I will be there! Just be forewarned that I may be a bit late (think 6:15 instead of 6:00) - have your "A" game ready, this is a fun and frantic mod. :)

"Pennywhistle" would be a good name for the hot chick at the main office who flirts with the secret agent all the time. "No time to play cunning linguistic games with you right now, miss Pennywhistle. Somebody has to put a stop to Dr. Krune's plot. The fate of all of Andoran hangs in the balance!"

Well, gosh. I feel like I haven't written you guys in AGES....

GeekOUT News!!! There will be a GeekOut this year! There's an organizational meeting that we'll be attending tonite regarding GeekOut 2013 (currently slated to be held at the Sherrill Center on the UNCA campus) on May 4th (Saturday). We're in talks to offer PFS gaming (and maybe other stuff) on May 3rd (Friday) as well. Current admission price will be $10 for the entire con. More info after the meeting this evening (and thanks to Luth in advance for his willingness to be our attendee - wait a sec! I'm sending a Sczarni representative to go negotiate a contract??? Where is my head?!?!?)

The Wyvern's Tale has a sign! The Wyvern's Tale has a sign! The Wyvern's Tale has a sign! That is all.

This Saturday there will be a little thing that we like to call the APL GRAND LODGE at the Wyvern's Tale (see, "sign", above). You can sign up for games and everything!!! Rumor has it that the folks who attended SCARAB two weekends ago may have boons and prizes to give away, so be sure to be there at the very least by 5PM for Announcement Time (Now with More Bullhorn)

Speaking of our games this Saturday, I want to give a big shout-out thank you to Thorynn for taking on the Intro Steps Marathon this Saturday. His table is completely full, but due to the popularity of this event, we'll definitely be offering this feature at future APL Game Days. Kudos for the idea, Thorynn!

Next week we'll be repeating the oh-so-exciting "So You Wanna Be a PFS GM?" class, this time with the official GM 101 curriculum. We will be playing with the Deck of Many Situations which always devolves into fits of uncontrollable laughter. You want to be there, even if you've taken the course before. SIGN UP (via Warhorn).

Note: SCARAB credits will be entered this week, as has been spake by the omnipotent DC2. Many were the APL stories sown at SCARAB. Prepare this week to be regaled.

We will have an official announcement coming your way very soon about PFS Factions and our little lodge. I appreciate the attention being heaped on faction loyalty. Maybe someone will be able to overtake the Lantern Lodge someday.....

UPDATED Faction Tally (as of 1/24/13 - pending APL Sczarni 1/29/13 GameDay)

I will be on how you say in your country.... "best behavior" *bone chilling grin*

Hey guys, I recently reread the section on using pregen credit, and I'm still confused on how I should set up my character for my first game this Friday (Hopefully).

I played a full module (Masks of the living God) with a level 4 Samurai pregen. I'm wondering if I may use the 3 experience, 4 prestige, and some or all of the 3,711 gold, earned with my pregen, at level 1 of my new character, or if I MUST wait until level 4 for my rewards (which would immediately jump to level 5, if my understanding is correct).

I ask because this effects how much money I have to buy equipment, and my entire character sheet for when I show up. I don't want to slow things down for everyone, or lose my spot on the table, because I completely misread the rules on this.

So yeah, you've got to wait to apply it.

Durnit, oh well, thank you so much for the prompt response! I can start writing my true character sheet now, thanks to your help.

I guess I'll just have to figure out a back-story on why my alchemist lost his Alchemy Kit for 1 level (He's much more an alchemist than a Ranger).

Silver Crusade 5/5

All you need to function as an alchemist is the 25gp Alchemy Crafting Kit... you can't carry the more expensive lab around with you anyway.

What game are you signed up for Friday? See you there!

Yeah, that's the one I'm talking about. Oh wait, did you only need the Alchemist kit bag to do Craft (Alchemy)? I thought it was like a Wizard's spell book for Alchemists to make bombs/extracts/mutagens/LSD.

As for Friday, we're in the same game, I'm Adam Arndt. Looking forward to adventuring with you all, I just hope the weather is a lot better this Friday than last.

You can't use craft skills to craft things in society play

With the exception of Alchemists crafting mundane alchemical items.

They more get a "discount" but you could call it crafting...

Ha, I was just about to answer that when I refreshed and looked up at RainyDayNinja's answer. Yeah, Alchemists are special little butterflies when it comes to that.

