - Ciel and Sebastian from Black Butler.

A group of martial arts experts, monks and warriors known for their skills and heroism :
A catfolk monk/fighter who uses Tiger style, a vanara monk/rogue who uses Monkey style, a Vishkraya (sp?) monk who uses Snake style, a white tengu monk who uses Crane style and a Xeph monk/fighter who uses Mantis style.
- the Furious Five from Kung Fu Panda.
I have yet to work out how to build Po.

A Invulnerable/Dragon Totem barbarian who draws on the power of red dragons. Headstrong but indomitable. Also not too bright. I'm trying to work out how I can incorporate Sorcerer into the build without gimping him.
-Natsu Dragoneel from Fairy Tail

A Summoner who has many different Eidolons to call upon.( Currently working on a homebrew archtype that will allow this, maybe getting rid of Summon Monster sla). Also good with a whip.
-Lucy Heartfiller also from Fairy Tail

I have many many more but that's all I can think of right now.
So what have you guys got?

How about a party of 6 catfolk -

A rogue, A fighter, A monk, An oracle, A gunslinger, and a bard, just a very rough sketch. The fighter would be a specialist with the sword, and the oracle would require a way to move at significant speeds. and there you have the Thundercats, roughly (as portrayed in the CN version of the characters).

Though I think my favorite idea would be a LN fighter / wizard bonded to a horned devil (change alingment to chaotic evil) with which he exhanges places, a female Oracle, a female cavalier, an immortal Barbarian, and a Katapeshite Rogue (only real skill-monkey class) - Jason Blood/Etrigan, Madame Xanadu, Ystina - the Shining Knight, Vandal Savage, and I am currently spacing it on the name the scientifically bent arab, and literally anything about the other two main cast members of DC's Demon Knights comic.

Ooh one more.

A Bard-Detective, with a somewhat abrasive yet compelling personality who tackles quests and mysteries , not for reward, but as mental exercise. Knows martial arts, Kirin Style.
-Sherlock Holmes, Robert Downey Jr version.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Po would be a werebear/panda. Probably wouldn't get the +16 Str buff.

You could always look at WoW for inspiration for pandafolk, they have a new race of pandas there now.

==Aelryinth

I have a polearm wielding Sorcerer/Dragon Disciple that I based on Dragon Age 2 version of Flemeth. Conversely, though, my GM and I came up with an original dragon bloodline for her that focuses on necromancy/shadow/illusion.

I also have another DA2 inspired build based on Tallis. She's a Rogue with the Knife Master archetype and all the Dex to damage boosts I could muster.

I have more, but this game has been the most recent media influence on my character building.

I made a squirrel (kerpca) type race- rogue/cleric worship some diety of travel/exporation. Loosly based on Reepicheep from Prince Caspian. That was more of a starting point but the character was a blast.

I made a bandit leader NPC named "Felix the Cat" just thought the name would be funny. The character was a mix of "The Dread Pirate Roberts" from Princess Bride and the super hero "Black Panter." I had a great side quest set up for the PC's and I was hoping our fighter/rogue would take over as the new "Felix the Cat." The party never really bit at the hooks for the side quest.

My current Inquisitor is based on the song Ænima by tool, I honestly try not to base my characters specifically on someone from another media.

Dear Natan Linggod 972,

I can see you're a nerd just like me! Just one question, why can't Natsu be a Brass Dragon Sorcerer/Dragon Disciple?

That said, I always thought that a Beast Totem Barbarian would make a great Wolverine.

An Oracle of Bones would make Faust VIII.

Yosemite Sam is a Gunslinger, Probably Gnome...

4 Were-Turtle/Half-Orc Ninjas, one with Temple swords, one with sais, one with a quarterstaff, and one with Nunchakus. Color co-ordinated, of course.

Brownie points for who ever can come up with Bo-bobo.

Even better a Bard Detective who looks like the average serf. He appears to be deficient at solving crime effectively lowering the guard of his suspects. Through keen observation of humanoid behavior he deduces the crime. In the end he tricks the guilty party in to admitting their crime through a series of questions that obfuscate his intentions.

What about a Tiefling ranger with the natural weapon combat style, amazing at acrobatics, the scent ability and wears a red kimono that gives him a natural armour bonus and immunity to fire - Inuyasha from.....what else.....Inuyasha!

@Tirq: I went with Red simply because Igneel was red. And Natsu's nickname was Salamander which brings the colour red to my mind.

