Put me down for either Citadel of Flame or the Infernal Vault.

Liberty's Edge

Thanks for the well-wishes, encouragement, and advice.

I played at a 7-player table once. That was my least-fun PFS experience to date. So I really prefer to avoid running a table of 7-players.

zylphyrx, yeah, I gave the Season 0 scenarios a wide berth for that very reason. With Season 1 scenarios, I only have to worry about the differences in the faction mission rules.

Figuring the APL for subtiers confuses me a little. Mostly because the Guide to Organized Play says to round down in the initial explanation, but then in the example says to round up.

QC, okay, that's a half-vote each for Citadel of Flame and Infernal Vault then. :-)

I'm there for a 5pm sharp start time on Saturday.. Thanks for stepping up guys. I find that a two week withdrawal from rpg's causes me to reflexively set fires and eat roofing nails. I'll try to evolve into a grown-up and GM some games soon. I knew with the judicious application of the proper amount of whining the Ashevegas lodge wouldn't let me down in the mean time.

I love all you guys in a fist-bump, buy-you-another-round-of-drinks, let-you-borrow-my-flip-board-mats kind of way.

You do not have to make reservations with the good folks at World Coffee, though I find that getting the names of the baristas on duty helps, as well as arriving at least 30mins earlier to scope spaces and claim tables. Do not put up fliers in the coffee-house; apparently this makes the owner go all 'Gorilla King' on you. I'll work on some business cards for the Asheville Pathvegas Lodge and Lounge (no, that won't be the name on the card).

Cheers to Nansen for getting out the GM hat! That's 4 rotating GMs we've got now! I'm so stoked. We can always use/train/abuse more....(I'm looking at you, Jake and Aravandor, with my googly eyes that focus independently......)

To be honest, it's your choice as a GM if you want to let in a 7th player. At the conventions that we organize we cap the tables at 6 and let a 7th in only if absolutely needed and the GM is ok with it.

Edric Nansen wrote:

Season 0s can be hard to run. Sometimes they're just too hard, and you also have to do calculations like CMB/CMD in the middle of the game. Remember that Mists of Mwangi is already converted to PFRPG though, so you needn't worry about that one!

Edric Nansen wrote:

The guide is a little confusing about this. Basically, it's just average the levels of all the players. If it's .5 and below, round down, if it's above .5, round up. Add 1 if there are 6 or more players. I think the guide was changed to add some parts referencing rounding down only, but it was a mistake.

Hope this helps!

Silver Crusade 5/5

I don't care what we play :). I think from the lack of others chiming in it'll be 4 players and a DM.... Gonna use a new character... either the Barbarian or the horribly OP Transmuter/Archer... such a huge rule loop hole it is sick!!!

Silver Crusade

I'm OK with either Citadel or Vault as well...

Lutheril brings up a good topic...what class is everyone playing? I'm vacillating between playing Eaghen (Pally 1 I played last time) or trying out another...will probably be swayed by what everyone else is bringing.

Okay folks, we have an event... PFS Asheville - "Bonus" Meeting.

I'll be running Citadel of Flame.

As of now we have confirmed players:

Aravandor
Eaghen (bringing a battlemat)
Luthril

with Jake as "possibly".

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.

P.S. Kyle, that information was extremely helpful, thanks.

Dark Archive 2/5

hello all i want to thank everybody for GMing and doing all this stuff keep up the good work

Ocean mage. At level 4 I can summon Dagon from the depths of the sea.

I'll be playing a cleric. Haven't decided on Pharasma or Erastil. I lean toward Pharasma, but I hate being limited to a dagger again (deja vu for a player who usually plays a rogue!)

A level 1 cleric, that is.

Woo-hoo! Now that Sierra Nevada has announced that they're setting up shop in Mills River, it's my sworn duty to get them to sponsor the Asheville Pathfinder Lodge.

Target acquired. Locked on. Free beery swag for all!

Oh, and my plans have cleared up a bit. I will attend this Saturday's PFS meeting. I'll bring a character (gunslinger); I'll also bring a scenario.

Cheers, y'all!

I'm bummed I'm gonna miss this week, but the thing I thought was last weekend is this weekend. Can't wait to hear how it all shakes out. See you guys on the 4th at the Champagne Book Exchange!

