Ranger's animal companion

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

How does the Ranger get the animal companion?

Does the Ranger the second he hits lvl 4 and selects his animal companion gain it? Out of the freaking blue just suddenly a wolf appear?

What if you are in the middle of a town, or what if you are sitting at the table of the king in the middle of the royal dinner and than out of the thin air a wolf suddenly appear?

It sounds seriusly stupid that a creature shall just appear..

Just RP it out. Yes a Ranger gets a animal companion at lv 4, but it does not have to appear with a "poof" right at your/his/her lap.

Maybe he walked out of town into the woods and seek one out? Maybe he entered the sewers for one. Or maybe he tames a dog from the streets as his animal companion.

The options are endless. Just Role Play it.

Add that the Ranger is completly anti-Rp...

Then why the hell is he playing a Role Playing Game?

Maybe he just wants to kill stuff. That is how a lot of us start out. Some of us change, but some don't however.

True, so true. He plays for 2x reasons, large numbers (all he ever plays is crit-based chr) or rules. He is a major rulefascist. If it is not writte, if it is not worded correctly it is not real.

Generally, it is a good idea to have level-up happen during a convenient downtime, like while resting safely.

Just a couple of things.

1- sounds like he's a terrible person to play with.
2- sounds like he doesn't give a damn about wheter the animal companion magically appears beside him. If he only cares about the rules and the numbers, you could go at great lenghts to ensure that his animal companion has his own backstory and create an elaborate set up to make him meet his new master, but this player is probably just going to not give a f!~@. So save yourself some time and say: you have a companion now, K thanks, let's move on.

1) Trust me.. yes some times its a terrible thing to vitnes.

2) Yeah, that is what i ended up doing. I stated that i wanted a good story of how he got it, but ingame it would be "foof it has arrived".

If your PC isn't going to write the backstory/is a min-maxer, just let him poof in a pet. Fairly useless in combat, and unless he's super into it, not a great RP tool either.

Tell him if he wants to have fun combat he is going to have to roleplay do it's fun for the group. It appears at level 4, but eidolins randomly evolve and animals suddenly grow a size category. Just explain or ignore, and keep playing.
