Join us for three days of PFS fun and games at the Hawthorn Suites in Champaign, IL on 27-29 January 2012.
Winter War is the Midwest's longest, consecutively running, independent gaming convention. For nearly four decades, Winter War has been providing a place for tabletop gaming enthusiasts to come together to express their passion in a no-frills and no distractions atmosphere. Independently managed for over thirty five years, they have endeavored to preserve and promote the very essence of the gaming community, the games. Located in Champaign-Urbana, IL, Winter War provides a relaxed gaming atmosphere with an almost limitless variety of gaming to be had and friends to be made. They are also dedicated to the promotion of gaming in our younger generation, offering a wide variety of kid-friendly gaming and family oriented events.
No matter what your interests in table-top gaming, experience level, or age, Winter War has an event to suit your tastes. From role playing to World War II combat simulations to collectible card games, they have it all. Winter War is even home to one of the area's premier Advanced Squad Leader tournaments.
The convention also offers free parking, nearby access to varied restaurants and entertainment, plus a convention discount on your hotel accommodations.
Volunteer to GM at least two sessions and receive your convention badge for free (you still need to register for individual games).
There really is no reason not come out and game with us!
The Pathfinder Society events are processing and should be open for registration soon. In the meantime, you can view our offerings on Warhorn. We are using this site largely for GM mustering, but once you register on the main site and acquire your event tickets, it would be appreciated if you would enter that information on the Warhorn site as well.
Currently, we are scheduled to feature the special event "Blood Under Absalom" as well as more than 30 other scenarios including the "First Steps" series. If you have some novice gamers who would like to join the Pathfinder Society, this is a great opportunity.
If you have additional questions, please contact me at pfs.illinois@gmail.com. Otherwise, see ya there!
Pathfinder Society Organized Play at Winter War is sponsored by CIRCA (Central Illinois Roleplaying Combatants Alliance).
CIRCA is comprised of role-playing gamers in central Illinois and coordinates game days and home games in and around Urbana-Champaign, Bloomington-Normal, and Springfield. CIRCA also provides judge support to selected gaming conventions in downstate Illinois.

Sorry, that should read "...and more than 30 additional tables including..."
And we have already expanded to 51 tables of Pathfinder goodness!!
This is shaping up to be a great convention. You know you want to be there ;-)

For much of the very late 70's and early 80's my wife, a group of my friends and I made the yearly trip to the U of I campus for Winter War. At the time it was always held in the Foreign Languages Building. Individual games in each classroom. I suspect that having it at the hotel these days makes things like eating and sleeping much more convenient for everyone. No more slogging through hip-deep snow drifts to get a slice of pizza downtown! (I wonder if Papa Del's pizza is even still around and is it as good these days as I remember it being?)
We had a streak of 3 or 4 years where we won the (insert name of the oldest tabletop RPG here) competition. The yearly game auction was always a lot of fun (and if you paid attention, you could track certain copies of a few wargames that inevitably changed hands there year after year). I also recall a very nice gentleman who brought a painted scale army of an actual German Panzer division - each and every vehicle - each year.
One year there were pamphlets, right at the registration desk, that warned everyone of the demonic and satanic influence of D&D. I suspect that they were snuck in without the con knowing about them. One of the instructors in the psych college at the time was involved in the anti - D&D movement (Dr. Thomas Radecki, if you want to google it).
Now the wife and I are older, and don't play as much as we used to. Might be fun to pop down to Champaign, Il. this winter and see how much things have changed!
Thanks for stirring up many fond memories, Bob!

If you are interested in GM'ing consider submitting your requests soon. I already have a number of inquiries and it is first come, first serve.
Remember that if you GM 2+ slots, your badge is free.
If we run out of slots, and there are more volunteers, I may ask those scheduled with 4+ slots if they would give up a slot so someone else can take advantage of the free badge. Of course, that is up to the individual and no guarantees exist should you wait too long.
In the end, we just want to attract the largest group of PFS the region has ever had. The larger the attendance, the better the rewards!!

Thanks Bob for moving down my way and organizing this years event. We started with one table a slot 2-3 years ago, and grew to 3 plus last year. This year will be even more.