Liberty's Edge 2/5

I unfortunately have insufficient wife points to make it on Saturday, but wish you all the best. I'm really pleased to see how active our community is getting- I just hope we don't run out of scenarios at the rate we're going.

Sorry to hear that you can't make it, strange. My advice: be more annoying to your wife. See, I actually gain wife points by giving her Saturday nights free. I just can't figure out why she always gets the pool cleaned while I'm in Asheville...

Good luck with the sponsorship campaign Dink. I can almost taste the frothy TPKs now.

Greetings all,

Meeting place report:

Battery Park Book Exchange is a "no go" for next weekend. Their only space big enough for two tables is already booked. The good news is the manager Emily and I have known each other for over ten years and she looks forward to hosting us in the future, but we'll need to book with more notice (They are popular as hell for private parties)

World Coffee will allow us to use the back room this Saturday. I spoke with what I will call their bouncer for lack of a better word. He was not terribly friendly and laid down the rules for future use. We can only use the very back room, can not be "disruptive", and cannot post anything on the walls... He suggested that last weekend we did all of the above and the owner wasn't happy. I held my tongue and assured him we would be model customers in the future.

Hope this helps.

My 2 cents is we need to continue to look for a landing spot and I'm happy to scope out anywhere you guys suggest.

Peace,
Luth

Interesting point StrangePackage brings up...running out of PFS-approved scenarios...especially considering I'll play through 8 of them in one weekend at Con Nooga.

My thinking is this...if you throw out season 0, then between seasons 1-3 and sanctioned modules, there are 98 scenarios currently existing. At some point, I'll most likely be GM'ing and able to go back through (and get character credit and another scenario sheet for) each and every one. So there's no way I'm going to plow my way through all that in less than several years, by which time, there will be several more seasons existing. So I'm not particularly worried about running out any time soon.

I did find myself wondering how many of these scenarios all of you have run through, though. And that got me thinking many of ya'll probably have advanced characters you'd like to run sometimes. And that in turn led to another thought...getting long-winded, I know but hang with me here :)

I've only been to one meeting...not exacty a large sample population,I know...but there were nearly enough people for 3 tables, everyone running 1st or 2nd level chaacters. We seem to be focused on growing (fliers, cards, etc...hell I have a cousin who lives south of Greenville I'm going to invite), so it doesn't seem a stretch to think we may very well regularly run at least 3 tables heading into the near future, again with most folks only having 1st or maybe 2nd level characters.

Which brings us to the point (and the crowd goes wild). We're going to need more GMs....double what we already have. If we only have 4 GMs currently, and we're running 3 tables, the math says (keep me straight here Jake) GM'ing 3 of every 4 meetings (and that assumes 100 percent attendance by all). If all you GM's want to do that then great, but I'd imagine it more likely you'd like to run your advanced characters through higher level scenarios from time to time...which one of you would have to GM anyway as things stand right now! I noticed Dink's excitement about having a 4th GM and I think it bears my reasoning out.

To my way of thinking, 8 GMs means nobody has to GM more than around half the time, unless they want to. Which brings me to the ultimate purpose of this post. I'd appreciate some recommendations on how best to quickly navigate the learning curve from player-only to GM-capable. I just bought the Penumbral Accords module...went through it as a player last week, it is still fresh in my mind, so I'll read through it now from a GM perspective. Any other suggestions? I have no illusions that I'll make the curve in anything less than a few months, but no reason not to get started now.

Most of us are pretty new. I don't think anybody in the AVL lodge has a character over 4th. The level cap is at 12th for PFS. I wouldn't mind trying my hand at GMing too, but I'd like to get more familiar with the ins and outs of Pathfinder before I do.

As far as suggestions, I'm trying to learn the Core rules, Advanced Players Guide rules, and the guide to organized play backwards and forwards. I think if we keep the momentum up and find a decent host, we'll have a really vibrant lodge!

There are a few of us that have higher lvl characters but I know Stu and I really don't mind playing lower lvl stuff as it lets us try out new Class.

