Yeah, that was definitely the best of the finales so far. Totally epic.
My only complaint was:
That's a minor quibble though. I really liked the way it wrapped up.

Yo, brony here, I didn't know we had a thread!
Anyway, with regards to this:

Spoiler:Might me be reading too much into that, but......as when Twilight powered up that 'pensieve' elixer, she used shadowy magic.
The first time this "shadowy magic" appeared, Celestia was using it to demonstrate what Sombra would do if he managed to take over the Crystal Empire again. Twilight used it later that episode to bypass Sombra's illusions, though she did get caught in a trap soon afterwards. Finally, in the Season 4 Premier,

In the case of the latter 2 explanations the pony in question isn't an Alicorn but they have basically stolen/borrowed the power or there may be certain Alicorn Spells that sufficiently powerful Unicorns can use. Both Twilight and Sombra used that spell when neither was an Alicorn but it is shown that Sombra was a force that even Celestia and Luna thought to be dangerous enough that they fought him head on. So the spell itself may be.

Yeah. The place they're being sent definitely looks like they need the magic of Friendship. Those false smiles, nervous looks, and identical hairstyles and cutie marks... I think they're desperately unhappy. (That's why Pinkie doesn't like it, she can sense they're not really happy despite their smiles.)
I think this season will give us a lot of world-building and travel.

Note that Twilight is capable of using it before her ascension. Perhaps this sort of magic is available to any pony/unicorn who is "on the path" to alicorn-dom. This would imply that Sombra was, in essence, "just that powerful".
The upcoming comic about his origins may or may not reveal more.

I dunno, the comics seem to have done a pretty good job of declaring themselves non-canon, based on what I've heard about them so far.

"Life is a Runway"
"Friendship Through the Ages"
"My Past is Not Today"
Three bonus shorts with songs for Rainbow Rocks. Posting date's unfortunate, but these are real and awesome. Especially "My Past is Not Today." (Awesome Sunset Shimmer song.)

Sorry to double-post, but for some reason Hasbro deleted the original videos and re-uploaded, and I don't like leaving broken links. (If I could edit my post, I'd just do that... but it's been too long.)

So...Just got a chance to watch the new episodes. Orwell would be proud I think.
To avoid spoiling anything:
"You can't have a nightmare, if you never dream." has to be one of the creepiest lines in media in my recent memory.
This is probably the single most setup heavy season opener to date. It seems to lay the ground work for quite a bit of story, we got the map revealing large portions of the world never before seen, cutie marks as pagers/quest markers,(I'm really expecting at least a couple episodes where each of the mane 6 or pairs of them will be sent hither and yon on quests as dictated by the map sending their marks around), an obvious setup for a recurring villain, yet another historical character with powerful magic and artifacts. I also think that the four new "second stringers" may be the first in a a new line of allies for the mane 6, kind of like the 6 gift givers last season.
If the four newbies from this episode don't come back for a least a cameo this season I'll be disappointed.
In short I believe overall a good start for this season I think.

Part of me enjoys the fact that Starlight is just a unicorn. It makes her scary and dangerous in a way Tirek and Nightmare Moon could never be. Before it aired, I figured she would have been dealt with by the end of the premier. I was genuinely surprised she escaped.
I'm betting that part of the season's quest will be retrieving those artifacts of Meadowbrook's. Possibly clashing with Starlight over them. I'm also betting the castle will send them there, and they'll have to help the locals to succeed. The behind the scenes previews strongly suggested this is going to be a season heavy on world-building.

1:50 into "Life is a Runway"
Was anyone else thinking The Matrix, or was that just me?
"Rarity here. What do you need, Sunset?"
"Dresses. Lots of dresses."
I gotta say, I think Runway may actually be the best song of those three. It feels the most distinctive in style. The video for Past Is Not Today kicks ass, though.
Speaking of things kickass, that premier. Wow. I can't wait to see Starlight return. I can't wait to learn more about the new Twilight lookalight! Er, lookalike.
Kinda like having a fighter as the big bad they're just horribly underpowered at the character level these ponies have.
A pegasus controls weather. Don't screw with the pegasus.
Plus, we know a bit too little about the setting to assume things. Maybe there are superpowerful earth ponies who can control plants or "earthbend". Maybe magic immunity is a thing. Maybe the earth pony has a magic item that protects them. :P

Earth Ponies also might have incidental powers. She only exists as a comic book character, but Mane-iac was an earth pony, want she?

So is Pinkie Pie. Sometimes I'm half-convinced she is some kind of earth pony caster that's gone unrecognized because unicorns are still stuck on the notion that only they can cast spells.
The most common explanation I hear emphasizes their connection to the earth. Their facility to grow things and otherwise manipulate the things of nature. For example, Zecora and Apple Bloom being good with potions and Granny Smith figuring out how to harness zap apples.
One theory called it an unknown (in Equestria, anyway) psychic connection. It's apparently innate and not something pegasi or unicorns pick up on. Take this psychic openness and expand it and you get Pinkie Pie's Pinkie Sense.
Maybe. I do wish they'd give us a little more on this.