Bring it, you pretender-to-the-throne! I have so little respect for you, I'm going to thrash you with a rolled-up copy of The Asmodeus Mirage when I see you!! You're going feel the sting of 7 banal encounters all the way back home to whatever rock you learned to GM under.

The event schedule has been posted to the Winter War ebsite so you can now register to attend and purchase your event tickets.
Also, the Warhorn site is open for all signups. Remember, you must purchase event tickets prior to signing up to play on Warhorn. It is largely being used to muster the GM's, but it would be appreciated if players would signup for the slots they have registered to help us track table assignments. Thanks

More than half of the GM slots have been filled. If you are intending to attend the convention (and I know you will) as a GM, make your selections sooner than later to reserve the ones you want to run.
Then head over to the main website and register for the scenarios you want to play. Pre-registration should be open later this week or next week.
What else are ya gonna do at the end of January...watch the snow fall?
If you are concerned with it interfering with the NFL playoffs, don't be. The convention is the open weekend between the Conference Championship games and the Super Bowl. Awesome timing huh!
See y'all there.

I've registered - where do I go for showing things on Warhorn?
Bob, you can consider me an emergency fill-in GM on these scenarios:
Sewer Dragons of Absalom
Echoes of the Overwatched
I signed up for:
Wonders of the Weave I (The Dog Pharoah's Tomb) - Corben, 6th level fighter.
Wonders of the Weave II (Snakes in the Grass) - Corben, 6th level fighter
Immortal Conundrum - Corben, 6th level fighter
Song of the Sea Witch - Neve, 3rd level Cleric.
...and I just lost the browser window with my pre-reg in it. Hopefully, Don will send an email on that.
I think I signed up for Blood under Absalom, I don't remember if I signed up for the Mauler, but I've played neither.

Because all the events had to be entered before we knew who the GM's would be, they are all listed under my name. Once the GM list is finalized, I will forwward it to the convention staff who will arrange for the free badges for anyone who volunteers for 2+ slots.
Unfortunately, that means if you also want to play, you will need to purchase a badge from the Winter War website so you will have access to acquire event tickets. When you arrive to the convention, you will have the ability to request a refund on the purchased badge and keep the free one. I do not know if the refund will be immediately available or if it will take some amount of time to process. Sorry if this is an inconvenience, but other ways open us up to too many chances for error.
If you intend only to GM, you do not need to register with Winter War. That will happen automatically when I submit the GM list. Just go to the Warhorn site and select which slots/scenarios you want to run from the available list. Please do not register as a "standby" GM in any slot until all tables in a given slot are filled. You would likely be asked to run one of the other tables anyway.
If you intend to play, please register with Winter War and purchase event tickets for the games you want to play. Afterwards, please mirror your registrations to Warhorn to assist in mustering and so we can get a better idea if any tables should be cancelled or additional offerings of a specific scenario should be added.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email me
pfs.illinois@gmail.com
Thanks,

Also, slot D has part 2 of Wonders in the Weave listed and I think it is part 1 on warhorn.
There are a few minor errors in the listings on Warhorn, but the convention staff are aware of it and working on a fix.
the Wonders in the Weave in that slot is listed as "II" instead of "I", but you'll note that the scenario number and title are correct. It should be getting corrected.

Susan said that refunds will be by papal or when you sign in. She just has to wait till Bob gives her the GM list.

One correction due to a minor misunderstanding. If you are exclusively a GM, you still need to register on the Winter War website. Registration does not require you to buy a badge (unless you intend to buy individual event tickets), but the convention staff will need you to have an account in order to assign the GM/free badge to.
TwilightKnight |
Plenty of space left for GM's and players. Visit WINTER WAR and WARHORN for more details.
TwilightKnight |
It's not obvious, but you should be able to register online.
Go to the Winter War website and in the upper right corner of the main page, click on New Account and enter all your information.
Next, look along the left side in the menu for Online Forms:. Under that heading, you should see Event Registration. Click on that.
That should take you to the prereg page and show your personal/account info at the top, allow you to select what days you will attend, and purchase event tickets for whatever you want to play.
If you intend to GM any PFS events, be sure to log into our Warhorn site and signup.
Thanks! and see ya there
