Thanks for the feedback everyone. The kind words and the constructive criticism are both welcome. I'll do my best to take all of it on board.

I'm gonna resist the urge to write specific responses though, because I don't wanna risk derailing the thread.

I am sorry I wasn't able to run a better game for you guys. My ego insists I tell everyone that I really am a better GM than that session suggests. Egos are notorious liars though, so I'm not sure anyone should believe him.

You folks are a great group of gamers. Here's the the Asheville Lodge's continued growth and success.

Now, one of you lot hurry up and win the lottery so we can quit worrying about having a place to meet every time.

Sovereign Court

Luthril,

As you have the best connection to BPBX, I would say if you can do so for the 18th, I (and I am certain everyone else as well) would be most grateful.

For the 4th, yes, it looks like it would be WC, unless anyone can locate a good alternative. Keep your eyes and ears open for alternate locations folks! ;)

And well said re: GM interpretation.

EDIT:

I tried! We just need to get those lottery people to pick my numbers next time! ;)

Well spoken, Luthril

Silver Crusade 5/5

Curious about purchasing Weapons/Armor for new character... I think I know the answer to this but... Just the Core Rulebook items or any Pathfinder book we have ie APG, Ult Combat ect?

I'll error on the side of "just Core Rulebook" til I hear different.

From the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play:

Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play wrote:

Every player who completes a scenario receives a set amount of gold for the scenario that she may then spend to acquire items (either from her collected Chronicle sheets, from the Core Rulebook, or from an approved Additional Resource).

And you can find a list of approved Additional Resources here.

And as an FYI

For the 4th

I am planning on running scenario 02-01 Before the Dawn Part I: The Bloodcove Disguise (it has Tiers 1-2, 3-4 and 6-7).

Silver Crusade 5/5

Thank you Dain!

Nodachi for my next Barbarian... I think so!

Nansen, if you haven't seen it already, I'd like to point out a further example of me making an unmitigated ass of myself in a related thread. Dink also makes a very valuable observation here that I agree with wholeheartedly.

The Exchange 2/5

Hey Nansen, fantastic session. I'm looking forward to the next time you GM, and I'll be sure to listen if you caution against playing up.

That sounds great! I love playing multi-part sessions in order! I'm really looking forward to the 4th, despite the venue. Hopefully BPBX will work out better, but I really think that B&N off of Tunnel may be a good option. Maybe we try it for March 3rd? I'd be happy to do the legwork and try and set it up.

Silver Crusade 5/5

I can hit up B&N today for THIS weekend... I'll hit them up after doctors appointment. we can always just not show up there if you all hate that venue... thanks for the idea Thoryn.

WE'd need to start on time (trembles in fear) because i remember back in this thread they will straight boots us at closing.

Peace,
Luth

Silver Crusade 5/5

Ok Back.

Paul/Dink et all. here is the 411 on Barnes & Nobles...

Spoke with Susan Lily (Community Relations Manager) at B&N.

She said that their study area (large seating area upstairs) is always first come first serve and isn't usually busy on a Saturday night. So that is one possibility, but....

I asked about setting up tables and chairs in a big unused corner over near the gaming books (would easily accommodate 2 tables of 6 or more)and she said she'd consider it but wanted us to email her as much info about the group as possible so she could get it cleared by higher ups. (she is a gamer fan, watches big bang theory and has a crush on Sheldon Cooper :) HA!) She wants #'s of people, our schedule, start and finish times and anything else we can send her. Official Paizo stuff would help. I stressed that we are affiliated with Paizo and that they sell those books and this should help drive sales as lurkers and gawkers may pick up books and also our guys will probably buy books too. I'll email you her email address to your pen&paper account and a copy of all this.

So in short I think WC is still our best bet for Saturday, but now we have two good candidates (BPBX, B&N) for the 18th.

Chemo tomorrow so anymore recon done this week will have to be another AsheVillian :)

Honorably your Paladin,
LUTH

Scarab Sages 1/5

Nice work, man! I was actually just talking about the study area they've got setup there, rather than cause a corporate fuss. I think that might work out. Wi-Fi, coffee/snacks, and Pathfinder Books? Now we're talking.

One concern is bringing game books in and out and not looking like shoplifters. I'll check in to that.

Exactly the point I was trying to make, I’m glad someone understands. Thanks!

Thou, Gary Gygax said it best! May he rest in peace.