Given Yosemite's temper and luxurious facial hair, I would have thought dwarf...

Some more of mine;

A rogue with a the exploding thrown weapon ninja trick, I forget what it's called. - Gambit from X-men.

A vivisectionist/chirurgeon Alchemist, when not on a mission he spends his time working as a healer. Prefers missions where he can right some injustice. - Black Jack from the anime

Funny, I made but am yet to play a Tien Martial artist, who is a tiny slip of a girl, very acrobatic, literally moving around between every kick, or punch. When she does flurry of blows her legs move so quickly it's just like a blur.

Her name is Li Chun.

A huge bunch of warforged druids using wildshape, fighting against a similar bunch... :-)

They really need a "stinky cheese" warning label on some of these threads.
Or some sort of rating scale.
ooh that thread has four Limburgers, I think i'll pass.

@Sissyl: *facepalm* I can't believe I forgot about that! We've been making Transformer jokes about druids ever since warforged were introduced....

@ralantar: What's wrong with Limburger? I like strong cheeses...

Some more.
LG monk(martial artist)/bard(detective) with a bat theme.

Oh a friend of mine once GMed a game where the main enemies were all based on characters from Winnie the Pooh...The players didn't realise till the third or fourth session...

A cowardly wizard1/rogueX (or possibly bard(magician?)) with a Helpful Chest homonculus.
-Rincewind from Discworld

A stern, grumpy yet righteous old witch who avoids using actual magic when Bluff, Diplomacy and Intimidate will do. (Mostly Intimidate)
- Granny Weatherwax from Discworld.

A bladebound Magus with a penchant for necromantic and cold based spells.
- The lich king Arthas for warcraft.

Going back to 3rd ed: A LG psychic warrior elan whose powers were almost exclusively about boosting his physical abilities or giving him new ones. Wore blue armour with a red cloak.
- Superman

An LE artificer with megalomania who used all his crafting ability on his full plate suit of armour.
Althernatively a CG artificer with authority issues who did the same.
-DR Doom and Iron Man.

LN warforged Holy Gun Paladin.
- Robocop. "Undead or alive, you're coming with me"

Wow I would absolutely love to know how that works??

Does he have a spell that gives people the ability to swim? Hahah... seriously, though, you have piqued my interest. How is he built?

Well,I usually dm, but here's a few I'm considering for NPCs:

-LG sorcerer with the starsoul bloodline and spells known consisting of telekinesis, various conjuration (creation) and force spells- Green Lantern

-Aristocrat/Alchemist with Craft Wondrous Item and high social skills- Thomas Edison- who is in a corporate war with my analogue of Tesla over the development of the predominant magical energy that serves as the primary energy source for my steampunk homebrew.

-An adventuring party based on how the Three Stooges operate in the episode where Curly becomes a boxing champ (flying into a terrible berserker rage when Larry plays "Pop goes the Weasel"). Curly's a barbarian (with perhaps one or two levels in rogue) and Larry's a pure bard who plays his Stradivarius to Inspire Courage and the like. Moe's likely gonna be a rogue/fighter with the dirty trick feat tree and serves as kinda the 'boss' of the group.

Not a major PC, but I've been revamping one of the characters in a family of drow from his original concept as a monk to a ninja whose training lead to developing a martial arts style inspired by kytons(evangelist).

Aside from shadowstepping to get behind people, there's been the occasional flinging of a spike attached to a chain, in order to tell someone 'get over here'.

He's a follower of Groetus and he's built for whacking people with his heavy flail, I play him as someone who basically looks at the world as there's no reason for saving because it's all going to end once his god gets here anyway. The only reason he's doing what he's doing is because he owes King Estrid his life, and she commanded him to find out why the giants have started massing an army. (He joined about the group about halfway through RotRl after my fighter got turned into chunky salsa.)

How about a shy bumbling Wizard-Scroll Master Archetype in glasses who is really an agent for an underworld society specializing in acquisition of knowledge by any means necessary... (come on, she has got to be why they made that archetype to begin with).

Yomiko Readman from Read or Die. This AMV summarizes some of her abilities, don't mind the pop music. And yes, that is a sword made of dollar bills.