So I'll be sitting on my folding chair sipping Alchemist's Kindness while y'all peasant-classes haggle with the merchants (hehe).

I was surprised at first too, especially since it was difficult for me to separate Potion brewing (which is 100% illegal) and Craft(Alchemy).

Oh, and guys, the weather forecast for Friday looks nearly as bleak and icy as last. Is there any plan on cancelling/stopping early? If the group is still going Friday it might be hard for me to get back to Mars Hill, does anyone know of a really cheap bed and breakfast/place to crash until Saturday (I'm good at cleaning ceilings in exchange!)?

Liberty's Edge 2/5

Just refresh my recollection- where are the rules about Alchemists' discounts in PFS?

Grand Lodge 5/5 * Venture-Captain, New Zealand—Dunedin

Alright peoples, I had to hunt ALL over the place to find this ruling, but I found the document (the PFS FAQ):

How can alchemists craft in Pathfinder Society Organized Play?
Alchemists can use the Craft (alchemy) skill to produce items with their Alchemy ability. Follow the Craft rules on pages 91–93 of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook as well as in the alchemist’s Alchemy ability description. Any item created must be properly noted on that scenario’s Chronicle sheet. Under "Items Bought", note the amount of gold spent and the item created. Alchemists are assumed, for Pathfinder Society Organized Play, to carry the necessary items and tools with them to use available resources to create alchemical items. If they have a base of operations from which to do so, they may use an alchemy lab to gain the +2 bonus on their Craft (alchemy) check. Alchemists may never sell any of their created items nor may they trade them to another PC. However, they may allow other PCs to borrow or use items they’ve created (so long as the alchemist class ability being used allows them to do so).

Nothing in there about a discount for alchemists. There is a 5PP vanity that alchemists can purchase that provides a 5% discount, and gunslingers get a sizeable discount to bullets and gunpowder - but that's it. Sorry, y'all.

On a happier note, there was a cry in the wilderness this morning that there weren't enough possible spots in the Marathon Intro Steps game this coming weekend, and one of our illustrious GMs, The Right Jolly Chris Ballard, has given up his seat at the table to swing his OWN Marathon Table of Intro Steps. So, double the Intro Steps space for this weekend. Wheeeeeeee!

Have YOU voted yet for Round 2 of RPG Superstar? DO IT.

Oh, damn, I'm sorry Paul. I already had the Craft (Alchemy) read-up all typed up, but I changed it after I saw that Rainy day had already answered it.

What Jake Dodd meant with "They get a discount" is that you still have to pay for Alchemical materials (I don't have the core rule-book handy, but I believe it's something like 1/10 1/3 of purchase price), so all Craft (Alchemy) does is allow you to circumvent part of item cost by devoting time to your craft skill (Which can be around a day's work for a single flask of Alchemist's fire, from what I've read on various forums).

I don't want to sound like I actually know what I'm talking about, I've just been bouncing around a lot of pathfinder resources trying to figure out how Alchemist's work. Again, I'm kicking myself for not posting the full read-up earlier, sorry I made you look all over the place Paul.

Also, So am I correct in assuming most people are planning to go this Friday despite the weather forecast?

Yep i am pretty sure i have as good of a chance at predicting the weather about now. Also on the same note don't gunslingers get a discount on their "special" items as well or is that just in home games?

Question:

How can you tell if there are items that are only available on a chronicle, or are all items available to everyone? Example: Mask of Fear (+5 to Intimidate) from the Masks of the Living God Module.

Shadow Lodge 3/5

Also, I have been playing a bit with some... GMs that are a bit... underwhelming. Sometimes this makes me feel I've been gipped out of a good story adventure.

I would love to know what you guys feel are some of the best scenarios so I can make sure to save my plays for when I am rolling dice at the APL.

Sovereign Court

What tiers are you looking for?

Shadow Lodge 3/5

Probably a pretty wide range, but more in the 5-9 or 7-11 tiers.

Shadow Lodge 3/5

Another question:

I want to make sure I am correct - you cannot purchase potions or scrolls above caster level 3? (i.e. Breath of Life)

Hey all - I'm still a bit confused about how some things work. Assuming we make it out tomorrow, we'll have earned our third xp... which will take us to second level? I understand that we can change our character sheet before that - do we just go ahead and change it or do we need to register that somewhere?