On another note: As a GM/DM of many years... It is for the Gamemaster to interpret and where needed bend rules, but never break them. It is not appropriate for players to ever do so... even in homebrew, that's why it's called cheating - it give you an unbalanced advantage. You can be given help by the GM, but shouldn't solicit(it put's us in a pretty rough place).

How many players do we have room for on the 4th? In any case, count me in for Before the Dawn and sequel!

Grand Lodge 5/5 * Venture-Captain, New Zealand—Dunedin

I'm planning on running Part 2 of the Quest for Perfection series. Just to let folks know.....I guess I should create the event in the PFS forum.

I'd like to get in on that table. Dink, I'd love to get in on your table eventually, but I'd like to play the sessions in order, and I missed the first one. AVL PFS GMs Rock!

Silver Crusade 5/5

I guess I need to roll with Dain's group as well as I don't want to run the scenario's out of order. Dragan the Dwarf will be ready to rock. I'll get there at 5pm and if we can get rolling right at 6pm I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks for all you do Dinkmeister, let me know what Susan says about B&N and whatnot.

Scarab Sages 4/5

I just confirmed SCARAB's attendance at StellarCon in March. I will be bringing 12 tables of PFS to this super fun event. If anyone is interested in GM-ing at this event let me know ASAP! GM-ing at this event will cover your scenarios for you, you will not have to be out of pocket on them.

Dark Archive 2/5

Sweet i will go in whatever group needs a fighter i have played all of those ( killed 13 in one weekend) and FMI where is StellarCon?

Scarab Sages 4/5

I posted it in the calendar HERE and I WILL be running the brand new Special that only 4 Stars and VC/VL can run!!!

#3-EX: The Cyphermage Dilemma

Scarab Sages

I will be there on the 4th, for any one wo needs a roque.

Question:

Do we count the weight on our clothing to our encumbrance limits?

For example. A Traveler's outfit weighs 5 lb. Do I count this weight to determine my total encumbrance?

John

Liberty's Edge

I should be able to be there on the 4th! I just need this 1 game to get my alchemist to lvl 2! no more blowing up my own team!
Just tell me which team needs me when I get there
I'll also bring along the tank and the cleric, in case they're needed

Yep, clothing counts towards your encumbrance.

hey does anybody know wtf Crushing Embrace feat does?

Silver Crusade 5/5

Doesn't seem to be a Pathfinder Feat... Not in Herolab and only reference to it on the SRD is to say it is not a legal feat and gives a substitute Stunning Pin.

Hope that helps,
Luth

Dark Archive 2/5

ok thanks it was a bonus feat for a monk archetype I wanted to play

I'm gonna mention something here for the benefit of everyone in the Lodge. I'd hate for folks to see you replaying, and not realize until too late the full implications of replaying a scenario.

When you replay a scenario in Pathfinder Society, you do not gain a Chronicle for the replay. That means no gold, XP, or Prestige is received. This is on a per player basis, not per character.

Put another way, a player can only play a scenario one time for credit.

A player replaying a scenario is also supposed to inform the GM. The GM has the option of disallowing a player who has previously played the scenario from playing.

Tier 1 scenarios allow infinite replays for credit, though currently the First Steps Trilogy are the only Tier 1 scenarios Pathfinder Society offers.

The exact text of the Replay rules are on page 16 of the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play.

There is also a sentence in the Guide which could be interpreted to mean that replay is only allowed in order to meet the minimum number of players for a table.

Grand Lodge 5/5 * Venture-Captain, New Zealand—Dunedin

Thanks for the reminder, Nansen!

We are a good Pathfinder Society Law-Abiding Lodge; if you've already played in all the scenarios offered at a specific PFS Lodge meeting, maybe you'd think about RUNNING a scenario?

Hmmm?

You CAN get GM credit for running the scenario that you've already played.

Just an idea.

Always looking for more GMs,
Dink

Scarab Sages 1/5

Any thought to a snappy name for this group? AVL PFS Lodge is alright, but SCARAB has a cool acronym... maybe something like MAPS? Mountain Area Pathfinder Society? That could lend itself to some cool logos. Other ideas?

I'd like to establish a name more like a mercenary company or pirate crew than an acronym... How about "Aravandor's Ashvillians?" I can be the witty and handsome frontman! I love it when a plan comes together!

Or, if you're not into aliteration, maybe we could do "Asheville Pathfinder Enthusiast Society"

Grand Lodge 5/5 * Venture-Captain, New Zealand—Dunedin

APES? Do we get a special dispensation from Paizo to run all Mwangi Province adventures before all other Pathfinder groups?

