Penny Arcade just posted a strip featuring Pathfinder and a commentary that criticizes 4th edition (which they've been pretty up on overall in the past).
Expect some additional traffic as PA-ers start investigating this "new game".
NOTE: This isn't an edition war post and I'd appreciate if people wouldn't turn it into an edition war thread.

Fourth Edition suffers under an especially heavy yoke when it comes to power creep in our experience, and after so many expansions there’s a lot of homogeneous abilities and uniformity as an ironic result of having so many options. I still think it can be fixed, but I am sometimes accused of optimism.

Thanks, my read-fu is weak I guess.

They will learn to fear, to horde their precious abilities. Yes. Yesssss.
Really?
I thought 3E/3.5/PF had made great efforts to include more at-will abilities, and increase the options for casters, so they don't have to blow their good spells on trivial encounters.I'm having a laugh with a witch right now, and between evil eye, healing and ward hexes, I can still be useful in the smaller encounters, and don't need to cast spells at all.

I agree. Even at 'just' first level, Rey has infinate 1d3+1 (acid flask focus) acid spashes and six force bolts (sage bloodline). That's before his first level spells. (snap dragon fireworks and sleep. He's built around not needing to roll to hit.) More than enough to get through Silent Tide.

I had a feeling something like this might be brewing after yesterday's oft-retweeted tweet from cwgabriel:
okay after getting the Starter box a few weeks ago it is official...I am obsessed with Pathfinder. @paizo
Looks like they didn't link directly to paizo.com (yet) so maybe we have time to tweak some bandwidth-type things before the onslaught...

It makes me wonder if Gabe had any experience with 3.x before he tried Pathfinder.
He got into TTRPGs through fourth edition...

As Wizards of the Coast quite painfully discovered with 4E, pen and paper RPG awareness among video gamers isn't quite what some think it is.

You call that criticism?
It's less criticism and more commentary. PA has been pretty faithful to 4e over the years. It's what they've played in their normal and 'superstar' group. It's what worked for them and theirs for awhile. They've never really been anti- any other system.
But it seems that they're making a shift in their game and trying something new to them that may work better for how they want to play. And it's apparently to PFRPG.

I really don't think the amount of PA people who visit here is going to amount to much, relative the this sites normal traffic anwyay. It would be cool to see the traffic logs for this timeframe.

I think it's great that, no matter what the system, PA constantly refers back to tabletop gaming as the roots of the modern video gaming industry. It was great to see Paizo and other tabletop gaming companies there at PAX alongside the huge amounts of money being thrown around in the exhibit hall by the big video game publishers.
This comic was also very appropriate for my online gaming group, since we just wrapped up a game of 4e and are starting up Pathfinder. It was a hard sell initially, but my constant flogging of their products and the fantastic line support that Paizo provides finally sealed the deal.

As a long time reader of PA, Tycho has explained many times that all their advertisers are only for products they themselves enjoy. But also, it's a double-edged sword. Just because they have advertisers, those companies know full well that their games are also open to any critique or criticism within the blog/comic dishes out.
While Gabe has been showing off his amazingly fun game over the years, and the star-studded podcasts are a joy to watch and listen to, it still doesn't change the fact that they are gamers... and many don't like to sit still in the industry, as The Conflux storyline alludes to in some ways. You gotta move on and stretch your wings, keeping it interesting and challenging. Yay, Pathfinder!

I want to see a Pillars of Salt spell now.
Via Jason's Google Plus:
Pillars of Salt
School: transmutation; Level: cleric/druid 9
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Components: V, S, M (handful of salt)
Range: close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Area: 10-ft-radius spread
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Fortitude half; Spell Resistance: yes
This spell calls down the fury of the heavens, transforming all heathens within its area into pillars of salt. All creatures in the area that do not share one alignment component with you take 10 points of damage per caster level. Those that are slain by this spell are transformed into pillars of salt and cannot be raised or resurrected, without first casting wish or miracle. Creatures that save against this effect, but are still slain are not transformed in this way.

Was just coming over to post this. Someone posted it on the PA forum too.

It's kind of old-ish, in Internet ages. But it's usually used specifically to refer to a site's overload at the hands of a Penny Arcade post. So it's new to some, not to others.

Hmm, the problems Mike "Gabe" refers to aren't exclusive 4e issues. High level play and GM Burn out has been a problem with the game for a long time. That's why the AP model is so great. A satisfying end to a campaign means you can get enthusiastic about a new story all over again.
