Just figured out that you replaced the "add new post" link to a quick reply box at the bottom of the forums. That is interesting...
Im not sure if anyone there is aware of it, but whenever you click on the "show" button for the forum coding, the help area is hiding out behind the buttom of the webpage file path...

Not sure what you mean by "help area is hiding out"—can you email a screenshot to webmaster@paizo.com?

By the way, since the "reply" option includes quotes, that's not a great alternative to the old "add new post" option. Any chance you could keep the "add new post" option despite having added the "quick reply" option?
"Add new post" is the quick reply box. It gives you a blank box to type in at the bottom of the thread.

It is a bit smaller. The old size is there if you click reply or preview your post.
Newer browsers let you expand as needed with a little icon in the corner.
Never realized that it was possible to resize the text area like that — neat trick. Is there a way to force the browser to remember the size I prefer, or is that something I could specify via the style sheet overrides I use (i.e. Stylish extension)?
As for a regular reply button, frequently that's desirable in a PbP situation so that you can see the preceding posts when authoring a new reply. If you are at the start of a brand new page, then just typing away without being able to see much of the recent history could be annoying. (Although I'm assuming it would appear if one clicked the Preview button.)

I think you missed your answer FangDelicious...
I like it. It will cut down the amount of time spent loading pages when playing PBP heaps. Thankyou =D

Thanks, I even went through the thread to see if anyone else had posted the same issue and I missed it. :(

No, the quick reply box isn't the same as the old "add new post" option.
So far, its behavior (seemingly being much slower than before when others have posted between the time I start typing until I'm ready to finish the post, with multiple previews with dice-rolls in-between) means I'd much rather use the old option than the quick-reply when posting large PBP-posts.
It's not a big deal, though. I suppose I'll just have to begin using the "reply" option and delete all the quoted text.

Every single time I've used the quick-reply box when posting to my PBP-game today, letters don't appear instantly when I type. When using the "reply" option instead, typing is instant.
While the code is the same, the number of posts shown on the page isn't (the "add new post" option used to only show the last 10 or so, while with "quick-reply" all posts on the page are shown). Perhaps it has something to do with the size of the page, or the number of posts in the thread, because this behavior doesn't exist on any of the other threads I've tested on (like this one).
It could of course be that the problem is on my end. Either way, since it's visibly slower, it's not illusory.

It doesn't observe my default alias. Default posts as my main account.

And so we observe the drawback of quick-reply posting... people will jump the gun a lot more often...
Thanks, sm.

Ah OK, I thought you were referring to the speed of processing the submitted post, not the browser's speed at rendering your keystrokes. That is weird, we aren't doing anything fancy on the browser side during typing at all.
The length of the page must have been the culprit, because now that the thread has reached a new page the typing is back to normal speed also in the quick-reply post.
However, a new problem has replaced it: The automatic increase of the box-space for the quick-reply causes the bottom half to disappear, which means I can't see any of the buttons to post or preview. I'm guessing that's an IE8 issue?

I'm guessing it's an IE8 thing as someone else was having a problem with the IE8 expansion with the how to format your text button not expanding and floating afterwards. I'll try to puzzle out what the problem is specifically and see if we can fix it or if that's just going to be a problem with IE8.
Lissa Guillet |
Confirmed this just now. Turns out, IE8 specifically broke this behavior for some reason. Setting it to compatibility mode will fix it temporarily but that has it's own issues as IE7 is not the best way to view the site. This has to do with the way it handles floated material specifically I believe. I'll see if I can find a work around.

There is no quick-reply box on pages that are "full" (i.e., threads that are at multiples of fifty posts). The only way to add a new post is to Reply. This thread is an example, although it may have more than 50 posts by the time you see this....
Lissa Guillet |
So figured out what the problem was. Once something is made inline or float in ie8 it leaves the flow as far as it's container is concerned and if it expands then the container won't expand with it. I can make it work but requires a javascript change that's a little more involved than a line change. For the record, IE7,firefox,opera,safari, and chrome all handle this perfectly fine.
Should have a fix fairly soon. Not sure if it will go in immediately or when other adjustments are made.

I've found a rather lame and annoying side effect of the quick reply which I *hope* was accidental:
On a page that has reached 50 posts, you're no longer able to see the links to various other sections of the messageboards, which combined with them not being at the top of them any more(at least my PbPs) means its a bit of a hassel to get to a specific subforum.
Ex: right now, I see links to Paizo/Messageboards/Paizo.com/Website Feedback/The Quick Reply Option, but when your on a page that has 50 posts, those links go away.

Turns out we have a bunch of specialized code for handling the alias menu in campaign threads that I'd forgotten I wrote, so forgot to test. I think that code should be working again for the quick reply box.
I think I've also fixed the problem where the quick reply box doesn't show up if a thread has an exact multiple of 50 posts.

Even though the default posting name works for me now, I'm getting the horrible red text telling me that I've made '0' posts as my account name (which I don't, and never have, posted as) and have the option to change it, etc... at the top of every quick reply box. It's telling me if I do not wich to change my avatar name then I can ignore the message... but it's darned hard to ignore when it's there in bright red letters every time! ;)
I'm also getting the thing (which I think is the same as mentioned by another poster above) where, as soon as I click inside the quick reply text box, the box extends and the actual buttons to post anything vanish. Clicking around randomly off the text box for a while eventually shifts stuff around and brings them back, but it's not nice.

Sorry, Gary; no quick-reply on this thread.

These two bugs should be fixed later today.