Just rattling them off here:

the Pathfinder Asheville League of Socialites (PALS)

the League of Asheville Pathfinders: Dice Are Now Cool, Eh? (LAP:DANCE?)

the Council of Real Asheville Pathfinders (CRAP)

the Pathfinder Asheville Group And Nihilists (PAGAN)

the Asheville Area Real Pathfinders (AARP)

the Fellowship of Roleplayers of Asheville Knighthood (FRAK)

Ok, that's enough.

-Dink

Scarab Sages 1/5

I think I'd vote for LAP:DANCE? out of those. Let's see what world coffee thinks of THOSE signs! BWhuhuwhahahahahaaha!

Sovereign Court

Great options there dinketry. :)

As an aside, I will be checking on a possible alternate location after I get done with Real Life stuff (i.e. - work) today. I'll let y'all know what comes of it.

Silver Crusade 4/5

I can GM if someone will bring me a printout of 'Intro I: in service to lore' my printer is out of ink.

I am aware of the rules surrounding replays and was ready to abide by them. I play PFS purely for fun and already have a cuple higher lvl chars. Credit is nice when I can get it but I don't need it.

Dark Archive 2/5

hey Zylphryx i would love to get in on Before the Dawn Part I: The Bloodcove Disguise, and Nansen brought up a valid point i have already played though that one so if you have room and don't mind me tagging along, i would love to play part one again if possible, i don't want anyone that has not played it to miss out so let me know.

Dink...LOL those are priceless...

Question for ya'll...I've done 2 scenarios. Both were basically "you get your assignment and are now standing at the front doors of the bad place". Are all or even most of the PFS scenarios like that. I'm not saying its bad...on the contrary I can see an upside to diving right in. But I'm asking because I'm playing with different character builds and based on my two experiences so far, don't see much use for skills like diplomacy, slight of hand, animal handling to name a few. Are there scenarios that go beyond enter, kill, finish...maybe require the party to ferret out the right tidbit of info from amongst a town populace or some such? Are spells that provide bonuses to social skills worth consideration or a waste of time?

Never underestimate any skill. They can get used at any given time. A good number of scenarios have Knowledge checks at the start. Faction assignments may need you to utilize stealth, diplomacy, intimidation, survival, craft, profession, etc.

And yes, there are scenarios that go beyond the enter/kill/finish model.

Eaghen: trust me diplomacy is critical for a rogue/bard. Some scenarios are very heavy on various non-combat skills. One that comes to mind immediately was web of corruption. In this, the party must uncover a local politician's link to the illicit slave trade. More than half the scenario was sense motive, intimidate, bluff and diplomacy checks to find who is working for whom and what is going on in the back alleys of city politics. Sometimes the skills are more important than the swords.

I've played a few where 'knowledge: local' has come in handy. There are a few scenarios that are more detective work, but you're pretty much always getting into a fight.

Silver Crusade 4/5

I personally find it more rewarding to play a support character in PFS. A key Diplomacy or Knowledge (Local) check can change the whole session. But a BSF is needed in some scenarios and I am very grateful to the ppl that choose to play them. :)

I have found some skills to be more useful then others.

Perception - always the most important skill no mater what kind of play.

Knowledge (Local & religion) - you only need to make a DC 10 to assist so please take training in this.

Diplomacy - You want to avoid a fight, finish that faction mission successfully, or get the information. A party is screwed in most scenarios without a skilled Diplomat.

Acrobatics - I usually don't mess with this but after seeing a Monk use it every other turn I have to admit it is extremely useful, that is if you have the DEX to back it up.

We'll have to see who is there on Saturday. There is a good chance I will have two nephews (or my nephew and his cousin in law ... or my nephew and my sister in law's brother's son ... ah screw it, two nephews) coming to play.

They're both pretty young (10-11 years of age), one of them does have some gaming experience (from the kid's game I run alternating Sundays) and both are pretty psyched about any gaming they can take part in. More than likely they will grab two seats at my table, but we'll see what happens. I am willing to have 5-6 players (though it will most likely bump the group to the 3-4 tier if we run that route ... not as dramatic as hitting that 4-5 tier like 2 weeks ago, but something to be aware of).

Yes, I am helping bring up the next generation of gamers. ;)

Scarab Sages 1/5

Awesome news, man! Its great to have some young players around. They're usually more creative than us old guys anyway...