Correct. Potions are limited to a maximum spell level of 3 and also cannot be of spells with the target of "personal" (so no [mirror image and the like unfortunately).

You can make just about any changes you want to your character before you hit 2nd level. Page 10 of Guide to Organized Play:

"1st-Level Character Retraining

Pathfinder Society is all about player choices and living with those choices once you’ve made them. However, at the start of a Pathfinder’s career, you are allowed to adjust your character before settling in for the long haul. Before you level up a character for the first time, you may change any aspect of it except its Pathfinder Society Number. Changes may only be made between adventures and before playing as a character above 1st level. Any exceptions will be noted in the Pathfinder Society FAQ. You are able to keep all treasure, Prestige Points, special boons, and XP that you have earned and apply them to the character once you retrain as long as the character meets the criteria above."

If you haven't registered your character already, you should do so under the character section of the my account page.

No need to register anywhere as long as it's before 2nd level (which is 3 XPs). Make your changes prior to that third game - voila!

Thanks!

And, since I am in the questioning mood...

If you put a spell that requires an attack roll in a spell storing weapon, would you be required to make another attack roll to successfully cast the spell from the weapon?

My thoughts are that if my sword is inside the enemy, then I have successfully touched the enemy...

Shadow Lodge 3/5

I think the real question there was, how should I spend my next 6k gold...

Sczarni

Hello fellow Pathfinder members it is me Zebaroth. They are saying on the news that it is going to snow tomorrow so I will not be there for a game. Unfortunately because I really wanted to come and play in the a game. My dad will not drive in the snow. Even if it is not snowing when I get up and I came to a game and it started to snow I would have to leave in the middle of the game because mom would have dad come over to the store immediately to pick me up. So I am not even going to sign up for a game this week. We'll see you all again in two weeks

Correct. Potions are limited to a maximum spell level of 3 and also cannot be of spells with the target of "personal" (so no [mirror image and the like unfortunately).

I think the second part of that question re: scrolls went unanswered. Scroll limitations are based on fame purchasing power.

Per the Guide to organized play p. 25 level 0-1spell scrolls are available at any time (fame or not). With all else the character is "restricted to purchasing additional items from his accumulated Chronicle sheets, or by capitalizing on his fame within his faction." I.e.fame purchasing limits.

However, there's also a cap on fame based purchases. Same page:
"Finally, scrolls of spells of 7th level or higher are not permitted unless you gain access to them on a Chronicle sheet specifically listing them."

So scroll away.

Great session last night, guys. I thoroughly enjoyed the games I was in. Good players, interesting characters and good times. I regret not having a good rogue to play in these games. It seems like Bekra would have been really well suited to many of these season four games, but alas all I have is my big dumb ulfen - Rurik. Still, it isn't every day that you get to bear hug an evil witch while on fire with vials of alchemist's fire detonating on your belt. Thanks to our Quadiran healer for keeping me alive and earlier thanks to our resident dwarfling for the flanking bonuses, by the way. Who needs season specials to make things interesting when our regular games are this good? I've learned that civilization-hating Shoanti can save a party from failboating a scenario with some old-fashioned practical wisdom and that a halfling "information broker" who isn't afraid of a little exceedingly creepy flirtation Chelaxian style can be worth twice his weight in gold. Good times all around from where I was sitting.

Our first trials yesterday may have been "more suited" to the roguish type, but I do remember it was the critical clue that Rurick found in the picture, while the rest of the party was amiss, that proved crucial. And it was Rurick's sole ability to stand toe to toe with bearded devil's that carried the party to victory in those debacherous bed chambers.

Rurick's Ulfin heritage proved a mighty tool in Skelg's rescue. With his initial recognition of false Taldon guards and his ability to sail us on a stolen ship with rescued treasure past unassuming town guard, Rurick was crucial to the success of our mission. And most especially in is kamikaze like lone assault on the most putrid of witches. Without his direction the group would have most likely floundered in indecision. It is that decisive action that both Vabios Pennywhistle and Krulack the Beastman value utmost in a fellow Pathfinder. HUZZAH, HUZZAH,!

But you have to be a rogue to select it.

Long story short, there is no clear answer. It may or may not be PFS legal. RAI, I think it should work without a problem, but RAW, there's no way to do it.
