Witch Hex Ward & CMD

Rules Questions

The Exchange

Hey All--

Sorry if my search fu is weak, but missed this if it exists.

Does the witches Hex Ward (+2 to AC/Saves) apply also to CMD?

I think I may be confusing this with this with the Cha bonus that Paladin's get to both AC and CMD, and wanted to confirm. Not sure why it would count in one instance but not both.

Thoughts?

Prepare yourself for one of the best-kept secrets of AC and CMD:

PRD: CMD wrote:
A creature can also add any circumstance, deflection, dodge, insight, luck, morale, profane, and sacred bonuses to AC to its CMD.

Nearly any AC bonus (most notably excluding armor and natural armor, but also untyped) also applies to your CMD.

Keep this in mind for things like the Dodge feat and Rings of Protection.

Yeah but don't forget the Witch can't use this hex on them self and it drops off as soon as the warded target gets hit or fails a save.

Not my favorite Hex.

Nope, it only boosts AC and saves and the witch CANNOT use it on themselves. Not my favorite Hex.

It does apply to CMD. I think you might be missunderstanding what the OP was asking. He wasn't questioning if the Hex could protect the witch just if the AC bonus it granted the subject of the Hex also applied to the Subjects CMD.

I love this hex. Granted I'm not the one playing the Witch...

This is true, however, its also the one hex a witch can set up in between combats and not worry about duration. Sure, it has to target a different person every time, but still, 3 (on average) buffs out of combat aren't bad, even if they're not earth shattering.

A witch can use the Ward Hex on the same creature over and over if she likes. She just can't have 2 up at one time. It's not like Healing where you can't benefit from the hex more than once in 24 hours.

Don't forget you can only have 1 Ward active at a time.

It's nice to throw on a familiar (especially if you are Beast Bonded) but there are much better hexes out there to take that.

On a related note, would Bless increase CMD?

I dont think bless provides any form of AC bonus, so no it would not increase CMD.

My confusion is based on CMD being based on BAB but modified by AC bonuses and not BAB bonuses.

Don't think of them as BAB bonuses. Think of them as attack bonuses. Attack bonuses don't apply to defense. (A character with BAB of +5 casts Bless, that doesn't give him a BAB of +6 and an extra attack, it just modifies his attack bonus (which itself is modified by his BAB))

Oh, so THAT'S where people are getting confused! I was wondering about that!

Yes, there's no such thing as a bonus to BAB.

Right I always think of them as attack bonuses and we've never had a problem with the whole "Bless gives you an extra attack" thing. This is mostly just a "Since AC bonuses increase CMD do attack bonuses increase CMD" and of course now that I've read through it they don't because CMD is not based on attack bonus but BAB. Clunky but it's an improvement over the old way at least.

It'd probably help if BAB didn't stand for "base attack bonus". The description in the CRB even calls it your general "skill in combat". And it's even used not only as a bonus to your attacks (as the name implies), but also as your defense against a feint (unless you're well-trained in Sense Motive).

It ought to be called "Combat Aptitude" or something. Oh well.

In this case I think the boxed set is going to give us a good idea of future rules tweaks. There's a lot of fat they had to trim, and how they choose to trim it is going to be very revealing. Much like the new Stealth rules.
