World's Largest Dungeon anyone?

3.5/d20/OGL

Me and my home group are going to be starting this soon, and I am wondering if anyone has advice for me, (Going to be the DM) or my players. In particular I am wondering how you have handled conjuration and teleportation magic? Do you just hand-wave it and ignore the logic issue, or do you follow the suggestions given in the book

trying not to give too many spoilers

Also, how did you deal with level ups and rest? It seems like there are only a handful of safe places to rest and that those rooms are not really clearly different than others. My concern is that my PC's will be wandering forever trying to find a place to end the session for the night. (I like to end my sessions at a logical junction. )

So, any tips from the pros?

Don't run it? (joking) Part of the challenge with being in a giant dungeon is not knowing where is a safe place to camp. Smart decisions and extra precautions on their part should be the norm on resting.

As for the Teleportation, if you have an issue with it just remove it from the game, but inform the group ahead of time about that decision.
If they don't mind being trapped in an endless dungeon for most of their career then pretty much do what you need to to make it fun without being too heavy-handed.

I think there are some good tips available in Velcro Zipper's very detailed campaign journal:

Velcro Zipper presents AEG's - The World's Largest Dungeon!

For instance, I think he made some of the monster tribes more amenable to co-operating with the PCs, which removes some of the "us vs. everything else" problem.

Thanks for the plug, Balthzar. That was super-keen.

I was just going to humbly suggest Magnu123 check out my journal. I've interspersed the journal entries with explanations for how I've managed some of the intricacies of the Dungeon and tried to offer some helpful advice for GMs who give it a shot. Page 5 has a Region-by-Region breakdown of some of the things I've done with the areas visited by my party. Your group or style might not mesh with what I've done, but I hope you'll find some it useful.

The WLD does have its share of flaws. The maps aren't always right and there a ton of typos and grammatical errors so make sure you read ahead and give yourself plenty of time to patch any holes you find.

Thanks guys. I'll make sure I check out your notes, VZ. Happy Holidays everyone!

We're playing this at the moment, tied directly into The World's Largest City. The DM is handling the teleportation magic pretty strict; it doesn't work according to him, so we don't mess with any spells that do it.

We used to just level up wherever we happened to be at the time, although now with the City tie-in, he has us go to our respective guilds and get officially "ranked up" or whatnot.

And rest? Resting in the dungeon can be an adventure in and of itself. Random encounters galore.

We played through it for a few levels but then got bored of it. It might of just been our GM but it just seemed like a lot of combat and that the next door could be an encounter several levels too high for us. I'm sure with the right GM is could be better.

Thanks guys. Was cruising and saw this thread, and have my own copy of WLD and WLC. Will definitely be checking that journal out when I get a chance, having flipped through WLD and having had some concerns ...

VERY cool to have an offering for others in the community on running this/handling its idiosyncracies! I will be sure to plug it as well!

Just wanted to mention that we had our first session on Thursday. It went well. We have a party of four: A dwarf bard, A dwarf monk, A human ninja, and a human wizard. All things went fairly smoothly, but when they rested, they sealed off a room. The way my random encounter rolls went, most of the baddies just sat outside the room trying to get in. At the end of the night, the PC's decided to launch an offensive against a random encounter. Unfortunately, that resulted in 3 out of 4 PC's unconscious, and the Wizard left running away to find help. The opponents in the encounter dragged away the unusual dwarf bard. In short, so far we have had: 1 death
3 knock-outs.

I wouldn't mind hearing more about how your campaign goes. Even if they're just short updates, you should post on the Campaign Journals board. It might be useful for me to compare notes.