If you pass simply because it happens to be a cartoon made in Japan, you're missing out. The series is very different from most other anime I've seen--in fact, in fact, it's largely an homage to a lot of Western action style series, such as James Bond and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

If the idea of a world that's basically James Bond meets X-Men, with loads of literary references, and the hero is a superpowered bibliomaniac, appeals to you, then I highly recommend it. If you do not like superhero stories or spy stories or action stories or stories with strong women as the heroes, then by all means, pass it by. But please have enough discernment not to pass it over simply because it happens to be drawn (easiest way to do the special effects for the powers they depict in the series) or from another country.

+1 Thanks for the heads up on this anime. Gonna check it out asap.

Anime Rant:
Not all anime is like Naruto or Sailor Moon (not that there is anything wrong with them). There are different kinds, just like American cartoons and comics. Look at Avatar: The Last Airbender as compared to something like CatDog. Two completely different kinds of cartoons produced for the same kids TV network. Batman: The Animated Series is arguably the greatest cartoon of all time.

So when people ask me if I like cartoons, I say yeah. No, I don't watch The Backyardigans (unless I'm babysitting my girlfriend's little cousin). People ask if I like anime, I say yeah, but only stuff like Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist.

When people ask if you read books, do they sneer at you and tell you vampires don't sparkle?

I don't avoid anime because it's from Japan I avoid anime because I have yet to find one which as an animation style I don't find terribad.

A bard based on Dudley Moores charachter in "Arthur" (surprisingly effective and fun to play:)
And a fighter/wizard based on "Evil Ernie" (killed in his first encounter, mourned by no one:)

The Emperor would be NE, Vader on the other hand...

ninja/monk Willikins, Vimses Butler from Discworld novels
a gentlemans gentleman with a somber past.

Palpatine does show some NE tendencies, but he demands absolute, unwavering loyalty from his subjects, and his legions of stormtroopers are the epitome of martial lawfulness. I would say he would mostly likely be Lawful Evil.

I would say Wilikins would be a rogue maybe with a level of fighter(cad). He's never shown any inclination toward mysticism that the ninja or monk would indicate.

@drenier The reason being that he's had so many different writers who all portray him differently. There is no single batman. (just watch this will get me flamed :P )

graveknight monk/sorrcer Alphonse from FMA brotherhood
Magus with intelligent sword Belgarian from the belgariad.

I have a build for a half orc Sorc/Barb/Dragon Disciple that could wrestle a Balor to the ground at 20. I'll find it if you're interested, although I don't know this Natsu character. It might be helpful though.

And for my two cents I'd like to suggest a Bard/rogue with perform:sing and profession:barber, lost love (widowed). We have Sweeny Todd.

An elven Alchemist tih pale kin ruby lips and green hair, He has a meniacal laugh and perfers to wear purple and green, He loves poison and gassing people with his many bombs and weapons he has two faithful Dire hyneas, a hot yet deadly jester dressed companion, and on occasion gets fits of superior strength or nimbleness.... He is my version of the Joker, and is quite fun

I apologize for the errors I just got off work and my brain hurts

I'm currently working on a gnome bard with a human Phaninx Fighter mount. It's very roughly based on the characters from The Mighty. I mean very roughly. The rest of the inspiration is from Bioshock. The mount will be wearing a Big Daddy Suit.

I ran a game for a couple friends, one of which had never played before.

He rolled a Fighter named Kurgan.

Another player rolled a Bard named Morrow, patterning him off of the Wheel of Time's Thom Merrilin.

Any ideas on how to pull off Albert Wesker? I figure Alchemist would be a good place to start, but I also figure there's got to be a high Charisma theme there, too (maybe cavalier?). The man has presence and authority about him.

Silver Crusade

Scout, Demoman, and Heavy have forced themselves into my NPC folder more than once.

Cripes, Scout hijacked my PC in a friend's Savage World Airbender game.

Ignoring the character changes brought on by RE5(and keeping him purely as a magnificent bastard-type), maybe something with monk levels abusing Abundant Step to emulate how the guy tends to jump about the battlefield. Guy needs to hit like a truck, but he also needs to do it with style.

It's worth noting that he always uses the same exact gun he had in the very first game. Just a nice handgun. Maybe giving him some deceptively mundane signature weapon that he can put to unexpectedly deadly use might be worth looking into.

I've been wanting to play an LG monk who's permenently blind as a homage to Zatoichi. No special dispensation, just voluntarily blind. Weapon master and a boatload of reroll and blind fight feats. Maybe Quingong to work in Darkness and Deeper Darkness.
