Racially (culturally) based class archetypes in ARG?

Advanced Race Guide Playtest

This has probably been discussed before but what about class archetypes for the various races? Different races have different cultures and class archetypes seem like a handy way to represent different cultures. I got the idea looking at the Dervish Dancer, Geisha, Ninja, Samurai, etc.

I dunno. What do you think? Would this be a good addition to the ARG?

That would be awesome! Though I think that Mr. Jacobs says that they are almost tapped out on archetypes. Maybe they will have some Prestige Classes for us!

That would be cool too. It just seems like right now there's nothing to differentiate the cultures. Sure they have the favored class options for different races in the APG but it's not really enough to make them distinct imo. Seems to me they should have entirely different ways of training and right now other then ability modifiers (which don't mean much in point buy) an elven fighter is the same as a dwarven fighter is the same as a halfling fighter pretty much. : /

I think racial archetypes are an awesome idea. I suggested them on the ARG wishlist forum. I think there are several classes with which some races would have their own unique style. Like Elven Wizard, Halfling Rogue, or Dwarven Fighter archetypes. Sure, these are stereotypes, but I just think the devs could really have some fun with these and give them a flavor unique to their race. And if they don't, then maybe I'll try some homebrews...but I'd prefer they did them.

personally i think racial archetypes would be awesome, prestige classes i'm torn on. (arcane archer I'm looking at you)

i think a more generic "how-to" template for prestige classes would be awesome too

something like gain bab as a creature of your type, improved racial abilities, ect.

in 3.5 there were paragon classes of 3-5 levels for people who couldn't decide what class to take but were sure about the race. I hope there will be something like that again.

I wouldn't mind seeing prestige classes that rely on unique biology (such as a dwarf expanding stonesense into a mystic martial art akin to earthbending in Avatar: The Last Airbender) but prestige classes based on culture alone grate on me. I always hated that arcane archer was elf only, as if something inherent in elf biology made them able to do magic bow tricks. I prefer that even if it's a martial art practiced primarily by a single race, it not be restricted by race. It's better to leave it unrestricted and just note in its fluff that its members are almost exclusively of that race.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Maybe instead of the race being a requirement, the specific race ability was the requirement? Like with your example the requirement wouldn't be Dwarf, it would be Stone Sense. That way any race with that similar bit of biology could enter the class and even other races if there's any way for a human to get stone sense, for instance.

I really like this idea, it has a lot of potential, especially with the race building rules. A few feats could also be steered in this direction.

I'm hoping for some more alternate favored class features, especially for the new classes.

Ya know I'd hate to rain on anybodies parade but......... If you don't limit the options to be race specific then there is no reason to put them in a "Advanced Race Guide".

actually something along the lines of

"Bestial fighter" archetype
must be x,y,or z type or subtype.

ability (replace bravery with something)

trade weapon training for natural attack (claw, slam, ect). if you have a natural attack increase its damage 1 size.

trade w train 2 for ability to make iterative attack with 1 primary natural weapon. [so bite, bite at -5 or claw(h1) claw(h1) at -5 claw(h2)]

trade 4 for teritary attack, or 2nd attack with other primary weapon (so you could bite bite-5 bite-10 with one mouth or claw(h1) claw(h1)-5 and claw(h2) claw (h2)-5

trade weapon training 3 for bonus to 2 stats

trade armor training 1 fro a point of NA

trade armor training 2 for ???

Trade armor training 3 for large size

and trade a few feats for a "racial paragon" ability

Dark Archive

basically the 3.5 options of racial substitution levels with racial paragon class built in

Tapped out of Archetypes they have got to be kidding. They only have one or three for there setting, and the wizard currently plenty of room for archetypes. Not to mention Racial Archetypes are a great idea!!!!

That would help support my concept of NO ELVEN ALDORI SWORDLORDS cause it does not fit thematically!!!! However a similiar archetype that used the Elven Curve Blade would be nice.

Grand Lodge

Maybe it was just on the generic front. I think he said they are coming up with a few for the setting, but he was pretty clear that HE was happy with what they had so far. Though, I think he should weigh in, because I really don't like putting words in his mouth, especially if I am misinterpreting what he said.

EDIT: That was a run-on sentence... Whew! :p

Grand Lodge

Just read the description closely and there indeed WILL be a few racial archetypes. :)

Yea, I thought it's been confirmed for a while that there'll be them.