As for GMing all it really takes is a good understanding of the rules and the courage and patience to deal with a group of gamers. It is a really rewarding experience and if done right you should receive the respect of your fellow nerds. Seeing the game from a GM's perspective gives you an appreciation of the rules and as a result makes you a better player. Don't be intimidated by the GMs that do voices and dance around (Dink) you mearly need to present the story and give your players a good idea of what is happening.

a few people that will guest GM once every two-three months or so wills give our regular GMs significant help having

So all that to say try it out. I will be trying it out for the first time using the Pathfinder rules soon.

Well ... the "very back room" (which I am assuming was the area the group I played with was in) is good for one group ... two would be overly crowded.

Posting things on the walls ... yes, OK, there was the sign for the Pathfinder folks on the door to the back area (which I would not have located without it). Valid point there.

Disruptive? Unless having 4-5 folks heading up to get coffee and snacks is disruptive, I have no clue.

Ah well, such is life, I suppose, but finding a more gamer friendly spot (with later hours) would be a good idea. I'll be keeping my eyes out and ears to the ground.

Luth, thanks for your efforts. It does sound like we might be wearing out our welcome at World Coffee.

Dink, glad you're gonna be able to make it this week. One of the reasons I wanted to GM was to give the folks who've been GMing a chance to play as well.

As Zylphryx points out, if we're limited to the one area at World Coffee, we're also probably limited to one group. With that in mind, confirmed players for Saturday are now:

Aravandor
Dinketry
Eaghen (bringing a battlemat)

I don't wanna be a bad guy here, but I only plan to take 6 players. So if both of you guys who are "possibly" show up, unfortunately only one of you will get to play.

DevotedKnight,

The information you seek is in this thread. It's also in the event listing. I linked to that listing in the post which you quoted above.

Since links on this messageboard can be difficult to discern until you get used to looking for the blue text, here is the link again: PFS Asheville - "Bonus" Meeting.

Stu, looking back, I see I wasn't clear how I was handling "maybe"s. I'm sorry if my lack of clarity has led to any disappointment. If anyone drops out before Saturday, you have the first chance at their slot.

MOST AMAZING 1ST LEVEL SPELL!! this is in the APG... makes a longbow a ranged greatsword.... OMG discuss

Gravity Bow
School transmutation; Level ranger 1, sorcerer/wizard 1
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range personal
Target you
Duration 1 minute/level (D)
Gravity bow significantly increases the weight and density of
arrows or bolts fired from your bow or crossbow the instant
before they strike their target and then return them to normal
a few moments later. Any arrow fired from a bow or crossbow
you are carrying when the spell is cast deals damage as if one
size larger than it actually is. For instance, an arrow fired from
a Medium longbow normally deals 1d8 points of damage,
but it would instead deal 2d6 points of damage if fired from
a gravity bow (see page 145 of the Core Rulebook for more
information). Only you can benefit from this spell. If anyone
else uses your bow to make an attack the arrows deal damage
as normal for their size.

Sovereign Court

Luthril wrote:

Yeah, that is a nice one. Makes wizards somewhat decent in a combat at low level (as long as they have decent dex and the combat doesn't go on for more than 10 rounds). Couple it with true strike and POW! the baddy looks at the wizard as a threat ... which may not be a good thing. ;)

Herolab is so fun... I've made so many sweet characters it is hard to decide what to play... I highly recommend the software because it allows you to create and update characters with ease and keeps you honest on rules and stats and whatnot. very fun.

I'm still on for Saturday world coffee in the back room at 5 sharp. Playing a lvl 1 cleric of Erastil. (Longbow FTW). I'm much obliged to you Nansen for stepping up to the GM plate. I'll see you all there. You guys help me remain sane.

Saying "you're welcome" fells wrong, since I've enjoyed (and learned a lot) just in prepping for the game, running the signups, and entering the event into the system. I've gamed with most of you guys already, and based on that alone I'm expecting this to be a fun session for me as GM.

So instead of saying "you're welcome", I'm gonna say "thanks" to you guys for the chance to GM.

Have a good week people,

I would also like to say, thanks for GMing!

Had a great time!

Silver Crusade

Indeed...thanks Talos! Excellent GM'ing! I learned a great deal about possible approaches to GM'ing...and what not to do if you want to survive. Even though Giffen the bard didn't make it out alive, he left a legacy behind...and Giffen Jr. is already ready to make his mark :)

Great job GMing, Talos. I had a great time even though I was thoroughly roasted and humbled. It was good to see a fellow player step up and tackle the task of running a game. You've given me the confidence to come out of the shadows and give it a try the next time we meet after the 4th of February.

Watching you run the show illustrated two main points to me. 1) Prep for a game is extensive and making a game start at a specified time is like trying to arrange a space shuttle launch. 2) I am told that Pathfinder is a more streamlined version of its parents AD&D 3.5 and 4.0. Still, it seemed like an absolute jungle of rules you have to be familiar with to GM. You strike me as a breathing rules reference manual as a player and still you were running into sticky situations during last night's game. This is no criticism, Talos. I'm sure that anyone who hasn't been GMing for years is going to run into difficulty referencing the proper rule for the proper situation every time. I have no doubt that the first year I GM I'll be fumbling with the rules left and right.

The one suggestion I would make to you (and I mean it in a purely constructive sense) is this: sometimes you should sacrifice rules accuracy for speed. I'm not saying you should do it all the time, but there were a few points last night where I think we would have benefited more from you making a quick ruling and cramming it down our throats despite protest than pausing the action to get a canonically accurate result. If you have good players (and I think we do), they may not love a particular ruling, but they'll respect the final word of the GM and carry on. It has been years since I GMed, so I should probably wait until I've been through this crucible myself before criticizing but I can't help myself.

The game you ran was really enjoyable and the next one you run will be even better. I'll be glad to play in it. I may vote against playing up to the next tier the next time though...

And on that topic, I've established a new thread so we can all benefit from one another's experience with Pathfinder. It's called "What I Learned from Pathfinder Today".

Scarab Sages

Words of wisdom from the originally designers of Dungeon and Dragons, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. These are words written in the 1st Edition Dungeons and Dragons. And everyone who plays D&D and its offshoots should take to heart.

“even the most important material,(the rules), herein can be altered and bent to suit the needs of individual campaigns. Where possible, true guidelines have been laid down to provide the barest of frameworks for those areas of the campaign which should be the most unusual and unique.”

“A fantasy role playing game is an exercise in imagination and personal creativity.”

“This game is unlike chess in that the rules are not cut and dried. In many places they are guidelines and suggested methods only. This is part of the attraction of ADVANCED DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, and it is integral to the game.”

In short; The rules are not the most important aspect of the game. The most important aspect of the game should be Imagination and person creativity. Many GM’s have lost this point. And I have experienced to many GM’s who get stuck on the rules. A great GM goes beyond the rules and the books. And I look forward to finding such a GM.

Here are other words from wisdom from the 1st edition

“A good Dungeon Master will most certainly make each game a surpassing
challenge for his or her players. Treasure and experience gained must be
taken at great risk or by means of utmost cleverness only.”

Always make the game a challenge.

“Superior players will not fight everything they meet, for they realize that wit is as good a weapon as the sword or the spell.”

Dain,

in answer to your question... BPBX was booked for the 4th so we're stuck with World Coffee or another yet to be determined venue... I'm personally open to suggestions, though I'll be doing Chemo on Tuesday and therefore a wimp until game night on Saturday, so we'll need another recon specialist.

Regardless of where we play, I'll stop by BPBX on Saturday before we game, and book us for the next game session, which would be the 18th I think, if that's cool with you and Paul.

On another note: As a GM/DM of many years... It is for the Gamemaster to interpret and where needed bend rules, but never break them. It is not appropriate for players to ever do so... even in homebrew, that's why it's called cheating - it give you an unbalanced advantage. You can be given help by the GM, but shouldn't solicit(it put's us in a pretty rough place).

In homebrew have flying dwarves with vorpal greatswords if that makes you happy as a GM. In organized play, even if it means we get crushed, we do so with honor knowing we played by the same rules the thousands of other players nationwide use. (steps off soapbox, takes a bow)

Not in any way pointing even a pinky finger at anybody, just letting the voices in my head make my finger type. :)

BTW Barbarian 2.0 is in the polishing phase (Muhahaha)

Peace, and Good tidings,
Luth
